I guess it's just a matter of time...

that Netflix signs these deals with every studio.
But I'm with others here--28 days is no big deal, I have plenty of stuff to watch.

28 Days

All I have to say is streaming sucks!! All the people here talk about how the internet is so much the future. But our country has trouble getting above dial-up speed to the masses. Give me a hi-def disc with hi-def sound over crappy buffered stereo streaming any day. Even downloaded stuff doesn't come in hi def sound. That's the part i like best about watching movies at home.

That blows....

I know, Netflix is really trying to appeal to those with broadband, but at the expense of their core customers like me who rent movies via disk. Now I have to wait another MONTH for ALL new releases. I guess RedBox is looking better and better.....

Redbox is signing these deals too. The only way you're going to be able to rent a new movie when the DVD comes out is via PPV.

Giving users additional incentive to buy DVDs pirate

quote above

yeah, like no internet neflix user ever had books or DVD/blue-ray on his shelf.

What happens to the culture that valued once cinema and theater over enterntainment at home. Is this happening with us what Wilson Lucas warns us in the movie IDIOCRACY?

Pirates simply keep stealing their movies over bittorent and usenet, so as not to wait for 28 days...

It's only a movie.
They should have put all of that determination into buying Netflix stock when it was under $10/share.
Sometimes waiting can be a good thing.

Who is really worried about this?

Who exactly is worried about this and the moves by the other studios?

If you already didn't see it in the theater, then you weren't really looking that forward to it. So what is another 28 days past the release date for you, really?

If you're not buying the DVD, why would you care what the release date of the DVD is?

If you schedule your Netflix well enough in advance, you shouldn't notice release dates anyway, the movies will just eventually come as you watch and return.

I don't know of anyone that says, "Oh boy, the DVD release date for "Movie X" is coming up! I can't wait to have Netflix send it to me the first day it is out!" I don't see that scenario playing out.

Who is getting excited for the DVD release date of a movie they didn't bother to see in the first place?

And if it is something you are that excited about, shouldn't you be buying it?

It must really come down to the fact that, advertising works. You people that just can't believe movie studios have delayed Netflix from having the movie available are easily led by advertising for new release DVDs. And you think you have to see it on release day. Even though the movie will likely be on DVD forever.

And pirates, don't fool yourselves, you weren't going to buy it or even rent it in the first place. Even if it was available the day the movie was released to theaters. Even if it was available the week before that.

My 2 cents...

I still think Giganews for $30/month, is the best bang for the buck!

Delays favour pirated copies

The day the DVD becomes available, it also becomes available on piratebay, without annoying DRM.

Each day you delay commercial availability on the net is a day where people, instead of buying their copy on the net, will download it for free.

The MAFIAA complains about priating, yet every business practice they adopt fosters it intead of reducing it.

Before they can complain about pirating, they should ensure that their products are available commercially at affordable price, without stupid DRM and available at same time as legacy distribution methods.

Once Grande

Not so long ago, Netflix was fresh and new, and quickly grew to become quite grande, but now are putting on their hats only after the beckoning of the kings, so Netflix now appears "content" just riding along the current streaming wave for just a few classic, mountains of one-two star, the really pathetic and about all are ........ just "old".
