 | This should have been killed long ago The part that makes no sense is why the FBI kept this illegitimate online at all. They should have immediately shut the dns servers down. Yes, millions would have lost "functioning" internet, but those same millions would have also received a hard lesson in basic computer security & owner responsibility.
Now, we have those same millions of users who are still none the wiser. They will keep ignoring AV updates, installing freeware, and being generally irresponsible.
The dns servers were illegal. They should have been shut down immediately. There was no need for these to stay online. |
|
 | On another note .... why was the government able to keep these servers online, which were 100% illegal, yet they had to shut down megaupload.com immediately? |
|
 | Takes 10 sec to bypass It takes about 10-15 sec to bypass and get back online. So good luck to FBI. |

I hope the remaining losers suffer a hard lesson on Monday as their internet access stops. Their ISPs will be getting calls to fix them. I hope the fix involves a costly visit to fix their PCs. Maybe they will learn something if they have to pay for it. -- »www.mittromney.com/s/repeal-and-···bamacare »www.mittromney.com/issues/health-care |

So good luck to FBI. to us that know computers, yes, DNS changer was more of a nuisance in its heyday than a threat. For those who dont know computers, or didnt care because their internet still "worked", they are about to get slapped in the face. Seriously, with Fortune500 companies still suffering from infections this long after, it really shows incompetence. The FBI should have shut them down after 1 week, and set a warning up that week so as to tell everyone that they were infected. Why the hell has my tax dollars been used to pay for illegitimate DNS servers? This is a waste, and should never have been done. |

Okay I know a home user might not know, but a fortune 500 not fixing it is just 100% pure lazy. If their IT department cannot fix it in the window they have had than they deserve to have a whole building lose internet. At the enterprise scale couldnt they have even in stages simply reimaged the infected machines if it would be faster than actually cleaning them? -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

Re: This should have been killed long ago said by CurGeorge8:On another note .... why was the government able to keep these servers online, which were 100% illegal, yet they had to shut down megaupload.com immediately? From the AP news story:
The problem began when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of more than 570,000 infected computers around the world. When the FBI went in to take down the hackers late last year, agents realized that if they turned off the malicious servers being used to control the computers, all the victims would lose their Internet service.
In a highly unusual move, the FBI set up a safety net. They brought in a private company to install two clean Internet servers to take over for the malicious servers so that people would not suddenly lose their Internet.
But that temporary system will be shut down at 12:01 a.m. EDT Monday, July 9. |

The responsibility is end users and their ISPs to resolve any connection issues. It's a damned if you do or damned if you dont kind of issue. If the FBI just pulled the plug, we would be hearing screams and gnashing of teeth that they should have notified everyone affected on an hourly basis, if they put up a saftey net to let the users get their act together, it's a my taxes and end users thing.
We all pretty much know that there are end users that will not take any responsibility or are not even aware that they have an issue until all of a sudden, they can't get to their favorite site on the interwebs.
Just let them pull the plug and let the chips fall where they may. |

Edit: I agree end users won't know and will complain, but don't they always? |
