Call me crazy...

I won't even buy any game that requires online activation. Call me crazy, but when I buy a game, new or used, I expect to be able to play it for as long as I have a system capable of running it, not just until the company decides to stop supporting it.

The original Tomb Raider was released 16 years ago, but people still play it. Will you still be able to play today's games with online activation a decade from now? I doubt it.

I pay to buy games, not rent them.

Re: Call me crazy...

This unfortunately is the future. Every console manufacturer & developer wants this. They make nothing off used game sales. This is already in effect in PC gaming (Steam, Origin, Gamers Gate, etc). If it isn;t this generation of consoles it will be the next.
if the infrastructure was in place throughout the entire US. They would do away with optical drives as well and tie all your games to digital download so there would be no media to even return.

No not with games and consoles, the future can change quick. One box maker screws you and every one just switches to another, bam one box maker has to reconsider or get out of the market. The gaming market is ruthless here today gone tomorrow consoles have failed in the past big time and were never heard from again.

You guys are missing one Important Item.

I just saw this and have not read threw all the comments, however if Microsoft blocks the sale of used games I can almost guarantee you a lot of developers are going to be making their Big Titles on Xbox, or at the very least give them a lot more times exclusives. The developers and publishers don't make any money on used game sales and if they were to release the latest Call of Duty on the newest xbox exclusive for blah blah blah months I can almost guarantee you the game would still sell threw the roof, especially since used games of newer titles you only save a few bucks. They do not care if people who only buy used games get angry, because they don't make money off of them anyway.
And SONY is kind of backing away from their statements that they would not block used games.

Then let them do that and when people don't buy the consoles, the games won't sell.

Game reviewers don't need a magazine dependent on ads to write reviews so they can say anything they want and if enough give bad reviews to a console, it might not sell well enough. Same goes for games that don't play well or are boring.

Also, there are enough parents that buy these consoles still and many are from the generation where used games were an issue. In my time, kids having an Atari 2600 with a ton of games just didn't get another console unless it could play the old ones (Intellivison and Colecovision both had 2600 emulators.) Even if adults buy a lot of these games, lots of kids still play too and mommy and daddy still buy the games for them. At $60 a game, used becomes quite attractive.

Dont know about the 360 yet

But what I do know is that the PS4 will NOT be backward compatible. It will use cloud gaming to use the old games.

Link: »kotaku.com/5986120/everything-we···tag=sony

Its about halfway down the page. Tells all the specs on it from Sony themselves.

So the vicious rumor that the 360 will not allow used games is just that. A RUMOR. So until anyone can provide accurate evidence DIRECTLY from M$, then its all up in the air as to what will or will not be playable from them.

I would like to believe that M$ isnt that stupid. Taking games over to a friends house to do some split screen? Not going to happen. So why would they shoot themselves in the foot? Doesnt make sense even from a business standpoint. But I have been wrong before. Many times even.

the hidden agenda

It's not just about piracy. It's an attempt to force ppl to stop selling games that require just an install and no connection. It's an attempt to turn single player games into an online game, to force sales.

Dumbest move ever. Gamers are already steaming over these issues with STEAM.

seriously???

ban used games??? It's bad enough to require "online passes" so that multiplayer on rentals is essentially useless. But, now, you expect everyone to pay full price for a possibly shitty game???

Even more reason to stick with Sony. I haven't touched my xbox 360 in over a year, in favor of my PS3. Seems I won't have to worry about buying the new model, either.

Here's why Microsoft WILL do this

Sell the game to somebody else in contravention of a shrink-wrap commercial license and you become a criminal.......

Fixing the Worst Law in Technology

".... Both private litigants and the Justice Department began to use the law against not only hackers but also otherwise legitimate users who violate the “terms of service” policies that come with nearly ever piece of software and service we use on computers today.

What are terms of service? Remember the last time you signed up for a Web site and clicked through several pages of fine print? Yep, that was it. Chances are, you didn’t read it, and didn’t think that it might be a federal felony to violate the provisions that it contained. The Justice Department has repeatedly taken the position that such violations are felonies.

.... Dating sites, to borrow an example from Judge Alex Kozinski, usually mandate that you tell the truth, making lying about your age and weight technically a crime. Or consider employer restrictions on computers that ban personal usage, like checking ESPN or online shopping. The Justice Department’s interpretation makes the American desk-worker a felon."

