How come this is still allowed to happen? Why is everyone in the USA so apathetic these days? They get angry, strike out in unpredictable ways that always seem to make things worse, then settle into a year or two of apathy where the govt. craps all over them! WHY?

For me the answer to your questions is simple - I'm too busy at work trying to get work done so I keep my job and keep my family taken care of. You know the basics: food, clothing, shelter.

Re: How come this is still allowed to happen?Don't you dare get sick, otherwise you'll be replaced!.In addition, you now have to take 20 furlough days (unpaid , of course) but you will still be required to answer all call. Furthermore, Your benefit package is costing the business too much, so you will now be required to contribute 75% of you insurance contributions with a $5000 deductible, and all of your 401K contributions with no matching corporate contributions. You will still have to use the approved fund manager. Now since we've laid off half of your department, you will have to pick up the slack.
And most of all remember, you're lucky to have a job

I'm not American, but how does this fall under "Homeland Security".
Some of the sites I known they have taken down have nothing to do with the security of the United States of America. I could absolutely understand if they were sites on how to make bombs, supporting terrorists financially, etc. but sites that stream sports events?

ICE is the Imigration and Customs Enforcement arm of Homeland Security. Counterfeiting, Child Pornography, Copyright Infringement somehow fall under Customs. They used to deal a lot with fake items like furs and other counterfeit items being sold. Alot of the websites taken down in the first Block were websites that sold counterfeit items.
I'm not agreeing with them having the authority to do the takedowns, but that is how it falls under "HomeLand Security".

Re: How come this is still allowed to happen? So, in plain English: It doesn't, but they made an alphabet arm to make it. DHS was created to fight terrorists, not to fight profit loss for EA or MGM. Oh, they are also supposed to secure the borders..... But, they are much to busy dealing with profit loss for EA and MGM.

Oh, everything falls under DHS. Kid hit another kid at school, here comes DHS. Some one downloads a copy of black ops without paying, here comes the DHS. Don't like what the DHS is doing, here comes the DHS. Swear on TV, well... Here comes the DHS. Crap man, they can do everything! Sure, they do it all wrong, but they do it

Seig Heil-DHSI can understand the desire to shut down child porn counterfeiting etc. but how are these well-meaning(tongue in cheek) knuckle-dragging low browed cretins getting away with this? Then they have the audacity to put our "government" on a pedestal and trumpet to the world that this is the model for all freedom loving people to emulate. I'll can almost guarantee NOTHING will be done to address this trampling of rights because the US constitution is dead. Why, because the people we've elected to represent us will not stand up and protect us. They're too busy living the good life and planning their next campaign efforts. God help America because there isn't any help in Washington!
|
| |
Re: Seig Heil-DHSWelcome to New China. If all these new laws get passed that's exactly how our internet will be as well; let alone our country. So why would the politicians have any reason to give a shit about the average joe? They're rich, powerful elitists living the good life. They don't care if any one of us lives or dies. All they care about is which corporation is going to bid higher for their votes so they can get richer. Now I can't say that about all politicians because I know there are a few good ones out there, but not enough of them. It's a sick, sad world we live in and it's not going to change any time soon that's for sure. Nobody will help us if we don't help ourselves.

Freedom does not dissapear overnightFreedom disappears one little thing at a time. America is on a slippery slope downwards in many areas.
I came here from poor old Europe in the mid seventies and America was a great country to live in and truly the land of opportunity. The average middle class person did not spend half their life worried about how they were going to pay their bills and if they were going to have a job next week.

Re: Freedom does not dissapear overnightI really find it amusing that whenever government makes decisions, regardless of party, there's always someone out there talking about how the left or right messed it up. When will the idiotic masses understand that it makes no difference which side you're on, they do what they want. Left wing, right wing... makes no difference, both part of the same bird. Think of it as professional wrestling, in the ring they're paid to hate the opposition and to put on a show. Then after the show is over, they go have lunch together.

Re: Freedom does not dissapear overnightI hate to say this, but as a US Army Vet... hahahahahahaha. Sorry, you implied that we had been efficiently run. I believe out motto was hurry up and wait. Or was it, "If you don't like that command decision, wait 5 minutes." Non-electric pop up target with a life expectancy of 29 seconds, and survival odds being 1 out of 11. In 1997 I was using an anti-tank system that was developed around the time of my birth, and for the live fire I was selected to go first because I was not married (and the weapon was as old as I was). Now, where did I put my Blue Cord.

