Comments on news posted 2013-01-11 12:27:13: With the entertainment industry's oft-delayed "six strikes" anti-piracy plan finally very close to launch, some ISPs have been willing to talk a little about the new steps they'll be taking to thwart pirates on their networks. ..

Re: This is gonna blow up on their face...

Have you ever cracked a decent length, strong password WPA2 secured router? I didn't think so. It is hard to do. No, it is nearly impossible to do. If it is not a short, simple password, it is not going to happen.

If the character length is under 7-8 characters it can be cracked in a matter of days if not hours. There have been studies of companies whose password databases were leaked and conclusions drawn from the choice of passwords users selected. From that data it was shown that a large number, if not a majority, had short and sometimes embarrassingly easy passwords.

Yes, like I said long ago, good luck cracking MY 30+ character WPA2 w/ MAC filtering. If some loser is intelligent enough to break that, just to illgally download copyright, he should take his talents to the computer industry and get a JOB, so he can afford to not break the law.

IF this was to happen to me, after my first couple notices of violations, I guess Id then have to shutt down my wireless and go cat5. Really wouldnt be a big deal.

You're part of the under 5% who use passwords longer than 12 characters. The reason why this anti-piracy campaign will fail is because morons who can't make a wifi password other than "12345" or "password"(cat 5, wat iz dat?) are going to be the ones to complain the loudest when they get served piracy notices and their expensive 'Super Fast FIOS' is throttled at just above 56K speeds. Verizon will become overwhelmed with legal battles and ultimately will file it under 'fail'. You heard it here first lol

Ok so you do love the smell of your own farts... Gotcha..

Well then it must of sucked for you when netflix came about eh? Suddenly someone could have access to 100s if not 1000s of movies and tv shows all for $7 a month... Kinda makes your 2000 DVD collection a bit of a waste of space huh? Not mention a waste of money!

I always say that technology will continue to progress dragging those types kicking and screaming into the future whether they like it or not...they still have to right to complain however LOL

Re: Is this some kind of joke?

Actually I tried Netflix, I dropped it after a month because their HD content sucked, and their selection was very limited overall. From what I heard that was the fault of Starz, I dont know how their HD is now, and I dont care to find out. Oh, and Netflix doesnt have all the movies I own.

Have I voiced any opposition to Netflix? Keep to the subject of piracy.

Slight problem with your analogy... If you go to a theatre and the movies sold out and you sneak in.. Taking a paying customers seat from them then yes you ripped off the theater... If you go and sit in the movie and there are 50 seats free then in reality you didn't steal anything at all and may have actually made the theater some money if you bought a drink.

My analogy CLEARLY stated the theater wasn't full. An apparently you justified me breaking the law.

Re: Is this some kind of joke?

The Avengers was one of the most pirated movies last year and yet is the 3rd most successful film of all time. Hollywood had another record year last year actually.

Game of Thrones is one of the most pirated TV shows last year. It's also one of the highest rated TV shows on cable.

Radiohead is one of the most successful bands of the last 20 years and yet they released their last album for free online and only made it optional to pay whatever you wanted. They made a ton of money off of it and sold out their concerts.

Times are changing.. Unfortunately we have to drag the entertainment industry kicking and screaming into the 21st century as the consumers of the future are no longer willing to be ripped off by the Producers of movies, music and TV. There was a time all we could do is sit back and take it up the butt.. But we no longer have to. HBO creating HBO Go is proof they're slowly moving the way we want them to and Netflix proved that if you offer content at a reasonable price people will pay (I subscribe). If you want to continue paying what you pay for Blu-rays and CD's then all the power to you, just don't bitch at me when I don't.

I'm pretty sure that Wal-Mart loses more money from employee theft than any other company in the US and yet is still one of the most successful companies. Therefor using your logic it's ok for employees to steal.

But that would require me to be stealing.. I'm not stealing.. I'm copying. If those employees went home and made their own toothbrush that looked and worked like Walmarts then we'd be in the same ballpark.

So they either stopped or got smart? LOL

Perfect - it'll clearly prove that we need to regulate it...

...and reclassify internet as a utility, coming down hard on the non-competitive, quasi-monopolistic practices of cablecorps, telecom providers etc.

TWC, Verzion, Comcast, AT&T etc - they all itching for a big fuckin spanking, it's about time to give'em hell so let's just kick in the balls this slimebag Genachowski and get him to work for his paycheck...

It doesnt matter one bit. My conclusive evidence that ONE CUSTOMER "cut the cord" directly because of pirating proves my statement that piracy erodes profits for the MSO's.

So how much profit erosion am I causing by not paying for cable/satellite service? And do beware of your assumptions.

... nothing to worry about if people follow the laws.

AT&T (and their predecessor, SBC) are not exactly known for accurate billing. If their identification of infringer IP addresses is similar to what my mother went through with SBC billing about eight years back, I'd be foolish to not worry. Following the law is no guaranty that they will be accurate, or correct, in identifying putative infringers.

How about speeding tickets. I get a ticket saying I MUST pay and yet I have even been to court to prove my innocence. The cop is being judge and jury and handing out sentence.

You really don't understand that system, do you. You don't have to pay unless you don't want to contest the allegation of violation. There is no fee to enter a "not guilty" plea before a judge.
