Comments on news posted 2010-10-26 15:25:29: Verizon's been busily conducting GPON connectivity trials in the field, showcasing how future upgrades could theoretically allow them to offer 10 Gbps to each home, or symmetrical 1 Gbps service to each PC in said home. ..

Cool.

Cool. Meanwhile, I'm struggling to maintain an HD stream from Netflix and the 10Mbps and I am paying for during the evening with Centurylink.

Yep.

Speaking about Netflix, anyone with an Xbox and Netflix seeing connection issues? I mean, I have a 15/15 and I shouldn't be seeing less than 3 bars (unless it's Netflix or Xbox issue).

Ha. 2.4Gbps... I GOT MORE GEEBEES with FIOS!!! (need new router, and likely fiber direct to PC/MAC interfaces...)

And lo, the King and his court get SUPERFIOS, whilest the peasants get DSL! (if they are lucky)...

Support "Fiber 2 the Farm" Project!!! Rural fiber...it's more than grain, it's FIBER!

meanwhile back in reality........

most users ARE NOT in FiOS territory, or Verizon has tried to balk on franchising agreements, tossed all their DSL lines, and the end users suffer the most. what about all the verizon and former verizon customers who could barely get 2mbps, let alone 1 Gbps. this is just and simply Public relations to say that they can, and downplay the fact that less than 10% of their actual customer base will see any speeds more than a few mbps for the next 50 years unless they switch to cable or the govt that is bought and sold steps in.

I don't use Netflix on the 360 but on the PS3 & computer I can't seem to get an HD stream with an 8Mbps connection

I use the 360, and yes, I'm struggling to maintain 4 bars and an HD stream. But I think it's related to the fact that I'm only seeing 2-4Mbps during the evening on my supposed 10Mbps connection.

As a 25/25 FiOS customer, I love it and see

no reason to really upgrade as the streaming is perfect for all my video needs

Netflix sent out an email saying they were having some issues, and were issuing a credit of some sort...

There goes half a cap...

Hehe...

I just had to laugh when I thought this would be half of a month's cap on wireless.

Or a whole month plus overages on AT&T

Must be nice.

Must be nice Verizon to be able to dump half your customer base off and not worry about having to upgrade them anymore plus off loading your debt.

My whole damn state was sold off, so I sure as hell won't be seeing Verizon FiOS in my lifetime, unless I happen to move somewhere where they actually serve it.

Its either Comcast or AT&T for me..and Comcast is a joke for those kinda speeds..not to mention their 250GB cap. And AT&T..their still rocking 6/768 as their top speed tier. WHAT A JOKE.

did verizon sell to AT&T? or is there overlap between verizon and AT&T where you live?

Parlor Trick

Numbers like 10 Gbps are mere parlor tricks.

Time will tell whether Verizon and 10 Gbps GPON are up to the task. For now, Verizon's leap to 10 Gbps is about market positioning and bragging rights rather than delivering a useful service to a mass customer market.

Re: Must be nice.

If att offered u-verse top 18 (or 24 If) in you area but had to pay $150 installation to have standalone Internet would u take that?

As for 250 gb, I have donwloadd lot of stuff including tormenting but I never went above 250. It was usually half or less. But I use Internet alone. I don't share it with anybody.

If your local phone company is AT&T, then you never had Verizon service in the first place. All of the territory was sold to Frontier.

Re: meanwhile back in reality........

A good chunk of Verizon customers are in FiOS territory, I'd say about 70-80%. The other 20% are either dirt-poor, in cities that refused to sign contracts with Verizon, or are too low in population to be profitable.

While I don't use Netflix, I believe they are having issues with their CDN considering that outage last week.

Re: Parlor Trick

Unlike that theoretical 800Mbps lab test, this was done over actual deployed fiber to the home. 10 Gbps is a bit exaggerating in terms of what people will actually see in their service, but 1-2 Gbps is well within the range of what FiOS is capable of. I doubt you understand the capability of FTTH.

Gotcha. You really have to dig deep into context to get it.

Re: Parlor Trick

I'm actually just making fun of things Verizon has said in the past.

I just changed the speeds and the company name. I just couldn't help but think of their thoughts on "fast speeds" when they weren't providing the top speeds vs this experiment.

It's a combination of impractical (at the moment, though I could definitely see speeds approaching 1 Gbps over the next few years) and cool in a nerdy way. I'm all for innovation for faster connections. I know how FTTH technology works.

I'd be happy with..

a symmetrical 10/10. Best upload I can get in my area right now is 2mb. I can get 50mb down though. I have no need for that fast of a download (right now). But I often upload large files, both for work and other less legitimate reasons, and 2mb is freakin slow.

fios

Seems Fios is avail in fortwayne, but not the rest of the state. when asking verizon directly they inform me that att has a monopoly and to talk to my state rep to get that changed.

Re: Cool.

Yawn. Its fiber it can go faster than this.
If DSL can go 10 Gbps then that would be news.