"....Say I run a business and I have information about products on my website; I then set up a Term of Use saying that no competitors are allowed to visit my website. As I read the Leahy proposal, it is still a CFAA violation if the competitor violates the Term of Use. After all, the competitor violated the Term of Use and then obtained “commercial business information,” that is, information about the company’s products."

Senator Leahy is fixin' to add asset forfeitures to the penalties too.

Bye XBOX and PS4 and Hello sexy WiiU

This will only help Nintendo in the long run. Since those two are only into make money over gamers sake. The WiiU is backward compatible and you save since you don't need to buy a new controller but the Wiimotes. Thanks Sony and MS you are making it easier to stick to my WiiU.

Out growing these things

I'm so glad my kids are getting too old for these money pits. I have the xbox 360, ps3, wii, ps2, DS, Vita. Did I miss any? I've informed them right after I heard about the PS4 that there will be NO MORE video game systems under the xmas tree or in bday bags. Keep the current systems alive because when the game pool dries up, that's the end of gamming as they know it. Sony and Microsoft have done nothing but gone to crap since they stopped drug testing.

leaks are game theory

MSFT is leaking this information on the used game kill so that Sony gets the hint and implements it as well. sony then needs to "leak" info on killing used games. they have to collaborate on this issue in order to implement it. if one implements and other doesn't then the implementer is screwed so it wouldn't do it. only if both do it can they succeed in killing used games. in the end, i think killing used games is a good idea because it means that people who can afford new games, like myself, will have more titles and better titles to choose from....since now there will be more money going to the msft and the publishers, thus creating a much healthier game environment.

If a constant connection will be required then they will effectively be pushing the rural labeled folks out the door.. Being we are capped and over priced.. Who in the hell wants an xbox passively eating up bytes?

Don't care what it is, if its connected it will transmit something.. You notice this more on a slower 3g network than your fiber/cable connections most seem to have..

Power of FUD

Reading the actual "leaked information" doesn't leave me with the same conclusions that the rumors draw. Yes, all games will need to be installed on the hard drive, and some of them may "phone home" to some server for verification. There is no sign all games will be that way.

There are indications that many games will be designed to install and run after a very short process, with the rest of the game being downloaded and/or installed as you play (a lot of this can be done given modern propensities for long opening cut-scenes). Of course, if the game was downloaded this means the Internet will need to be accessible at all times. There will probably be an encouragement to keep the connection on at all times to download updates and such, but I doubt it will be required to play most games.

As for disallowing all used games, there is no actual evidence of this at all. This entire argument is based purely on speculation and assuming the worst of the companies involved. I will buy myself a hat and eat it if this is actually true... well not really but I'm pretty sure it won't happen.

Re: Power of FUD

Thank you for a level head response/comment.

This is all a bunch of hype to get people stirred up.

The console makers aren't going to kill used game sales.

What they will do is find more ways to continue to generate revenue after games are purchased (like with DLC for example).

just thinking more

If I buy a car brand new then sell it 2nd hand, I don't see GM or FORD demanding their cut of that sale, just the taxman. Same thing should apply to all used products. As purchasers we have rights to dispose of owned merchandise, regardless of what some shitty EULA might say. They really shouldn't be demanding new sales.

What does MS gain ....

... from shutting down resellers? Microsoft doesn't make most of the games we purchase. They provide the console and the Live service. How exactly does Microsoft benefit from preventing reselling games? Doesn't make any sense.

It's FUD till Microsoft say it itself

Should be No monthly fees

Microsoft charges enough for Xbox and games that there should be no Xbox live fee. Seriously the biggest rip off. Also they require you to pay Xbox live to use Internet explorer through Xbox. Don't I pay my ISP for that.

Military

On warships, the guys like to relax and play XBOX when they're not on duty. How are you supposed to play this if you're, say, underwater or in the middle of the ocean?

Or set up in some random place with no internet connection active?

Hard to get mad

When I love Steam but there are no used games on that platform and never have been.

What they do instead is have more sales and price reductions starting a few months after the games are released. I think in the end that model makes more sense as the money is going to the developers rather than back into someone else's pockets.

Re: Hard to get mad

If you tried this with college textbooks at full price, there would be riots in front of the dean's office. I have seen some subscriptions that last a semester for a fraction of the price of a conventional textbook, though.
