I'll bet if you want a Xoom without a data plan, you will be far down the waiting list for one.
Besides if you want a Xoom w/o a data plan, might as well wait for a WiFi only version supposedly coming in May and for $200 less at $600. |

 | Verizon seems to have forgotten how to release a product Can Verizon please explain what the hell is going on with HTC Thunderbolt release? It is turning into the Duke Nukem release of cellphones. |

Re: Good for Verizon; but $800 unsubsidized Xoom still expensive What are you talking about?
Verizon would certainly get more than nothing. The fact that they would be selling it UNsubsidized means that they would be getting any profit from a straight purchase of the Xoom over their cost of obtaining the product.
The $600 subsidized price is there for them to sell it "cheaper" but to make more money over time.
You're insane to think they would get nothing from an unsubsidized sale. As far as we know, they could be getting the entire $200 from an unsubsidized sale. |

Re: UNLOCKED phones now Because then you are locked into a high price carrier. T-mobile for example will give you 10-30 dollars a month off your plan if you are not on contract. Smaller carriers like Metropcs and cricket have far more affordable plans as well (too bad they are cdma which limits the benefits of unlocked phones) |

Agreed, but there are many "gotta have it now" consumers that won't want to wait. Plus, it might be nice to have an option for 3/4G for that rare month when WiFi just won't cut it. |

Re: Verizon seems to have forgotten how to release a product Maybe trying to avoid another "Xoom release". Compound that with the Skype issue and the fact that Apple is now selling "Thunderbolt" on its Macs (definitely don't want consumers confusing that one ), and one can imagine the logic behind the obscurity. |

Re: UNLOCKED phones now and forever People think they are getting a great deal when they get a free or discounted phone from the carrier. If you figure how much you are paying for that phone by signing a contract, more people would buy unlocked phones. |

Re: UNLOCKED phones now and forever I don't know if people think they're getting a great deal. For me, it's just simple to go that route. Now if they discount money off the monthly plan once you're off contract, that's something worthwhile. But, if I have to $500 for an unlocked phone, versus $199.00 for a subsidized phone, that discount better be at least $10/month. |

 | Still cripples the phones... Recall why we needed SEEM editors: Verizon locked them
Now Verizon is disabling Bluetooth HID file access (keyboards, mice...) for Xoom and Galaxy Tab.
It's greed and control at its worst. |

Re: UNLOCKED phones now That's if you're lucky. I've had tmobile a long time ago but managed to get $10 off per month for 6 months. I was never again able to get them to give me any kind of discount.
I'm currently on att now with no contract. I've tried several times to get the rep to give me some discounts with no luck at all. The way I see it is, I could have been 8 months into a new contract already but instead I'm under no contract with no discounts. |

Re: UNLOCKED phones now and forever Not being under contract doesn't guarantee you a discount. I've tried many times and have been denied. Ofcourse I could cancel, but why would I? I'm sure some people like to switch carriers like their socks and underwear, but the majority like to stick with one carrier of their choice. In that situation, getting a subsidized phone is much better than paying full retail price which can be up to $600 or more.
Don't let the retail buyers fool you. They're likely paying the same price as you are. The only difference is they can cancel anytime while you would be under contract. But since you wouldn't plan on canceling anyway, there's no benefit to you.
I'm in the same boat. I've been out of contract for about 8 months and the reps have refused any loyalty discounts. Some people get lucky, some won't. I'd rather not spend $600 andbet on the discount being given. |

Re: UNLOCKED phones now It's mind boggling, really. I mean US consumers pretty much demanded locked phones. Just go to any tech blog/forums, and you'll find many people defending this anti-consumer practice. Amazing and sad. |
