Comments on news posted 2013-01-17 08:21:11: AT&T has historically focused on acquisitions and growth before all else, and is now unsurprisingly extending those ambitions into Europe. ..

British Telecom or Orange?

From what I've seen and heard of BT on-line, ISTM the thing that calls itself "AT&T" these days and BT would be a great match. Or perhaps Orange (France Telecom) would be a good match? They're pretty much universally reviled, too, near as I've been able to tell.

AT&T already defaults to Orange in the UK and France when roaming.

Just start telling everybody the "A" stands for "Abysmal," "Atrocious," "Appalling" or the like. Then maybe they won't be associated with America

Re: British Telecom or Orange?

I don't believe it. The fact that none of our telecommunications providers have expanded globally illustrates that they are milking this nation dry.

With every day, the American economy becomes smaller and smaller on a global scale, yet most of our monopolies couldn't spell international unless it came to saving a dime on labor costs.

Re: Uh oh.....

Orange is renowned for being as incompetent as AT&T but not as expensive though.

I can just see the AT&T board being like what do you mean you have a gov authority that looks out for the interests of the consume. Whereas, we have freedom yall freedom to rip anyone off and an entire army of RWers that will defend us no matter what.

Re: Europe

I would think it would make them associate it with America, especially when it comes to the new Americanized rates they'd try to charge users in Europe.

Expanding in Europe to grow profits?

I'm no economist, but Europe isn't exactly a growth market. If AT&T wants to grow profits year after year, they should be looking to China or Africa, not Europe. This seems extremely unwise and short-sighted, but, then again, so does everything AT&T does.

Not only that but buying I mean dealing with politicians is a much more advanced game in Europe and I doubt that AT&T understands the unspoken European rules.

Everyone that's ranting in this thread seem to be under the impression that T doesn't already conduct business in Europe (and a lot of the rest of the world). AT&T is a global company. Any acquisition will only increase the depth of the company's reach, not expand the reach into new grounds.

Landline

Why are they giving up? They could be a massive powerhouse if they wired their entire footprint, and even overbuilt other incumbent carriers with GPON fiber.

Wiring their entire footprint with fiber optics (not necessarily GPON) would require a logical long term perspective. Of course if our federal government had any balls it would tell AT&T, Verizon, and CenturyLink that they would only be allowed to get rid of the public switched telephone network if they replaced it with fiber to the premises.

True. That actually is a good idea. It puts a good incentive in there for AT&T.

Just say NO!

If Europe knows what's best for them, they would stop any AT&T plan to acquire one of their own. For the last 4 years, AT&T has ranked bottom in over all customer statisfaction. Not sure what the folks in the UK and the EU would gain from an AT&T acquisition other than deteriorating service quality and layoffs.
