Comments on news posted 2012-01-16 10:23:02: Last week supporters of both SOPA (in the House) and PIPA (in the Senate) tried their best to downplay opposition to the controversial laws, in the process accusing law opponents like Google and Open DNS of secretly helping pirates. ..

Although this is good, lets not forget that our elected officials will again try and get this bill passed. As the others have quoted already, our corporate sponsored government officials agenda is to protect the music/movie industry, as they have already accepted the funds.

I think an episode of the Simpsons even made fun of hiding stupid laws inside bills you know will pass.

Instant sell to the general Fox News crowd is some anti-terrorism bill with SOPA hidden well away on page 10,000.

That's debatable. A lot of the US is very spread out. And to do so means running completely new infrastructure (i.e. fiber) everywhere. Verizon tried that; it was very, very expensive, and they quite stupidly sold a bunch of it. (to morons who don't know how to use it.) The few municipal networks that have been built suggests it's possible, however, they aren't out to be a for-profit enterprise. (and if you believe the propaganda, they're completely built and funded by tax money.)

Re: voting..

By my rekoning, it's a combination of (mostly) greed, and lazy. They have no competition which means no pressure to upgrade. And they already have a massively profitable pig, so they have no desire (or willingness) to take any chances at all -- they won't do anything new until someone else takes all the risks and makes money at it. (it's the Microsoft Way(tm)... let someone else build the business and then take it away from them.)

The part about tax-funded is a joke. They are only *partly* funded by tax revenue, and even then, it's in the form of bonds which eventually get paid back -- unless the local monopolies bleed them dry with legal red tape (or *cough* buy their own set of laws making it illegal to even ask.)

Long-term is not what it used to be. CEOs, investors, and shareholders want money now, not tomorrow, and not 3-5 years from now.

Sadly, intelligence isn't a requirement of voting. That is the only reason that I can think of that explains why you had/have congressmen in office for 20 plus years. The zombie voter goes in, votes his party, then goes home. While at home rants about how bad congress is doing, but when election time hits again, pulls his zombie act.

Until the voters stop voting like zombies and keep the same bums in office, the government will never change.

Not necessarily "zombie" voters but more gerrymandering. These guys are in safe districts and know it. Just fixing that, could probably eliminate a lot of the corruption and corporate bribes. Think about it, these guys would actually have to work to get reelected. What a concept.

High on my list would be Joe Biden. He's the reason I went third party last election.

The federal gov blocked the AT&T / T-mobile merger, that's the kind of thing needed for improved competition which will lead to higher broadband speeds. They can't regulate their way to requiring faster speeds, that's really up to municipal governments.

Right, so the votes that came in that were from people that have been deceased weren't proof enough? Seriously how are you gonna vote in a primary if you've been dead for 6 years? This was a constant turn up problem in 2008 and i'm not gonna be surprised to see it turn up again..

Iowa this year stated that they would not let one of the candidates win at any cost. You can be smug smug all you want. This system is not bullet proof.. Do I dare bring up Acorn?

Wow - hyperbole much?

Please, provide one reputable study that shows anything different than what I just said. Even the MSM notes this every time they interview anyone trying to push this debunked theory in an attempt to rationalize their moves to push through extremest voting laws that do nothing other than disenfranchising the elderly, the young, and anyone else who has a different view than they have.

The only thing you MIGHT have a point about is where some states allow anyone to vote in primaries regardless of their affiliation with the party having the primary. Given the fact that what's good for the goose is also good for the gander, it falls flat once looked at closely...

Many news sites have removed many I'm guessing due to the amount of time passed, but for some light reading:

»online.wsj.com/article/SB1241827···435.html
»pjmedia.com/blog/the-complete-gu···r-fraud/
»www.judicialwatch.org/press-room···igation/

This one i'm not soo sure about, and the link in the page to the news source has been changed so it doesn't follow anywhere, but what the hell:
»angrywhitedude.com/2008/10/the-l···r-obama/

Something that botheres me is that just with a couple states having fraud tends to set in motion the next president of the country.. Like Mitt winning Iowa and NH. People are already handing him the crown. But when later on if they find out that in fact, say Santorum won Iowa instead how will it be reflected? It won't, simple as that.. Things can easily be manipulated to shape someone to be the GOP/DEM primary within a couple small states knowing that a back count will not happen anytime soon to hault the hype that is who the lead person is..

So why were they not prosecuted under existing law? My point is that there is no need for more legislation when effective use of existing laws is sufficient to deal with cases such as those you list.

The problem in your examples is corruption and apathy, not a lack of tools to prosecute that corruption...

An attack from 3 sides

The politicians who supported SOPA will come out against the bill after the public out cry, but then they will try to pass PIPA or the Protect IP act, claiming they are a much better bill then SOPA.

When in reality they are almost all the same. An attack from 3 sides.

They are probably temporarily shelving this bill in an effort to stop the internet wide black out protest on the 18th that big sites like reddit.com are doing to raise awareness about these bills.

Public awareness is the government and entertainment industry's nightmare.

However I think "son of SOPA" is coming and it would behoove the Internet community to get involved in the technical details and not just rail against the concept. What Rep. The Pirate Bay Act

Why not call it what it is? They want so f'ing desperately to kill the pirate bay. The thing is, the morons with tiny brains cannot understand US law doesn't apply outside the US. NONE of the pirate bay has ANYTHING to do with the US. If you want to "take a lesson from China", it should be how obviously flawed and ineffective their efforts to firewall the country have been. (not to forget you're proposing we emulate an oppressive, communist country that has killed it's own citizens more than once.) The only thing that will be remotely effective here is 1930s style gangster leg breaking... hunt down every person responsible for the site and "fill them full of lead"; then hunt down the servers and destroy them. (and likely the facility hosting them -- in the famous tpb raid, the thugs took entire racks that had nothing to do with the pirate bay.)

