Comcast's CEO Roberts ambition is growing to worldwide level

Now that Comcast also owns NBC/U and CEO Roberts is hobnobbing with the world power structure at the Davos conference, his ambitions have expanded to making Comcast a corporate world power.

After four decades of snapping up U.S. cable companies, then acquiring the news-and-entertainment giant NBC Universal Inc. in 2011, Comcast Corp. is ready to take on the planet.

Whizzing through the Swiss Alps on Thursday afternoon on the road to the Zurich airport, America's cable-TV king, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, was having a globalization aha! moment after attending his first World Economic Forum in Davos.

The world, in Roberts' view, is getting smaller, and international sales could be one of Comcast's fastest-growing segments over the next five to 10 years. It won't come in the traditional Comcast way, through the acquisition of hard-line cable-TV systems.

More likely, it will happen through a reenergized NBCUniversal, whose international operations are based in London, which was on Roberts' itinerary last week.

Licensing entertainment overseas can be a growth business, Jayant said, but "the key question is how much of NBCU's original content can be exported and dubbed to a foreign language at a minimal cost for a high-margin return."

NBCUniversal International says its most widely distributed cable channels overseas are E!, Universal Channel, Style, and Syfy. Among its most popular shows are Law & Order, Grimm, Covert Affairs, and Suits. Its library contains 4,000 movies and 75,000 TV episodes.

Though it was Roberts' first time at Davos, a high-powered gathering of political leaders, CEOs, and philanthropists that began Wednesday and ends Sunday, the trip was his second on the global business stage in eight months.

In June, he traveled into Lausanne, Switzerland, with a scrum of NBC executives to bid - successfully - on the U.S. broadcast rights for the Olympics. Comcast/NBCUniversal won those rights through 2020 for more than $4 billion, beating sports giant ESPN, owned by Disney, and News Corp.'s Fox Sports.

positive reviews, bought and sold

quote:
By last week, 310 out of 335 reviews of VIP Deals’ Vipertek brand premium slim black leather case folio cover were five stars and nearly all the rest were four stars. The acclaim seemed authentic, barring the occasional indiscretion. “I would have done 4 stars instead of 5 without the deal,” one man bluntly wrote.

VIP Deals, which specializes in leather tablet cases and stun guns, denied it was quietly offering the deals. “You are totally off base,” a representative named Monica wrote in an e-mail.

But three customers said in interviews that the offer was straightforward. Searching for a protective case for their new Kindle Fire, they came upon the VIP page selling a cover for under $10 plus shipping (the official list price was $59.99). When the package arrived it included a letter extending an invitation “to write a product review for the Amazon community.”

“In return for writing the review, we will refund your order so you will have received the product for free,” it said.

Anne Marie Logan, a Georgia pharmacist, was suspicious. “I was like, ‘Is this for real?’ ” she said. “But they credited my account. You think it’s unethical?” While the letter did not specifically demand a five-star review, it broadly hinted. “We strive to earn 100 percent perfect ‘FIVE-STAR’ scores from you!” it said.

Re: positive reviews, bought and sold

Bought a new car from a dealer. Before you even get a final price they(salesperson, sales mgr, etc) are telling you to give them an excellent rating across the board when the mfgr sends out a survey so the manufacturer will reward them. Tell them yes, and they are dropping the price as we were still negotiating. You could double cross them later. So what is ethical? Especially if you plan on going to that dealer for after sale service.

Re: positive reviews, bought and sold

Do as you wish. However, I would rethink going to the dealer for after sales service. I have found that my local independent garage that I frequent does as good work and a lot faster than dealers.

I had several issues with the local Ford dealer concerning a warranty issue with a battery. They kept the vehicle all day to replace the battery, which was obviously defective (would not charge to a full charge and indications were that the battery had a shorted cell). My daughter took her car into the dealer for a simple sensor (O2, I believe), 2 days later we got it back.

I have found that dealers do not have the staff to handle the normal day to day business and have absolutely no problem with holding your vehicle for 2 or 3 days before fixing it. The only exception to not using the dealer is warranty work. Otherwise, oil changes, filter changes, etc. I don't go to the dealer.

Here is a better question... well ok 2 questions

Is the dealer being ethical when they offer to lower the price for a (possibly) skewed survey?

and

Is there some standard that says you should still be ethical with an unethical (or 'aethical') business?
