Open sourceWell, with open source software this isn't really a problem. That's mostly what I use anyway.
It doesn't really matter anyway. Our FBI and Justice Dept. are totally incompetent.
Would like to add sourceforge.net as a good sourde for non government infected software

Re: Open sourceHmm, well, yes and no. IIRC, the only open source software that has its source audited is BSD, and auditing software code isn't trivial. Open source just indicates that someone can inspect and audit the code, not that it is guaranteed backdoor free. Though I agree it is generally a better option than the closed alternatives.
Of course even if your software is 100% backdoor free, it means little when your ISP and hardware manufacturers could be collaborating with the FBI.
Incompetent FBI + lots of expensive toys and privileges = bad for all americans. Remember Ruby Ridge and Waco...
|

Re: Open sourcesaid by Kosh: auditing software code isn't trivial. I would disagree with this. Perhaps maybe if the program was obfuscated, but I've never seen that in open source. I'm referring to smaller programs like bit torrent clients and such. For operating systems, its a little bit different.

go ahead"...a way for police BIG BROTHER armed with wiretap orders word of mouth, paranoia, and little regard for the Constitution to conduct surveillance spy on anyone, anytime, anywhere, for anything..." ...had to This will only push more people into using even more encryption. Backdoor everything and some folks will still find ways to cover their tracks (or not leave any to begin with).

What about using other languages?I suppose that next they will want to make illegal using a language not understood by the government. I am thinking of how the Army used Navajo "code talkers" to confound the Japanese during World War II.

I thought of a great way to save money and avoid problemsStop wiretapping people if there's not enough evidence to indict them. If there is enough evidence, bring them to court, and have them install the wiretap as part of a plea bargain.

Put the CTU inside a walled garden. The reason for unauthorized wire taps is so that the incumbent party can snoop on citizens that oppose them or so that law enforcement officials can troll around looking for any activity even if it is not related to terrorism. Look at the way the Transportation Security Administration is abusing citizens. If you have to much cash in your pocket you are treated like a drug dealer if you have prescription drugs in a bottle other than the one with the pharmacy label on it you are treated like a drug addict. The reason that the politicians want to snoop on American Citizens is to suppress descent so that they can monitor the opposing party. Anything illegal activity discovered by snooping not authorized by a judge should be inadmissible in a court of law.

It is inadmissable in a trial. But not all wiretapping is about getting trial evidence. It is about stopping/preventing illegal & terrorist activity and not prosecuting them afterwards. I don't know about you, but I would prefer the government prevent terrorist actions than just prosecuting them after it happens.

Re: Put the CTU inside a walled garden. But if they start labeling all kinds of things "terrorism" wouldn't this.. make things a bit muddy? (Which they seem to be doing)
I was watching a video, I stumbled across a long time ago.. but it was Department of Homeland Security, I guess it was training or a meeting or something, anyways, it showed the guy in front telling everybody "The founding fathers were terrorist"... I didn't really pay attention to the video, but that one thing grabbed my attention.

I never realized he was a terrorist. And I guess the Democratic Party was also a terrorist organization. I mean, why else would Nixon have had their headquarters bugged?

There is a lot of discontent with the Obama administration among liberals, if that's what you mean. Check out any left leaning site like reddit and you'll see that.
The mainstream media has been making parallels between Carter and Obama for some time (middle east crisis with weak U.S. response, high oil prices, political backlash domestically, etc).
In any case, none of this absolves Bush. Obama is a prick for continuing this bullshit, and the prior administration shouldn't have started it. Regardless of who's in charge, law enforcement doesn't need any more expensive toys or privileges to "protect" me. All the past terror attempts on airlines were stopped by citizens, not the TSA or FBI.

Hate much?I've never seen so much hatred for our Government agencies that try to protect America and its citizens. So do you all want to be protected from terrorists, la cosa nostra, destructive hackers, etc anymore? i understand the argument that the Government shouldn't be able to listen in on anyone they want to. but a federal agent really isn't going to spend time listening to your phone call when you call a 1-800 sex line, email your mistress from your secret gmail account, or send a picture of your privates to a co-worker.

84,000 Sites closed downDidn't the FBI or some equivalent in the US, just recently shut down 84,000 sites wrongfully..and accused them of being kiddie porn sites ? I mean if they got this stuff right and they didn't screw up so much (read 90% of the time) , and they were not human and had no evil intentions, or at least it couldn't be used for bad purposes.. I'd be all for it. I think this is one of those penny wise pound foolish situations they are pulling. *sighs*

FBI To Announce Significant New Wiretap PushThere are many variations, but this sums up my feelings- » en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Ma ··· 3%B6llerWhen the Nazis came for the communists, I did not speak out; As I was not a communist. When they locked up the social democrats, I did not speak out; I was not a social democrat. When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; As I was not a trade unionist. Malware>>The potential abuse of such backdoors by both government and hackers is fairly obvious
I can see it now... a nice piece of malware or a worm to exploit the backdoors by some other country. Lets turn your equipment into a spam machine or zombie while your not looking.
Whats to keep the fed from sending out code to all those devices to shut them down, etc.
Didn't they already try that in IRAN with the PLC's?
If more people knew about this plan I think they would be pretty ticked off about it.

The US government has proven one thing true, it cannot keep anything digital under wraps.
*I say digital because they can hide secret military aircraft pretty well but if they put the blueprints on a computer odds are it would be on Limewire the next day.
