Re: Require DOCSIS 3 modem?

I highly doubt Oceanic would have all their subscribers turn in their modems for a DOCSIS 3.0 compatible modem. Most subscribers here are still on DOCSIS 1.1, so it would be a nightmare to force everyone to switch all at once.

Oceanic is buying solely DOCSIS 3.0 modems from now on. I believe they'll replace these modems whenever subscribers upgrade, etc.

check prices in France, England, Germany, Finland.

packages include cable TV channels and are between 26 Euros and 37 Euros per month. You can get up to 99 Mbps on non-peak hours for around 37 Euros. Much cheaper and faster than any company in the U.S.

I guess Acme has finally won.

Correction. Wiley Coyote has finally won. Acme was winning even when Wiley was losing because they were making money just selling to him. Acme may have more trouble now since Wiley has nothing to chase.

I read an article once that claimed that Acme was founded by Wiley (Head of R&D) and Road Runner (the Money Man). After Wiley had a nervous break down and attacked RR, RR allowed him to keep attacking to keep Wiley at work with new devices. That explains why Wiley can afford all the gimmicks - He is a co-owner of Acme.

Bulk Rate Price Change

I live in a Coop with Bulk Rate Pricing.

I wonder how my rate will change after my first year is up.
I think I just get $10 off whatever the current price will be.

Does anyone else know how this will work?

$42.95 for 3/1?

$42.95 for 3/1? Gee I save $10.12 a month by having DSL Extreme instead as they bill Me for $32.83 a month for 3M/768K, but only if Yer in an AT&T or Verizon area and only if one has Dry Loop as I do.

We are on DOCSIS 1.1 and ONLY 30/5 and 50/5 needs the DOCSIS 3 modem. So, TWC is going to tell Oceanic to throw away all the modems in the field because almost none of them can be flashed to support DOCSIS 3? That's nuts.

Re: What cable modem?

Depends on what market you are in. So far the only docsis 3 modems that are offered in the California / mountain west markets are the sbg6580 and tg852g, both have built in wireless.

Even if you get a modem that is wireless enabled, you can bridge it and use your own router and should be fine.

No Big Surprise

This has actually been in the works for years. Prior to TWC's split from Time Warner. Eventually TWC will ditch the "Cable" title as well. TWC wants to change their name all together but its become such a common place that all of corporate management has mixed feelings about it. Either way, eventually TWC will ditch is "former image" completely. Step one was separating from Time Warner. Next was their new "eye/ear" logo. It will happen. It's always been apart of their plan

They make no effort (at least in my area) to ensure that backup power is available to their nodes and repeaters in the field. Nor could they provide a satisfactory answer for why they were unable to deploy generators even after the flood waters had receded;

Here, they have batteries for short term outages. I assume this is the same across Maine as I see the battery cabinets all around my travels.

They are not selling the phone service to be carrier class, to compete with Verizon (or any POTS service). Carrier class means 99.9%+ uptime. Under normal circumstances things work great but the reliability just isnt there for cable for them to try and achieve legit phone service.

Actually phone service from the telco is supposed to be 5-9 service.. 99.999% uptime. I was working for Lucent upgrading their main phone switch computer to a new model and we had to upgrade whole parts of the switch... The switch being redundant, allowed us to shutdown the redundant side and put the new stuff in... well my uncle and his supervisor were drunk and messed up the wiring, and when they cut over to the new stuff, the phone system for all of NW Indiana went down... this was a Friday night at 1am... no 911, many cell towers that had trunk lines to our main office were out... It took 6 hours to get it cut back over to the side of the equipment that had not been upgraded...

It didn't take long for the FCC to show up. It was a major issue and I kid you not, I swear money changed hands and the officially documented length of the outage was 20 minutes... so the Telco could claim they still had their five 9's capability...

This was back in 96-97 and DSL in that area was just coming out.. we were putting in special switches to handle DSL and ISDN and support for T1's, T3's and so on... There were a few large businesses that wanted OC-48's and those actually ate up a switch each.

If you ever have been in a telco office with switches, the batteries are the best thing to look at, they literally look like they are out of the 40's... -48VDC...

Re: TWC Says Prices in Article Are Wrong

I'm only paying $19.95 monthly for their extreme 30/5 internet in WI. That's the TOTAL charge for ALL internet services, not an "Extra". Of course, I have the 2x2 bundle.

I don't work for TWC. I'm just a happy TWC customer.

I'm currently paying $49.95 plus tax/fees (my bill is $52.45/month) in northeast WI for Extreme (30/5) service.

It's $20.00 more if I wanted to upgrade to the 50/5 service.

I can't believe how much prices vary from market to market...

SpeedTest
Yeah, I think I got the 30/5 for only $19.95 because of my bundle. I pay > $210.00 monthly for everything. Now this seems to be expensive, but I have 2 Explorer 8300HDC DVR's, and 1 normal box. I also have the Docsis 3 modem, and TWC installed a signal repeater/amplifier on the main input line, in my basement. I don't have ANY "caps" on my usage. I get consistently good speed tests of 30.76 download speed, and 5.03 upload. I don't use their modem for wireless. I have 2 Linksys routers that I use throughout my 3 story house for the wireless.

The one, and only problem I encounter, is with the Explorer DVR. While taping 1 program, if I want to watch another program I have taped, the Fast Forward/Rewind buttons are finicky. They don't always respond to the commands, and then suddenly they do. I have a feeling it's due to the crappy drive on the DVR, and the drive speed.

I've tried other "providers" and they didn't, well.... PROVIDE!

For me, TWC is the best solution in my area. FIOS ain't an option at my address.
