Netflix/cable/redbox, which to keepI havent had cable for 5 years and just got it this year because VZ basically gave my extreme for $35 with a DVR. In two months however (one year) that is going to go to $65 when they slap me w/ the DVR fee, and now that sage is gone I will need another 2 receivers. 2plan w/ blu will be going to $24 month. Redbox - Used once in my life BECAUSE of netflix. Yes it's 2 min down the road, but I noticed very few blu ray and that is what I like about netflix. I also dont like to burn fossil fuels if necessary. So I am seriously considering to dump my triple play, go to a business only FIOS (no caps, actual CS, and a SLA contract), port my old landline to a freebie just to keep, and going back to using SageTV. Problem w/ Sage is that outside of hdhomerun, nothing works reliably and now its google, so I need to have a DVR. I may suck it up and go to WMC or myth (its buggy tho). Netflix streaming is great for my kids who watch the old cartoons and NO COMMERCIALS, like sage. I value no commercials because I dont want the kids minds diluted w/ commercial crap so some home sage-like DVR is necessary. So if I dump phone/cable that will save me $80-$90/month, and netflix is only asking for $5 more. In reality my wife watches 95% of her TV on broadcast, and I watch practically none. So until netflix gets to $80/month it's still a better deal than the cable socialists. And at $23 and I get to choose, it's a no-brainer. I'm bumping on 40, so having a movie in the first 30 days or even 6 months doesnt matter. All of my friends work 80 hours a week, so cooler talk around the latest movie hasnt happened to me in 10 years. For teeny boppers who's life is social networking, I can understand but somewhere when you have a job and kids, being first to see a movie is like 98 on my triage list. Some people forget that before Netflix, the Blockbuster scumbags would charge you $2 for 2 days (after Netflix gave them competition), and if you return it late, tack on another $4. There was always some hidden fee or expired goobers sitting in the aisles. Cmon people, we all know the studios/content owners are behind the kicker, so don't blame it on Netflix. I've been with them since 2005...and it has saved me agita from Blockbuster, and my kids watching commercials, all that for $20...ok $25 w/ NYS taxes next month. Thats like 4 lattes in NYC Besides Verizon is turning into an oppressive regime again (man I remember NYNEX - $5 for touch tone) and since they are now a major content distributor its only a matter of time before they "nudge" you into an actuary hell of fees and packages with no escape. Make no mistake the Panzers are readying caps for FIOS. They already shut down wireless, and soon they will charge for Wifi. Ask someone in the know, why they bought Terremark...Then you would really be scared. I know you guys know better |

Re: So for a 5/out DVD user - what does this actually mean? But how does Netflix know which I want to keep? I.e. I have to change my plan right?
Also, we had purchased a year gift subscription a few months ago. What is happening to that user - what do they have to do? |

Redbox...here I come...again.This is the first I've heard of the price increase. I'm going to change my account to streaming only when I get home.
I currently have the 1 DVD out-at-a-time plan, plus the streaming.
I've been getting my 1 DVD at a time - but never have I gotten more than 6 per month, so Redbox looks like a better deal to me.
I mean, I get the DVD, maybe watch it within a day or so, maybe return it the next day or the day after that, so being really lazy that's like 1 DVD per week (aka 4 to 5 DVD's per month).
Redbox charges $1.10 per DVD (but of course I have to return it the next day or get charged another $1), so even if I did get 6 DVDs in a month, I'm still only out a total of $14.60, and I get to choose what's available right in front of me and get it right then and there instead of having to add it to my queue and wait 2 days (or more).
Heck, I just rented Battle: Los Angeles from my local Redbox the other day - and up to last night it was also in my Netflix Queue with a status of "Really long wait".

Re: There's Always RedBoxWe've yet to encounter a full RedBox. So far, no problems. Yes, selection is limited. We don't watch that many movies normally. We don't want to be roped into a monthly commitment, so even if on occasion we rent 8 movies in a single month, the next month we might only rent 2 or 3. We're very selective in what we spend our limited free time watching. Sometimes we buy the Blu-ray disc if it's a very good film, at Costco or online at Amazon. Costco has weekly specials where a Blu-ray disc can be had for $8.99. We've picked up a few classics that way. |

Re: Netflix/cable/redbox, which to keepWell Netflix is still the better deal. it all depends what you watch and how much time you sit at home. I told my nephew who moved out on his own to save the $60 or $75 a month for cable tv. He got HSI for $30 a month and Netflix streaming only for $7.99. He has an Antenna so he gets all the OTA networks in HD as well as many more channels like This, MeTV, MeTV Too, Antenna TV.
I might drop my DISH and save the $44.99 a month as well. I have an antenna to pick up all the Chicago-land channels. |

