Comments on news posted 2013-02-28 16:36:25: Just over a year ago, AT&T was busy trying to convince the press and regulators that if they weren't allowed to buy T-Mobile for $39 billion, they'd face an absolute spectrum catastrophe, would be unable to deploy next-generation wireless services, a.. ..

For the right price, they'll be whatever you want them to be. Im pretty sure they'll paint your house with pretty pink polka dots if you asked for it.

buying more

Looks like they are buying more. In northern Alabama AT&T is purchasing Corr Wireless from C Spire and the 700 mhz spectrum that C Spire owns in that area.

What a shame another small cell provider bites the dust.

Industry consolidation, due to efficiencies of scale, will always eventually cause a shakeout where all the smaller players are eaten up or pushed aside. Small players exist based on better, more personal, customer service. But most people now care less about good service, or at the least aren't willing to pay more for it. That is the WalMart phenomenon - low price & convenience is the only thing that matters to most people.

It looks like, nationally, absent a government regulated monopoly, it will shake out to 4 or 5 national carriers. That would be AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and the stealth national player Tracfone(the prepaid monster). Some smaller players will operate on the fringes(say MetroPCS) for awhile, but even they will eventually fold or be bought out.

I will be perfectly happy if the budget cuts specified in the Budget Control Act go into effect. 3 cheers for the sequester. Take the money from the drunken federal spenders.

Doing what they can

The T-Mobile deal would have been good for the US market, and would have allowed AT&T to offer a better service faster, more than doubling the capacity of their HSPA+ network, but unfortunately, government over-regulation killed it.

You forgot to mention that it would eliminate competition... which would hamper innovation and competitive pricing. Keep drinking the Koolaid!

A tier 2 carrier isn't competition for a tier 1 carrier. People who want good service won't go to a tier 2 carrier. Hence, they don't compete.

Re: buying more

They'll be enough prepaid carriers around where people don't have to lower themselves to the national carriers outright. Worst case scenario, I could live without a mobile phone...especially since I never got hooked into smartphones.

Re: Doing what they can

T-mobile has NEVER been innovative, and they certainly are not truely competing with ANYONE!
