| Follow the leader So, Mozilla is going with a 'me too' approach.
Well, Firefox makes for a great browser on a normal PC, but as its own OS - no thanks.
They don't necessarily have web-apps; they have extensions, but these aren't the same thing. If they do make a web-apps platform, what is to stop it from becoming a glorified bookmark shop (as with most items on the Chrome Web Store)?
Again, web-apps have already been done, and I think 'follow the leader' approaches will not help anyone - sure, those who like Mozilla Firefox as a browser more than me will jump at this, if they don't like the idea of Google getting all their data, but why should Mozilla be any different in this regard?
In fact, I believe we'll see a shift in Mozilla Foundation towards more data collection if or when this 'Firefox OS' takes off - and then we'll really have Chrome OS 2.0. |

| Doesn't matter if mozilla starts collecting user data (they already are and it will increase more in the future). Derivative projects will take after it and change that. Like how we have Comodo Dragon and Pale Moon.
Because, you know, competition gives users more options.

I think it looks like iOS / iPod touch, 5th gen. 
However, the point is an open API for webapps, and the whole spec built on top of HTML5 et al. |

0. Would they be able to bring the unsubsidized hardware price below 299$ / 349$ -- the cost of Nexus from Google?
1. Not sure how good T-Mobile USA 1900MHz coverage is, but I think it might have been nice to have AWS band included in the UMTS list of supported frequencies. Otherwise, you might be stuck with unlimited plans from third-party providers, and won't be able to jump onto the 30$ unlimited data plan from T-Mo. |

| Yeah I second that... don't quite understand the reasoning behind not only leaving out 1700 MHz AWS, but 850 MHz PCS from the 3G chipset support... that effectively leaves out the entire North American developer market, which is one of the most important ones out there... I suppose a developer will likely just tether the device to an existing hotspot/phone with 3G, but still, considering pentaband 3.5G modules are included in almost every recent Nokia handset, it really doesn't make sense to leave out this sort of feature when 3G is a fairly mature and standardized technology worldwide, and the incremental cost of adding support for those two extra bands isn't all that high compared to the marginal benefit.

Re: what's the point? Isn't Android open source and licensed in a manner that's free for anyone to do with as they please?
If so, I think they can copy the darn thing down to the last pixel and it shouldn't be an issue.
Of course Apple still doesn't like Android and they have ongoing litigation against both the hardware and software. (For instance, rubber-band effect at the end of a scroll -- thankfully this patent was found to be invalid but I think others are pending.)
I think Microsoft also has some hardware makers who use Android paying license fees for something. However, I think Motorola (Google) continues to fight paying license fees to Microsoft. |
