generic drugs

calling DSL obsolete is like a drug company watching it's top product go off patent,
so they can no longer make fat profits as every generic drug maker can sell it now,
so instead they come out with a new drug, that isn't any better, just more profitable.

i'm using DSL now since throwing out my 56k modem,
and i can't really see needing any more than that.
in the meantime, Verizon charges me $40 for a line
that costs them $7 to provide, but even that's not
enough profit for these monopolists.

fatter profit margins is the only reason why they "talk" DSL into an early grave.

Re: generic drugs

Following along this same train of thought, I know quite a few people stuck on dial-up that would be happy with any form of DSL. Many web services are just not usable on dial-up anymore.

So glad they stopped where they did!

For some apparent reason when ATT rolled Uverse into My neighborhood, they stopped the block before My block. I then switched to Comcast, this was back in November. I am so glad they stopped because I now would be trapped with their crappy service!!

DSL is

DSL has been obsolete since 1997-1999 or so with a maximum of 2002 or so.

If you look at FTTH goin on in china, japan, italy, and korea (france was very late starting around 2003) they realized dsl was dead then and started building their FTTH network.

guess what... those countries have good internet connections now and it wasnt insanely bad for their business models and they are pretty damn future proof.

Right now 10mbit to 25mbit is just fine. This gives you HD and all that. It's pretty unlikely you will need that much more anytime soon. Except these FTTH networks effectively have gigabit to each house. By the time gigabit is even near to where anyone needs that much. Toss another gigabit line in and hey suddenly they are awesome again.

So the reality is that when adsl2 and docsis 2 were comin out. the engineers were basically saying 'not sure we goin to get much more out of these' it took years to get another upgrade. Smart ISPs saw this and immediately saw back in 1999-2000 area they need to get away from the copper.

Meanwhile more dumbass countries like canada and usa. 'OMG we are making sooo much money off this old tech the government paid for decades ago. Pure profit. Lets just sit back and let the money roll in.'

They call this obsolete ?

AT&T U-Verse "rocks" ... then again it's the only decent game in my town.
HDTV - no satellite fade
VOIP - crystal clear call "end to end"
DSL - 12 meg .. kewl for HBO-Go and Netflix streaming
Video - both the U-verse freebies and Amazon Prime

Ooooops .. I don't do Smart Phone .. kindah stupid looking at a small screen and my fingers are "manly" so I can't type on those tiny keys.

But I do have a Sprint Taho ... perfect to make phone calls !

I don't spend that much for these obsolete services but they work like a charm and my monthly cell phone bill is "cheap" ...LMAO LMAO

Re: They call this obsolete ?

My fingers are 'manly', and my arms and legs are. I go to the gym 2-3 times a day, run 6 miles (on amts at the gym) and lift heavy weights.

And I use smartphones.

That crap on U-verse that AT&T claims is HD is not HDTV. AT&T's HD picture quality is so bitrate-starved it is on par with DVD video.

U-Verse unlike just about all other sat and cable systems as they force you to buy showtime and Starz AKA The Movie Package as part of U-300

To get

MLB Network -not also in sports pack
NBA TV -not also in sports pack

Reelz Channel
CNN International
Fox Business Network
CNBC World
Investigation Discovery
NASA TV -FTA
Discovery Fit & Health
Planet Green
ION Life -OTA sub channel in areas with ION
BET Gospel
CMT Pure Country

also need sports pack or U-450 to get
NHL network
CBS Sports Network - old CBS College Sports Network

On directv, dish, and most cable systems you don't need a movies pack or sports pack to get
MLB Network
NBA TV
NHL network
CBS Sports Network

and all the other listed non sports channels.

Industry FUD...

It's soooo nice to see the industry shills out in full force on both sides.

Crapheads, I deal with this for a living, you're both wrong and you're both right.

Competition IS the real answer, not MORE Gummint control.

Comcrap, you want a level playing field in data? Lower your bleed the customer dry prices!

AT&MotherFin'T, you want a level playing field in TV? UPGRADE your damn Infrastructure and compete on price and availability!!!

Y'all want to play in the wireless arena? Again, INFRASTRUCTURE. AT&MotherFin'T, your voice service sucks donkey dick, everywhere. Fix it, or lose subs.

Comcrap, stop playing the behind the scenes Puppetmaster. You own huge chucks of Clear, Sprint and other wireless companies, brand it, or lose subs.

*headshake* over corporate subservience to the bottom line.

In Other News...

AT&T's CEO was suddenly rushed to an undisclosed medical facility by AT&T investors and other senior executives. Media relations attributed it to stress and that a press release and updated statement from the CEO would be forthcoming.

att sold to comcast now they are chasing them

AT&T was stupid for selling it's cable assets to comcast. Now they are chasing comcast instead of leading comcast. They wouldn't even have to worry about uverse instead offering cable to their phone subs but their ceo wasn't exactly smart.

AT&T DSL 'national emergency'?

My service just stopped on Sunday. Diagnosis - exterior line. Repair person didnt show today. Finally reached someone who said they couldnt commit to a date certain because there are massive outages. State of emergency started on July 12th. It has not been on the news so I find it hard to believe but this discussion gives it credence. Any insight?

If DSL is obsolete(which it is), then

1) What happens to AT&T's current DSL properties?

2) This is why Verizon sold off so many more rural properties to Fairpoint and Frontier. VZ knew it was obsolete, and a waste of $.

3) This is why both Fairpoint and Frontier spend so much time and $ on expanding DSL They want to please state utility commissions, who are behind the times. The PUC's will be happy if they get 99% internet coverage of 1MB.

AT&T Lies

The reason that AT&T is calling DSL obsolete is because they dont want to spend the money upgrading the lines to fiber. They are just cheaping out and charging customers more for doing it. I have been with AT&T for a good 7 years and they pounded the last nail into their coffin when they initiated a 150GB bandwidth limit on their DSL subscribers without any notice and without any way to check your usage. The played the same game when they eliminated Usenet from their service. Serious breach of contract. And they know that there is nothing that people who are with them can do about it except what I am doing now. Switching services. For all of those who have AT&T now, consider a new service. I hear DSL Extreme is a great company.
