A word about X1 in Atlanta

While it is true that X1 is available in the Atlanta market, to get it, you are *required* to have the triple play package (including phone).

They aren't even making it available to cable/internet (only) customers, which have to represent the lions share of customers down here.

So it's a bit of an overstatement to say that X1 is being "well received", because a lot of us who want it can't get it.

UX catch up

Just about anything trumps the guide on the current models. Talk about aged technology. The new revision HD STBs they have now are small, attractive machines, but damn that UI is just bad.

No kidding, I've been using my iPad with the Xfinity app to browse the channel listings and On Demand content.

The X1 is still loaded with bugs. The Comcast forum is full of unhapppy users that would rather go back to the older boxes and ditch the X1.

Re: A word about X1 in Atlanta

I have the triple play but it is not available in this area yet. I just had the AnyRoom DVR installed a few weeks ago. I have the Triple Play premier.

I like having a home phone as I have an alarm system and I can call 911 without having to give dispatchers my location or having the call answered by the state police and having to get transferred to local dispatch. I also like not having calls drop after waiting an hour on hold to talk to an agent.

Comcrap

It's ridiculous that they're forcing a completely irrelevant product like phone service to have this pathetic set-top box.

Also, isn't it interesting what a little competition can do? I'm sure Chattanooga isn't on this list without EPB.

Comcast should try and actually add some HD channels, and better yet, stop deleting them.

Well sure, any new thing is bound to. The point of course is that they're at least trying to make some progress in that area (like I guess they tried to do with the Tivo thing), but have thus far been extremely slow to do so.

All service provider dvrs suck, and from what I've seen on my FiOS boxes, the app stuff just makes them more buggy. Don't get your hopes up that a new revision will be any better.

I use the FiOS app on my iPad to schedule recording and sometimes even as a remote, when I'm not sure what I want to watch, because the boxes can be laggy and buggy.o

I think they'd be better off if they stuck to core dvr functionality
TV listings, DVR recording, Whole Home Dvr. and maybe a good suggestion system.

The apps never get used, and most of the time when my box starts to lag, it's because some app banner is trying to load, or I hit the app button by mistake. They try to do too much on these boxes without even asking if anyone wants or would use the functionality.

piece of garbage

"well received" is far fetched.

Most do not like this dvr as it seems Comcast focused more on the guide/software than the basic dvr features.

Should have at least made sure x1 had all the basic functions the current models have before focusing on "new features".

No tuner swap so you can not switch back and forth when watching sports or something is just one issue.

Re: UX catch up

I don't care about any apps, but I'm coming from FiOS with a 3rd-party Moxi HD DVR unit and the latest FiOS Motorola 7232-P2 DVR with the HD guide.

Stepping back to Comcast's offerings has been a huge disappointment. Any update would be welcomed.

This is exactly how I use the Xfinity iPad app. Faster response, I can filter the searches more intuitively, and it allows me to see more details with regards to program information. The iPad as a remote is wonderful.

good grief

So that means I wont be getting an X1 as I pay even more for business class internet and phone at my house and can't get the TV part of business class triple play as I don't live in a commercial building.

Adding qualifying rules to these devices is silly.

Why ? Why are we supposed to accept bad as normal something that is not developed properly, tested and then released to market ?

Don't accept it. Stick with the old tech if you're so inclined.

Not to worry, I will. My older Comcast boxes work fine, the newer ones always need to do an update, reboot without giving you a choice when to schedule the awesome useless updates and take FOREVER to become operational after a power loss. I have now UPS' on both of them to prevent this "customer enhancing experience".

45 minutes is an average between a power loss and being able to watch TV on these wonders of technology. Why should one be able to watch TV on a channel that you already know rather than the box needing to update the stupid guide for the prayer channel, 20 shoplifting channels, 100 Chinese ones and so on.

My only question is....

What is the Skype up charge for?

I guess I dont understand the reasoning behind enabling an application and charging $120 a year for it.

the charge is for leasing the HD camera and equipment to allow it to use HDMI connection, it will overlay with the guide and you can have the tv running while using skype on same screen. Skype is as you stated free, but the charge isnt for skype it is for equipment to intergrate with the box/services.

Re: UX catch up

I don't know anything about Comcast's STBs. Rather my point was if you don't want to access new technology, regardless what it is, because of potential bugs, then you have a choice. Suggesting that others shouldn't be willing to take on new tech is shortsighted and purely a personal preference. Some people want and like new features and are willing to deal with the challenges that go with them, others are not.
