Comments on news posted 2013-04-01 08:24:07: Last year Cablevision employees in Brooklyn voted to unionize for the first time in the company's history, a significant move given the fact that just 2-4% of cable technicians are unionized. ..

Most likely not. Union techs are not contractors and they generally drive company owned trucks and are paid pretty well.

some common sense

as you can imagine gremlins are creeping into the system in Brooklyn resulting in service calls to happen. this is not as smart as paying employees slightly more and having the company split nodes properly & re-provision the network cheaper in the long run rather than have 12 service calls & truck rolls happen before they come to that conclusion. at a minimum CV can spare $1.75/hour more for entry level-- just make sure the truck rolls are justified first.

I was wondering.. when they bump your upstream from 22mhz to 32mhz does that mean they split a node because of overprovisioning, getting ready for docsis 3.1 or something else?

no, it means they raised it to a higher frequency because 22mhz is affected by noise much worse than 32 mhz is.

Yep - especially since the headline of the newewr article says:

"Cablevision brings back 22 employees who groused over stalled contract talks "

Re: some common sense

Hey I don't trust cablevision at all. Their execs get paid really well and the workers don't and those nice Exec's are bailing out then there's something really wrong with CV

Cost of living in NYC

$20,000/year in NYC isn't the same as it is in other areas of the country. If Cablevision is making a nice profit I think they should pay the employees that make it possible.

Re: some common sense

It could mean that, if everyone went from 22MHz to 32 MHz, but more likely it's just regular balancing that happens automatically.

Right you are Eddy!

Sweet revenge for those workers who were WRONGLY fired because they were exercising their union rights.

This isn't true of just CV but of so many businesses in general today.

These brASS tacks are rewarded with a king's ransom WHETHER THEY PERFORM OR NOT, while the rank and file are increasingly paid less and less for more work and are often fired "just because" even if they perform excellently .

More union lies

" poor or no health care and low wages" Is an absolute lie! Cablevision workers have much better healthcare than most people, especially most in the CWA.

The workers probably live in Newark, NJ

Entry level techs for Cablevision make much more than $20,000 a year.

Re: More union lies

need to understand a majority of truck rolls are handles by 3rd party contractors in NYC.. these are very lowly paid workers.. no benefits AFAIK-- work is paid by the hour or job depending on terms of employment.

nevertheless, $1.75 an hour or $5 a job more is not out of line moving into 2014 regardless if your check has a CV logo or something else.
