BitTorrent can talk until it is blue in the faceCohen can deny it until the day he dies, but while bittorent is a protocol that can be used by legit services, it was designed for piracy and it is still the major use for the protocol. |

When I think about torrent files..I think : -pirate bay -demonoid -torrentfreak -torrentfreak vpn -hidemyass vpn -transmission (mac client) -monova -seedpeer -torrenthound ... Yup. Piracy.Pr0n.k3ygens.kracks.infected software... :P (I am sure there are plenty of legit uses, but the average user of torrents isn't on piratebay.se or other engine for latest linux distro) Remember, Sandvine is blocking you... Bittorrent will need to re-image itself. Netflix, well, Quixter anyone? |

Re: BitTorrent can talk until it is blue in the faceIf it was designed for piracy, why didn't Cohen start TPB? He didn't really cash in, and doesn't seem to have a political agenda, so if he is a pirate it must be on a deep subconscious level. |

Re: BitTorrent can talk until it is blue in the facesaid by TechnoGeek:said by FFH5: it was designed for piracy Proof please. Up until 2005 Cohen maintained links to illegal content on his site. Only then did he decide to go legit in order to get his product used for legal reasons. As many startups did he used illegal porn and illegal downloading(just like YouTube) to grow his business. » en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bram_CohenIn the summer of 2002, Cohen collected free pornography to lure beta testers to use the program.[3] BitTorrent gained its fame for its ability to quickly share large music and movie files online.
2005 Cohen and Navin made a deal with the MPAA to remove links to illegal content on the official BitTorrent website. |

said by ArrayList:I'd love to see evidence of this claim. » www.wired.com/entertainm ··· 06/68046 BitTorrent programmer Bram Cohen may be in legal jeopardy after the discovery on Wednesday of an old agenda buried on his website saying he creates programs to "commit digital piracy."
The polemic would have been of little interest a week ago. But on Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that the intent behind a file-sharing program can be a decisive factor in determining whether the creator can be sued for its users' copyright infringement.
Cohen said the agenda was written years before he started work on BitTorrent, and that it was written as a parody of other manifestos. {sure it was } » web.archive.org/web/2001 ··· nda.html I am a technological activist. I have a political agenda. I am in favor of basic human rights: to free speech, to use any information and technology, to purchase and use recreational drugs, to enjoy and purchase so-called 'vices', to be free of intruders, and to privacy.
I further my goals with technology. I build systems to disseminate information, commit digital piracy, synthesize drugs, maintain untrusted contacts, purchase anonymously, and secure machines and homes. I release my code and writings freely, and publish all of my ideas early to make them unpatentable.
Technology is not a panacea. I refuse to work on technology to track users, analyze usage patterns, watermark information, censor, detect drug use, or eavesdrop. I am not naive enough to think any of those technologies could enable a 'compromise'.
Despite my emphasis on technology, I do not view laws as inherently evil. My goals are political ones, even if my techniques are not. The only way to fundamentally succeed is by changing existing laws. If I rejected all help from the political arena I would inevitably fail. |

Re: BitTorrent can talk until it is blue in the faceThis is the equivalent of saying the inventor guns (10th century Chinese fire lances) intended on killing people so ALL gun owners intend to kill people.
Its just not true. Guns are a tool, just like bit torrent. The user is left with the decision of whether or not to do something illegal with it. |

You gotta be a pretty big idiot to get a virus or malware from a torrent these days. But I guess we all gotta talk out of our ass once and awhile about things we don't have a clue about. |

[This was written in late 1999, and is a parody of a cypherpunk's manifesto, which struck me as very dishonest manifesto claiming to solely be concerned about privacy. This screed is written in the exaggerated voice of a 'prototypical' cypherpunk, making much more direct declarations of his intent.] |
