Comments on news posted 2013-06-14 09:35:37: Elaborating on announcements made back in February, GM says that they'll soon bring AT&T LTE connectivity to most of their 2015 car models, with the broadband tied to the vehicle's OnStar infotainment and emergency aid services. ..

the new Onstar!

this will just be another vestigial tail in these cars that no one will use.

Yup.

Even were I inclined to pay for such a service, I would want it to be with the service provider I already have, not one that GM or anybody else chooses for me. (And that certainly wouldn't be the thing that calls itself "AT&T.")

In addition, my next car (which I expect to be in the market for next year) cannot have an infotainment system geared to a specific device e.g. iPhone.

The solution to a problem that no one asked for

GM thinking strikes again:

Instead of making it easier to integrate the device and operating system that your phone already has, GM says "let's create a brand new standard that will cost the consumer more money and causes more driver confusion when on the road"

There's a reason that I no longer drive GM products, decisions like this one are chief among them.

Of course this infestation won't be coming to Canada any time soon so I'm good

I sure that is just another NSA tracking system.

The last President of GM was the former top dog at AT&T.

On Star

If people will pay for On Star these days, they will pay for this. Obviosly there is a deal here... most likely AT&T pays GM to install it, probably even pays GM to install.

It's yet another way for AT&T to gouge their own customers. They could easily make a system to run off someone's smartphone connection. But they can charge twice as much for that.

Oh goody...

Another way for the NSA and other 3-letter agencies to track your every move. Your car will ping the cell towers and presto they know where you're driving. No thanks.

Of course if your cell phone is welded to your hip you're already being tracked.

No thanks

Chances are that any decent functions of this type of system will be disabled - at least for the driver - while the vehicle is in motion, making the system pointless for me 95%+ of the time.

I'll stick with my dashboard mounted Nexus 7, tethered to my smartphone, plugged into my vehicle's audio, running Netflix as I drive down the highway on long distance road trips.

I can't fathom paying to be spied upon in my vehicle.

Guess I'll never own any GM product new enough to have such crap, nor any other vehicle with such technology.

I know another guy who did Netflix in car. Scares the shit out of me to think of people playing video while driving, even if it's "only for the audio" - it's plain scary, unless you place the phone in a location that you can't possibly be distracted by it, such as face down.

If you consider that as spying then I'm guessing you don't own any type of cell phone.

Re: No thanks

I can see Netflix for back seat (kids, teens) but not on front dash.
I would like headsup weather and waze. And a dash/rear cam that can screengrab to Flicker and video up to YouTube account of the idiots in front and tailgaters behind.

!!!

Kill all development of infotainment system already. Slap a damn tablet into the console and give it vehicle controls. Holy !$#@-!.

No let's implement something that you can't have easily and charge you extra and later sell you another car with 1 out of the 90 other implementations you wanted for twice the price.

GO F-yourself GM.

Will this be an option or will it come as standard?

I have no use for all this gadgetry in a car that I use for running around town, and the occasional 2 hour trip to visit relatives, so I hope that it is an option so that I don't have to pay for it and never use it.

Stupid

OK besides the fact that more people are in fact Verizon customers. Why not make it carrier agnostic? Even if I was interested in this the fact I'm a customer of another carrier makes this "feature" useless. Just like when Sony decided on the genius idea to make PS Vitas only compatible with At&t.

Lol, yes, obviously cell phones are prime surveillance devices.. Thing is, I don't have to have it on me, its battery is removable, and thus far, I haven't seen any way to easily disable onstar in a similar manner.

Re: the new Onstar!

They have been doing this with onstar already, now they are just using the newest cell radios.

There are a lot of people that use onstar, it is very profitable for GM.
Just think you are probably average so 50% of the country is dumber than you and those are the people who would pay for onstar.

I dont drive GM products as they are not as reliable and as easy to work on as Toyotas or Hondas.
Who wants to remove the entire engine just to change the water pump???

Just one more reason

Well, this just added ANOTHER reason not to buy a GM product. (Like they needed one anyway). With all the CRAP they seem to be craming in our cars, I'm waiting for a small 500watt microwave to replace one of the 2 glove boxes in my minivan. Nothing like being able to pop some corn at the drive in (wait, we still have drive ins right?)

I don't know about the newer iterations, but I simply unplugged the Onstar module in my truck to install a BT module. Quick and easy couple of minutes under my dash and the simple task was done.
