Re: heh..

The CWA won't agree with Sprint, because Sprint doesn't employ CWA workers. AT&T does.

THAT'S why they're supporting AT&T in the merger. They're figuring it's better to lose jobs from the company that employs them than agree with a company that doesn't.

There was a third option. Keep their yaps shut. Shoulda taken that path.

Re: heh..

karl makes it sound like the CWA won't even lose any jobs in the AT&T deal. They'll actually add 20k T-mobile employees into the union. Probably at least a net positive for them overall.

Sprint, TMO, ATTW/Mobility

jobs are far from being Union. 99% of those jobs are outsourced anyway. Sprint will NEVER be union, TMO either and Mobility's call centers are far and few between that are actually owned by T Mobility, LLC. CWA just has $$$ attached to T in getting more wireline jobs back to the US than anything.

Merge with caution (or better, don't merge at all)

Looks like the interests of AT&T and the CWA are the same with respect to the proposed purchase of T-Mobile. If big business and big labor want something, it's unusual for them not to get it.

CWA is a joke

Who would take them seriously anyway? They use all caps in their argument. Some intern probably wrote that with his rich daddy supervising.

CWA stuck on stupid!

Are these people at the CWA out of their FUCKING minds?

Really... do these fuckheads have any common sense.

I've love to see who's getting the kickbacks and money under the table for supporting something that will ultimately hurt consumers.

Maybe what should happen is AT&T+TMobile+Sprint+Verizon should all merge, and 2 years later the DoJ break them up again into 20 smaller companies. It should take them 25+ years to recombine again.

It is a common tactic as reported here that AT&T has been greasing the palms of various advocacy groups to have them shill for this merger. The CWA is no different.

Typical union.

Trying to prove it has a purpose and worth. No natter if it costs some of it's members jobs. No matter if it hoses the consumer over with higher prices.

Is AT&T funding this?

Of course they oppose Sprint - I'd bet my last dollar they have their hands far into Ma Bell's pockets right now. I wonder how much AT&T has "gifted" the CWA with for this little stunt.

What's more? Talk to anyone working for T-Mobile; they're guaranteed to have a few choice words about this horrifying potential merger. From that aspect, the CWA is not accurately representing the best interest of its own industry workers.

i have taken the time to talk with several TMO employees- and mangers of actual retail stores. I'm a TMO Business customer and everyone seems to like the idea. Nothing bad to say about it and are welcoming the change from DT.

Re: Is AT&T funding this?

We have a T-Mobile call center where I live, and from what I've heard from employees and supervisors there, most have already mentally prepared themselves for the unemployment line. Most of them are just trying to make as much money as they can right now before the merger, because they know their center will be shut down afterward.

Re: Is AT&T funding this?

even if the AT&T deal doesn't go through, you're going to see a lot of belt tightening at T-mobile USA. T-mobile USA is going to have to cut costs to stay competitive since DT doesn't want to invest in them anymore. Sadly, they may well be on the unemployment line regardless of what happens.

Ma Bell? She died in 1984, when the government broke her into eight pieces. Four of those pieces have not been brought back together, and likely never will.

• USWest(1). Formerly a part of Qwest, now a part of CenturyLink,
• Bell Atlantic(2) and NYNEX(3), now a part of Verizon.
• Western Electric(4), now a part of Alcatel.

Bad Move

The union should stay neutral. Some people hate unions so much they would oppose this merger just to spite the union.

AT&T Layoffs

Didn't AT&T just layoff a bunch of people a while back? Where was the Union then? I think the Union is dead wrong in this one, and I agree they should be staying neutral.

The administraton is in the middle of a shouting match

The corporations want this deal. The unions want this deal. Who ever though both sides of the aisle would agree on something?

Could both sides squeeze the deal through? The Obama administration is already on the bad side of organized labor since it failed to get card-check through. It's standing up for the union against Boeing. On the other hand, there is an election in 2012 and if the deal gets shot down then ATT, the biggest campaign donator might just decide that no candidate is worth their money.

An interesting few months are ahead of us.

Bad thinking

I've been in an employee union over thirty years (not in telecom). The "CWA" leadership position favoring the Att/TMO merger is foolish, and will harm the union in the longrun.

Use your brain folks.

