No worries...

When all the cumbersome connection requirements and DRM cause lukewarm sales, they will just blame piracy and cook up even more restrictive schemes!

And if I were a Microsoft Studios PR executive, that man would be fired on the spot. The point of PR is at least "acting" like you care about customer concerns.

Manditory Kinect, now Manditiory Internet Connection.

No Sale from this guy.

That's sad too cause I moved over to console gaming because upkeep on an up to date gaming rig was expensive.

However, I don't need to have a camera or internet to play games on a PC.

What about kids rooms?
What about people who still live in places without internet?
What happens in 10 years when they shut those Authentication servers down?

Why is it every time Microsoft is on top

They put their stupid cap on and pull shit like this? I WILL go to Sony if they pull this crap. Or maybe even Ouya.

Not yet, that is. There's nothing stopping any game manufacturer from requiring that your PC is connected while you play their game. I'm certainly not defending Microsoft's strategy but the same thing could happen to PC games.

The digital divide is coming to a game console near you

They'll alienate gamers who live in rural areas that are stuck on dial-up or rely on capped satellite or cellular connections.

There ARE people that don't have access to broadband.

I find ethical issues with used games where big retailers pocket the money and the developer/publisher does not receive any compensation from the sale of used games. I always buy my games new. Same with music, I believe the artists should receive compensation as bands like Green Day and Mumford & Sons don't work for free.

If they want an "always on" connection for copy protection, they should put a phone jack on the consoles as the only wired Internet for many is a phone line or sell an attachment that connects to a phone line. DirecTV understands the needs of rural users (as many of their customers live in the country) and my new Genie has both a phone connection and a broadband connection. They use this for content protection so if you have more than one receiver, they can make sure that both are at your house and the other one is not at a friend's house.

I've experienced ImOn (when they were McLeod USA), Mediacom, Comcast, and Time Warner and I currently have DirecTV. They are much better than broadcast TV.

I have not and will not cut the cord.

According to Consumerist: "Sony has already confirmed that its upcoming PS4 console will not require an Internet connection for basic operation."

Don't buy Ouya, lol. Or at least wait for more reviews, initial ones claim it is terrible.

Well if $ony does the same in PS4 (even though they claim they will not) this could push more people on to PC.

I will not shed a tear for any company that requires intrusive crap like this. I will be more than glad if EA, Blizz-Activision, Ubisoft and any other company that pushed these draconian DRM system to go out of business. They have lost touch with their customers when they started to gobble up companies left and right and turned into a typical monopoly minded corporations with mindless cookie-cutter games every year.

More smug than Apple at times.

More reason to avoid them like the cancer that they are.

It will never happen on PC, because one company doesn't control game access on the PC. Microsoft has the final say of what gets released for the console, not so for the PC. Every developer and publisher of every game would individually have to decide to make online drm mandatory. That will never happen as if this continues NOT requiring a connection will become a competitive advantage for some devs. Even if MS decided to somehow try to implement this on the PC there are other OSs that game developers and gamers would flock to. The PC is simply too open for this to happen across the board.

Re: meh?

They already said they wont, plus that would be an even worse business depression than MS doing it. Assuming MS already is. Because if they don't have it but MS does that will lead more costumers to them, if both of them have it nintendo may get more customers.

I don't disagree but how many sales will that cost them? If the loss of those sales is less than the advantages they hope to gain, they aren't going to care.

Does Genie have WiFi? If not, what if a customer has cut the cord and just uses cell for both voice and data? Even with WiFi, the customer would have to pay for cellular hot-spot. Unlikely? Perhaps but like Microsoft, the percentages aren't big enough for DirecTV to care.

don't you listen to game developers? Piracy only happens on pcs, it doesn't exist on consoles.

Not sure how one would even pirate the 720.

Regardless game devs do blame piracy for their own mess ups too much.

Re: Wasn't looking into an xbox...

combine this with the lackluster hardware that is going to be going inside the units and the fact that there is no way on gods green earth i will ever buy anything from sony, the end result is that steam will be getting all my gaming money from now on.

I was thinking the same thing. He needs an attitude adjustment. Nothing like a swift kick out the front door to help make those adjustments.

Re: Wasn't looking into an xbox...

I've been using Steam for years - and while I agree, it's nice to play a game while sitting on the couch in front of the big screen every now and then compared to a chair lol.

But eh, I'm not brand biased - I haven't owned a PS3 or Xbox in about 4 years. I've been waiting for these next gen consoles - I recently bought a Wii U. I base consoles based upon the potential games coming out.

Won't make the slightest impact in sales. Look at SimCity. Sold over one million in the first two weeks, breaking new records. Consumers will complain but at the end of the day, they will buy it anyway.

Re: The digital divide is coming to a game console near you

why should developers receive compensation for a used game?

that would be like a book publisher getting a cut every time I sell a book. Makes no sense. They already made their money on the initial sale, they have no right to make more on that individual item.
