cahiattPremium join:2001-03-21 Smyrna, GA | This will be interesting.... 1) For OnStar users within major metro areas where AT&T has good (subject to debate) coverage the only issue I wonder about are any of the existing vehicles capable of switching over to AT&T? GM left a bunch of 04 and older vehicle owners with non-functioning OnStar due to a change in the past. Did they have the foresight to make current systems GSM capable?
2) For OnStar users outside major metro areas where AT&T has most likely crap coverage. These are the users that may actually need emergency services. They may be in an area with little or no traffic for assistance from passing motorist, nearly out of gas and trying to find a close (and open) gas station or other scenarios. What happens when these folks not have no coverage when they did before under Verizon. |

Or you are driving kids somewhere and the streaming video in the back keeps crapping out, making for a wonderful trip.
On top of that I wonder if the pre-recorded something like this into the car: "The system has detected airbag deployment. Unfortunately since you've traveled outside of AT&T LTE coverage area, this information was not transmitted to OnStar and no help will be dispatched. Thank you for choosing GM and AT&T. If you survive this accident we sincerely hope you recommend us to all your friends" |

 | so if you are in the usa and drive into Canada $10+ a meg so if you are in the usa and drive into Canada who is billed the $10+ a meg? |

kaila join:2000-10-11 Lincolnshire, IL | This won't come cheap.... I'd imagine monthly subscription rates will fall around AT&T's current Data Connect plan ($50mo) with a lower data cap to cover OnStar service and any GM subsidy.
I'd much rather use the smartphone I already have to provide the WAN for an in-car network (sans OnStar, I know). |

 | I hope they use GSM and CDMA backup I live in a area with spotty AT&T coverage Verizon works the best no drop calls etc, but when I get to the middle of nowhere AT&T says "Searching" hope onstar doesn't do that. |

| ATT sucks Seeing that ATT service is sketchy at best here in rural areas of Maine, (NOTHING native in northern Maine, and IF it roams it isn't even 3G) does that mean if I am in an area outside ATT that Onstar wouldn't work? Verizon covers most of the state in at least 3G with many areas now offering LTE. |
|
 | AT&T lte sucks Verizon definately has more LTE coverage than AT&T.
ONSTAR is nothing than spyware anyway. |

Re: This will be interesting.... It sounds like only 2015 and newer cars will use AT&T. Older cars will continue to use Verizon.
The 'change in the past' was the carrier's elimination of analog service, which many older cars used. |

 | What a horrible decision Guess I will never buy another GM vehicle. I am getting ready to trade in my 2011 GMC when the 2014 vehicles come out, even if this is affecting 2015 and future vehicles I will stop buying GM's now. I will be switching back to Ford. Ford quality is better anyways. -- Certs: CCNA, GPEN, GCIH, GCFW, GSEC, GCIA, GCFA, GCWN |

Re: This won't come cheap.... OnStar isn't cheap now, so it won't be too surprising if this comes in with a big price tag. If you want control over your vehicle's media system, much better to go aftermarket. It's not always as neat or seamless, but you can get what you want. |

Re: Is onstar used by many? Personally, I see this more of a global technology change than a 'AT&T is better than VZW'.
Why - VZW does have LTE 'and' CDMA to cover the vast majority of the country AT&T has GSM / UMTS / LTE to cover the majority of the country.
On a global scale - I suspect that GM is abandonning CDMA chipset completely for any new products. As VZW hasn't completed LTE, and GSM/UMTS is by far the largest footprint on the planet ( »www.4gamericas.org/index.cfm?fus···geid=565 ) moving to an all GSM/UMTS/LTE based deployment does make sense - even if it happens to end up on AT&T. |

| More OnStar BS. When the wireless carriers eliminated all analog service OnStar subscribers owning automobiles manufactured before a certain date had to have the OnStar circuit boards in there automobiles replaced by a local dealer with new boards at their expense. Who will pay to replace CDMA circuit boards with GSM compatible circuit boards? |
