Kids are stupid not because they can't get online...

...but because of someone's even lamer idea that we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings by failing them, holding them back a grade or grading their papers with red ink.

Flushing money down the toilet worried about broadband or how kids should have iPads and laptops is nonsense. You can learn English from a book. You can learn mathematics from a book. You can learn chemistry and biology from books; better yet from in class experiments. These kids just need to open the damn books and do the work and if they don't, they rot in that grade until they do it. And teachers need to stop being so lazy and actually teach like they used to instead of handing kids off to the publisher's prepackaged poopy. Then you wouldn't need e-books and all this other nonsense. For digital literacy, if it is such an issue, have a digital literacy class where the computer work is done in class, reinforced by reading at home.

Wi-Fi Is the New Ethernet

What idiot wrote that article? WiFi complements Ethernet, not replace it. Let's see you shove GigE through WiFi and have it not drop due to RF interference.

This person is also a bit clueless about WiFi in the Enterprise. Also, it's wireless.. which means anyone can listen in. You could utilize WPA2 with shifting keys along with an OpenVPN tunnel to keep corporate communications secure.

The teachers are lazy and just give the kids books is because they can only teach things that the state tells them to or they lose there job.

Re: Wi-Fi Is the New Ethernet

WI FI doesn't work for us because of the possibility of interception. WI FI is not allowed in the main corporate office, no Access Points etc, even cell phones are required to have their wifi turned off. I'm surprised they even let us have cell phones in the building, the camera's all have to have a sticker over the lens in order to bring it into the building.

Security does random sweeps of the buildings with Wi-Fi detectors.

In a high security environment Ethernet works best because you have to have physical access to the cabling to intercept the signals.

Re: Kids are stupid not because they can't get online...

Well then we don't need the teachers. Just give the kid the book and send them home. That is basically what is going on now except we are paying teachers (at least in California), $70,000 a year to do nothing for 8 months (given they get more vacation than anyone on the planet aside from the President). They just pass kids, graduate them with high school diplomas while being functionally illiterate. In NY 80% are ill-prepared for college work and in California 70-85% need remedial math and English work. What were teachers doing for those 12 years they had these kids? 1% sure. 5% perhaps; you have kids that slip through. But 70%? 80%? Teachers aren't teaching any more.

Forget the iPads, forget the student issued computers, forget the Internetz, forget all that nonsense and get back to basics. Open a book, teach what is in the book, enforce common core so that idiotic teachers can't waste time going off on mindless tangents. No $800 gadgets needed.