Re: Unlimited DVDsI never had a problem getting my DVD's fast.
Get one on Monday. Mail bacck on Tuesday Received on Wednesday Get another on Thursday.
Since Feb 2010.
I since dropped the DVD plan and just stayed with Streaming. A lot of content to watch that I have never seen. And I can choose when I want to watch.
Chicago area and the distribution center is in Carol Stream. Might be why I have always gotten them the next day after returning one. |

Re: Bitch and complainIt is cheaper. I can see Netflix point that Stream was $7.99 a month and to add unlimited DVDs ( 1 at a time) was only $2 more. They seemed very low. Netflix is a business trying to make money. The studios are asking for more and more of a cut. How can Netflix make a profit at $2 for the DVD plan and pay the studios and Postage. If some one gets 6 DVD's a month that is $0.33 a DVD rental. Netflix spends more on postage
Blame the Studios. |

Re: fine raise prices for streamingStreaming will be the future of Netfix. They want to get rid of the DVD plans and stick to Streaming. The savings on Postage alone is in the $ millions. |

They are now checking electronic devices for porn, illegal content and copyright infringment at US borders. Don't cross any borders with illegally ripped material! My "Bullshit meter" is pegged in the red. You are going to need to link a credible source before I would ever believe that Customs has the time to have every person boot up their electronic device and stand around while it is scanned and the data analyzed. Not "every". It is enough to get an idiot agent to start looking randomly at your stuff, not like your face, confiscate your device and then take their sweet time to charge you with anything they could think of. Happened a lot in Russia, now common practice in the "land of the free". All BS !!! |

Re: Redbox...here I come...again.Yup. Switched to streaming only for $7.99/mo. And in a month or two when I move to a better apartment/house, I'll drop them all together and go to verizon fios for all my needs.
I've only been using Netflix as a temporary measure since I had been unemployed for a long time, and I cancelled my phone and cable service (keeping only internet).
Apparently the mass change they are making takes effect on July 27th, so if your current bill is due before then, you'll still get the cheaper rate; but your August bill will be at the higher $15.99 rate.

Then studios can release films at a modest price. |

Re: Bitch and complainIt's cheaper still and they may have to do it to survive, what I think is making most people mad including myself is the way they went about handling it.
If I walk into a McDonalds and order a Big Mac I don't expect to pay $9 for it then listen to them say "well our costs have gone up, we didn't expect people to still want Big Macs this day and age we were hoping that by now everyone started ordered our fries through the drive through because it's much more profitable. But hey, your just one pissed off customer you only represent a very small majority and we are going to survive with you or without you because after all were McDonalds! We hate to see you go but don't let the door hit you on your way out.
I myself won't come here to the rant forum and bawl about it all day but I don't blame people who do, and I for one most certainly will never return to a company that treats it's users that way. I moved to Hulu (which was surprisingly very good I like it better already) |

Re: Why pay for Netflix's streaming when...Wow, you are really gullible. You fall for that bullshit? Obviously they were already charging too much and people told them to go fuck themselves and started downloading their shit for free instead.
Bottom line is, make better movies and people will buy them. I pirate movies frequently, but won't even waste my bandwidth on 95% of the shit that's out there. |

Re: Physical media hardly deadsaid by gorehound:Poopflix cost me my job of 18 years.I really do wish they would die or better yet why don't you people get off your ass and take a nice walk to the local video store even once a week to give local economy a boost. The more the studios gauge Poopflix the happier I am and I am sure my ex-boss is. Come on down to Videoport in Portland,ME where human beings still serve you and taxes still goes to the state and the city of Portland. This is the trend of modern day capitalism. Take take take, give nothing back. And you're absolutely right, the local businesses, local governments, and local people are all being scammed out of their hard earned money, and will soon have to sell their "souls" back to these people just to get a bite to eat. I give it about 5 more years before North Americans see the final collapse of our "Western Empire" Didn't anyone take notes about the Roman Empire in high-school History class? /snicker |

Netflix is still an incredible company.Netflix is still an incredible company. True, they need to beef up their streamed offerings, but they offer a great service for the price. Even with the increase. The services we were receiving for the low prices were taken for granted and I understand its hard to see a 60% increase, but in all reality its only a few bucks. Anyways, some people are actually making out better with the increase and paying less. It all depends on what you want from Netflix. I'm a big fan of the company though and their customer service is amazing. I won't be going anywhere anytime soon. |