The Social Security System? The same system that will be bankrupt in 10 years? Other than our military our government has not ran anything well. Let's take NASA for example, We are now on track to pay the Russians to ride into space, wow go USA. The problem with our government is it's to large and to many people sucking off the taxpayer titty. Run out of money?..No problem..let's raise taxes on all those evil people that employee the majority of American's...Thats the plan. Disgust

Communally brewed ale would suck. As would almost all commodities and elective purchases. Like managing anything social (love life, neighborhood, workplace, city, country) there is no one answer: it's always a hybrid requiring constant, tedious, collaborative attention & tweaking. In the realm governing performed by multi-multi party reps balanced by pro, lifer policy wonks. Public needs transparency and reactive recourse but also kept at arms length. When simplistic ideologues of ANY stripe make too large an inroad everything goes to shit. Same as keeping mum, dad, and older sister at bay in the 15-24 age range. 15 'til mother's death if Jewish. - - - - edit: Ha! Sterlingo and I were typing in unison.

Not really a surprise. If Homeland Securitywants to take something, they will find ways to do it, legal or not.
Little to no punishment if they do something KNOWING it is illegal
|
|
For Something to Happen...One of the owners of a seized domain has to take it to court, then it has to wind its way through the courts...so in 5 years we will know it is definitely illegal. It takes that long because dockets are so stretched right now because of the couple HUNDRED vacancies on the federal courts that republicans wont let come to the floor of the Senate

Spawn of 9/11It all started when we allowed Bush and Congress to enact the Patriots Act. We gave up liberty for the belief they could/would protect us. The millions of USA shep-citizens just stood by and watched it happen, and now they are experiencing the product of their indifference. Would that I could piss on them all.

sad day for for 84,000 web sites and billions of web surfersIn the name of the richest 2%, a sad day for for 84,000 web sites and billions of web surfers that hit the walls today.
millions if not billions of hours lost for regular you and me.
x $8/hr minimum wage, I think the nation just took a huge backward step for National Economics in the Millions of Dollars.
great job for DHS today.
PS please do not forget the terrorists are still out there, out of the office, not in the office in front of your comfortable chairs and free computers (taxpayer's paid).
PPS now we know DHS is good a one thing make the days worse for 98% of the Americans
PPPS when you're done with the terrorist, don't forget Iran, North Korean and China should be your next homework assignment.

Re: sad day for for 84,000 web sites and billions of web surfersHow about if skirting the problem stopped and focus on actual problems. How does seizing a domain that has child pron protect the children?
The children were already molested, photographed or had video.
Why are they not going after the actual hosts of these sites instead of seizing a domain? They still exist!
Politicians are always so quick to claim protecting the children when they work toward adding new censorship laws and powers. The children are already being exploited and law enforcement acts like these seizures are actually doing something to stop that exploitation; sure /not.
Where is real due process; ridiculous advice and orders? My problem with government and technology is that those welding the stick don't have a clue, at all about the topic, in so much these 'Leaders' couldn't hold a 6th grade conversation regards technology and it's use or management. Let alone understand the topic.

using another DNS Server ?I have a question. Can you use one of those foreign free DNS servers (proxy server ?) to connect to websites that COICA might take down or this government for whatever reason might take down ?

Re: using another DNS Server ?It doesn't matter. Whoever controls the domain reigns supreme, sort of. In other words, if you run .com, it doesn't matter from where in the world you query; the authoritative response is the authoritative respose. The only other solution is to go out on a limb and use a so-called "alternate root," which an extremely small percentage of Internet users use. Even then, the vast majority of them don't just go rewriting whole top-level domains, they still refer queries for the majors like .com, .net, and .org (among others) to the ICANN DNS servers. They don't want to take that kind of responsibility for millions of domains. Shtuff would break all over the place, so noone would use their alternate DNS system because it would be close to useless. If you happened to know the IP address ahead of time, you MIGHT have a shot at accessing some Web site/other service. But with name virtual hosting, typically not enough information is sent in the request to determine which set of pages to serve up. Plus with the "huge" size of IPv6 addresses, memorizing IP addresses is lots less practical (once we migrate).
|
|
coica...will most likely pass; the entertainment industry owns enough people in Congress to get it passed. Voting against it will mean congressmen will lose millions in "election campaign funds" (aka bribes) ; and they need the money to get re-elected and to fund their lifestyles.

What gets meI'm Canadian, so I'm not directly affected by DHS, but... there is lots noise about a copyright law. that is more draconian then the DMCA, in the works for us Canadian peasants.
Anyway, what I have a problem with is that these corporations, in the guise of protecting their IP,(which frankly I don't have an issue with), are using the taxpayer to do so.
If someone out there has a website selling bootleg copies of say the movie Kings Speech , then go to court, and get the guy shut down, don't spend the taxpayers dollar getting government officials do your work for you (and the work is questionable at best).