Making unions illegal would solve many problems

The unions are the source of most of our problems, NOT the answer. They artificially inflate prices on goods and services to the point that many people can not afford things that should be cheap. I wont disagree with the fact that at one time (a long, long time ago) the unions accomplished good things, however now they are nothing more than organized crime. Kill the unions and make people actually compete for their jobs and you will see everything improve. I know its an outrageous, outlandish concept that people should actually need to work for a living!

Great idea! Make it easier for hard working Americans to be fired and laid-off at the whim of big business!

I won't argue that unions are the good guys; they definitely need some change and they need some corruption rooted out. But, you say you want to force people to actually compete for their jobs... without unions some of these jobs wouldn't even exist. The 'free-market' would have eliminated them or shipped them overseas long ago.

My $.02 on the matter...I agree that some jobs may not have existed, but correct me if I'm wrong, isn't the whole point of the American Dream to work hard and earn your keep? To work for opportunities, not have them handed to you on a platter?

When I say you, I'm not referring to you you, just in general.

Absolutely. What makes you so special that you should have a guaranteed job for life?? Are you scared that if you had to work for a living you might get replaced by someone more qualified who is willing to work for less? The great thing about non union jobs is that everyone is 'at will'. This means if you dont pull your weight each day you will get fired. I know the concept of keeping your job based on performance might be shocking, but welcome to the (non union) reality of the world.

Let's see, what is the sole purpose of a corporation? To make money, profit plain and simple, nothing else. If you find anything else a corporation exists for I'd love to know. What is a union's purpose for existing? To increase the standard of living of its member and to increase its membership. You wish to ban the unions and through yourself into being a wage slave for a corporation. I can tell you don't have a union job because you believe union workers don't work. I currently work a union job in the communications industry and me and my fellow union employees bust our asses! Outside in all manner of weather. As an individual I stand no chance against a 100 billion dollar corporation with army's of lawyers and accounts trying to get my labor for the least amount of money and benefits. Together as a union we get good wages and benefits. Corporations are not benevolent entities. If a corporation could make a profit from putting a child to work in a coal mine for 14 hours a day, they would. How do we know this? Because they have in the past. If there weren't laws against it they would do it now.

Does AT&T Work For Public Interests?

Yeah, Sprint's action is for its own interests. Then how about AT&T's? Isn't the merger for AT&T's self-interests? Is AT&T working for public interests? If yes, why doesn't it lower the charges and improve the coverage?

Then the question is: given this merger will reduce competition in the market, should the government approve it? We should think about it seriously.

unions ... geez

at&t doesn't have to 'grease' the union to support the merger.
once merged, CWA will gain all the technicians that work on the wireless gear ... as members. They're bargained for employees, in the at&t world. The dues alone, are more than enough 'grease' to keep CWA drooling over the approval of this tomfoolery.
The duplicate jobs that will be cut, as a result of this merger, are mostly management positions. The union does give two doo-doos about management level positions. Not even mid-level managers.
The only thing that would get CWA more fired up, would be if the IT workforce was unionizing. Unions have been drooling over IT for over a decade.

What burns my bacon (and did when I worked for at&t/SBC) was the mass e-mailings that would go out, urging employees to write your representatives in congress, or the FCC to urge them to support the merger. They made it SO simple. Fields that auto-populate from HR databases. All you have to do is click a button, and it's done.
What's more ... if you refused to do this, your manager would come 'talk' to you.
Yes! Back when the Ameritech merger was going on, my boss came over and actually had the balls to threaten my job, if I didn't click the button! Like Hell!
If you think I'm gonna let my employer tell me what opinions to have, you've got another thing coming!

Once upon a time, I did love working for SBC ... but now, I'm beyond thrilled, to NOT be an at&t employee! Those asshats can eat my shorts!

Death to at&t!
Down with Lerch & Darth Felo!

CWA is a union not a consumer protection organization

The CWA is a union, which means its obligation is to look out for its member and increase the size of its membership, not to look out for consumers. The ATT/T-mobile deal is bad for consumers and this country, but it would take all the non management T-mobile workers and make them unionized(because ATT wireless is unionized, T-mobile isn't) CWA is looking out for its interests in this deal. All entities here: ATT, T-mobile, CWA and Sprint are simply acting in their own self interests. It is not surprising at all. The world would be a better place if the consumers and the nation's well being were put ahead of narrow self interest, but sadly that is not how corporations, unions, or people behave.
