Ah EA you never learn

Thank God that Nintendo didn't use them for their internet service. So now EA are you going to accept the fact that Nintendo was right in refusing your servers? LOL enjoy but i feel sorry for all the Sim city fans that have to suffer because of EA's shoddy servers.

RE

I like it, even if the server problems are causing headaches. You have to realize that this is where the industry is heading. They want to stream games to you or have you plugged into a server.

Re: RE

Yea im just going along with it too. This is happening fighting isnt going to fix it, if we want more games on our PC, than sadly we need to become a little more console like. ( in the ability and desire to pirate games way)

My take on the game

I haven't had any problems with the game. The download took about 20 min on a 30Mb connection on opening night 2am PST. The North American servers were busy, so I tried the Oceanic server and had not problems playing on there. My wireless connection dropped a few times on me and the game kept playing it did not just stop all of a sudden that most people are fearing. I have installed it on my Laptop and Desktop with no problems and I didn't have to pay for a 2nd license. I am not sure if you can run them both at the same time but its nice that you are able to move from pc to pc with it. The game play on the other hand needs some tweaks. When you start on a new server for the first time you are forced to go through the tutorial, while not time consuming it gets annoying after stating on the 3rd server or more. There was one glitch where I needed to force quit the game the auto save was about 2 min away, so I did not lose much data. The land plots are small, so if you are planning to put every possible thing in the city it will be very hard to do that. I managed to get a city of 135,000 last night and using dense everything and making every inch count and I have about 20% of the land left to expand. The other players are pretty nice they share their city services with you and its nice to have a place to dump your unwanted garbage and sewage on. The game still has its charms and the ability to make time vanish. Its an ok game just not worth $60 I managed to get it for $40.

SC5

I'm still playing SC4, heavily modded. I've had all the games from the original to SC4.
I've been following SC5 since the news broke on simtropolis.com
I was also a beta tester for SC5.
At beta, which wasn't too long ago, there were some glitches. Something tells me they didn't get corrected before release.

I've found two problems - online play, and price.

Most of the people who play these kinds of games really don't want to play with others. It's true!
The price is just a little to high. I'm willing to sit back and let the Early Adopters pay full price.

Re: SC5

I'm still playing SC 4 too, although probably with far less mods than you are.

The online play of SC 5 doesn't really appeal to me. Not one bit.

What happens when EA kills the Sim City Servers?

If I'm reading the article right, once EA decides to kill their servers (at their sole discretion) you have a bunch of digital bits that you can't do jack squat with.

EA killed off the online components of EA Active Sports 2, but I can (and do) still use the game off line to exercise with.

With this new version of Sim City players don't even have that option.

I almost got burned by Motor City Online back in the day, had my connection been better back then I would have coughed up the monthly fee after the beta and been burned when they shut the whole thing down.

Re: What happens when EA kills the Sim City Servers?

They will say they are shutting down the servers on XX date or will be unsupported on XX date but then for $25 dollars you can still play past the expired date! They will make you pay for it if you want to play it beyond their cut-off date.

I wonder

I wonder if EA will be looking for a new network admin, and if they'll be looking to spend the $$$$^2 to get a good network.

WTF

What else to say, this is an epic fail. Hopefully the game will be worth the initial pains. EA is just losing face, this isn't the year 2000.

On top of that the fact that your world is on a specific server, what crappy programming. They should have a front-end that dynamically loads your world from a clustered back-end so that you can run on any app server. Ohh, a nice consequence from that is that they can do maintenance on a per server basis and not take the entire world offline.

Origin is horrible and EA is going down the tubes, esp. when they ruin a classic game property.

cheetah speed

EA is now taking away core features of the game away. the latest patch has taken away cheetah speed. The third arrow is now the same speed as the second.

This has been what NOT to do on a game launch.

have 6 servers for millions of people.

Bought it, returned it

I played the beta, but the restricted everyone to 1 hour of gameplay like that is really going to test the server load. I bought through Amazon and leaving my 1 star review I contacted customer service explaining the issues and how if I had bought it from Maxis, I would have been disputing my charge by now. They were kind enough to let me return the game anyways and even paid shipping back. If you look at Amazon, the game is at 1.3 stars (1 being the lowest) out of 1000+ reviews.
