rioting breaks out in canada

news at 10

Maybe its time Canada has a revolution

Really, in this day and age what is the difference between these low caps and overages and what Egypt is doing. This is just the pig of censorship with some lipstick slapped on. I think its time that Canadians march into there parliament and trough out there representatives. In a representative democracy the representatives are responsible for carrying out the will of its constituency. The Canadian government is doing the complete opposite. When your government starts to only be concerned about the share holders of is largest company's over the will and protection of the people. Its time to over-though said government. Government should fear its people and I think it is time for Canadians to put a little fear into its government.

It's for your own "protection." You wouldn't want anything to happen to your precious Internet, do you?

I thought I wanted to live in Canada

.. until now.

Then again, there's a reason why their dollar is still worthless compared to the US dollar.

So stupid..

Our dollar is worth more than the USD right now. Thanks for the insight though.

If you have a "login only" account it's most confusing

Nothing has even been stated for the existing "login only" accounts. I suppose you just "fly by the seat of your pants" and find out when you get your amended bill. You could get a bill for millions or even billions of dollars and not even know it!!

Insurance --It's not that

Insurance is a bad name for it . The way it was explained to me it's more like extra bandwidth packages

You can buy 3 set of package at 40g each from your ISP for a max of 120g or you can buy only one , depending on your consumption

In Quebec the basic bandwidth limit is 60g in Ontario it's 25g

So Basic + insurance = you monthly cost

The limits were set by Bell

Re: If you have a "login only" account it's most confu

This is a move by Bell and Rogers to limit Netflix and other internet media streaming. More and more people are cancelling their land lines and cable television in favour of Netflix and Skype, and they know this.

It's obvious it's a money grab, and Canadians know it. Why can't we do anything about it? Telecommunications companies are the most powerful people in Canada.

Bell and the CRTC tried to bar Wind Mobile from entering Canada, which would bring low rates and competition for Bell and Rogers, something unheard of. After they blocked them, everyone was outraged and the government overturned the CRTC's decision. Since then, mobile services have dropped drastically because of this new competition.

This is not the first time the CRTC has gone against the wishes of the consumer and jumped into the arms of the corporations.

The CRTC recently changed a law that allows news networks to broadcast false and misleading information as long as it doesn't harm anyone... Mind you, it used to prohibit you from broadcasting false and misleading information at all... But, Bell is acquiring CTV and the CRTC is paving the way for a "Fox" like network for them.

Bell operates mobile networks, cable television, phone services, and internet along with owning our television programming and networks. They make it extremely difficult for competition and they get away with it because of their money and influence in the government.

Does it suck? Obviously. It's a for-profit move, and everyone knows it.

The government is already in talks of reviewing and possible reversing this law. The NDP and the Liberals have already voiced their hatred for this bill, along with 200,000 people that have signed the petition.

The only reason this is still in effect is because of the capitalistic companies like Bell and Rogers that have the power to mold the laws.

It's what happens when 3 companies control the countries' telecommunications.

Our country only has a population of around 33 million people, a majority being older people who are uninformed on the issue or simply don't understand. Bell is claiming network congestion, while providing absolutely no proof, and stating the UBB is the only solution.

Network congestion is relative to the quantity and volume of the customers, if their networks can't handle it then it's the fault of the company not catering to the needs of it's customer. UBB will be put in place to force you to back away from internet streaming, in fear of charges, and back into the arms of the providers. It has nothing to do with network congestion, as Bell and Shaw have stated that only 5% of their user base exceeds the current monthly cap.

Netflix has already come out and said that this is a for-profit move by the corporations and the costs simply don't make sense.

It costs $0.01 to move 1GB of data through Bell's end-mile lines, and they're charge $3 to $4.

The Mafia Would Be Proud

The main thing the mafia sold was "insurance" and "protection"... yeah, from themselves. How does this different from what the Canadian cable companies are doing? In a just world these providers would be jailed on racketeering charges.

Help!

Even if you live in America, help us sign the petition. The government has already come out and said that they're reviewing the changes, but we need to pressure them!

It's not just Canadian internet in danger here, American companies will see the billions to be made and try to implement the same thing. It's Bell's step towards subscription based internet where you pay for certain websites (see Net neutrality).

Let's stop it while we still can: www.stopthemeter.ca

Over the past few years the Canadian Dollar has held a value ABOVE the Greenback.
I am sorry you didn't know.

I will concede that we are getting hosed, screwed and raked over the coals when it comes to broadband fees. The CRTC has bent over backwards and around again to kiss the backsides of the incumbents; in doing so the end consumer ends up paying for decades old technology at futuristic prices. Therefore, in a cross boarder ISP comparison, you guys have last laugh.

One good thing about this

Once the US sees how much of a total clusterfuck this turns out to be you'll never get it here.