Everyone like to make up numbers showing how much they *think* the pirate bay generates. For starters, it's a complete d***ed guess. Only two people know for sure... the ad networks writing the checks, and whomever at the pirate bay cashing them. (and only the pirate bay knows the *total*.) And every one of those articles completely glosses over just how expensive it is to run the site. The servers aren't free. Hosting is not free. Bandwidth is not free. Their location hiding VPN service is not free. Nothing about it is "free". Even if the guess is correct ($171,000 in '09), I'm pretty sure most of it went towards operating costs.

(Running my own sites, I can tell you that you cannot simply guess what the ad revenues are. You don't know how many page views there are, how much each ad is worth, or even what ad campaigns are running -- you will only know about the ads that have been shown to you.)

My Congressman and his constituents

Last week my congresscritter, Trey Gowdy, held a public information session, which I attended. He is hard-core Tea Party. During the q&a I told him that SOPA was a mistake and should be stopped. He seemed to appreciate the problems with SOPA and gave a very similar reply to the one from the White House.

I think is is important that more people visibly communicate with their representatives that they are opposed to such laws, and that the people are closely watching Congress.

The really sad part was the reaction of the majority of the audience, average age estimated in the 60's. They either had no clue at all, or felt it was a good thing that the government was controlling the internet.

An elderly gentleman accosted me afterwards and said that he had been "hacked" and that if I were ever hacked I would support the government clamping down in the internet. I tried to explain SOPA to him, but it was a lost cause.

It won't matter.

Given the amoral, selfish and despicable behavior of politicans, it should be obvious by now we'll get SOPA with a different name and a new pretty bow. The only way to stop it is for EVERY SINGLE OPPONENT -- ISP, content provider, Google, Joe Smith's grandma -- to make their voices heard by implementing a serious effort for shut down the internet for 24 hours. That is the one and only thing that will stop them...for a while.

The worst danger isn't so much the passage of SOPA...it'll be congressional efforts to "fix it." The mess will look a lot like those duct-tape nightmares on the Cheezburger sites.

"Government's view of the economy (me: and now the internet) could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it."

Not really, the thing that stops Washington politicians is the threat of funding their Opponents' campaigns, and following through with that funding. Increase the difficulty of their reelection exponentially every election cycle, they work to make their districts "safe", and throw a wrench into those efforts. Target several of them each cycle, not all of them at once. Target a couple of the high profile politicians who push this crap. Make them fear losing their jobs for supporting this stuff.

2 words, ok 3, well maybe more.

Presidential Election Year.

He may have tried to run this country to the ground, but the democrat party isn't stupid enough to have this extremely unpopular bill go so far that it would add more fuel to the fire for people not to vote for him.

I'm not trying to turn this into politics, But a Bill such as SOPA, is politics. Considering it's widely unpopular with the voters, and it's a major election year.

I'm thinking this will come back in January of 2013, after the election is over, and the dust has settled. After all, the industries that support the bill have paid, my bad, donated money to re-election war chests.

I agree that politics is a huge part of this, but willful ignorance and the devil of RIAA/MPAA lobbyists (with cash and promises) is as well.

Obamacare was wildly unpopular with voters and it passed. As a result several congresscritters and senators have decided to "retire" because of the backlash. They knew it was unpopular and cut very toxic special deals that went public, and voted for it anyway. None of those ex-politicos are hurting for cash. Hmm - let's see

1. Repeal of DNDT
2. end the Iraq war and bring the troops home
3. Affordable Health Care act
4. Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009
5. Saved GM and Chrysler (part of keeping the economy from going completely off the cliff)
6. Higher gas mileage standards
7. Tougher environmental regulations for cleaner air and water
8. Found and took out Osama Bin-Laden + a great number of other high ranking terrorists
9. Attempted to kill of GITMO - congress wouldn't let him do it...
etc...

He is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination as is any other politician that has held the office, but he has come through on a number of his campaign promises so saying he has not is the height of willful blindness...

Those of you who have rapport with the younger, more internet population need to keep reminding them what these bills would take away.

One important note - I did not say anything about the popularity or how these things came to be; just that he made promises and regardless of how, he made good on them...

SOPA COULD be the greatest legislation ever

With a few minor little changes... Things like the CEO and President of any company found to either maliciously or in error cause the disruption of any website or service be jailed for a minimum 10 years for the first offense AND that the companies be civilly held to 1000 times the amount of damage suffered by anyone WITH of course the "victim" allowed to make up what their damage was and the value of it, just as the recording industry does today. These two little changes would make it a GREAT bill

Re: Myself

ICE basically steals the domain of the site which offends one of the parent corporations of the US government forcing DNS redirects to their little page claiming they had a justifiable right to steal domains.

Problem is the DOJ and ICE being government agencies are technologically inept and will always hit other domains at the same time. so if yours is totally legal you could still get taken offline.

If any of these laws get passed, I hope people have enough sense to just cancel their internet service and do without. Maybe that will teach the government and the corporations that backed the bills, that consumers mean business and we are tired of being lied to, told what to do, and seen as nothing but dollar signs.

Get rid of all of it

While we're at it, let's get rid of ALL copyright and trademark laws. Make everything free! That way no artist, musician, writer, actor, film company, producer, director and so on get paid for ANYTHING. What a wonderful world it would be. Imagine the multitudes of writers burning the midnight oil, slavishly working to write the next great American novel just to see it published around the world on the internet for all the world to see...for free! And he won't get a nickel for it! What a concept! Everyone will be doing it!

SOPA is about copyright infringement on the internet. SOPA has its heart in the right place but it needs more thought and more input from technology companies on how to handle it. The idea behind SOPA is sound.
