Comments on news posted 2013-07-22 09:05:34: As we've been covering, the UK has been gearing up toward making porn filters enabled by default on every broadband connection, in the process ignoring the fact that such filters are usually easily bypassed, often filter completely unrelated content,.. ..

Poor guy

I can't help but feel sorry for someone who seems to spend almost all of his time thinking about porn. What a pitiful life he must lead.

Whatever view on porn, criminalizing 'use' or 'access' is where it becomes complicated.

how to block

so will the ISPs also be blocking proxies, VPNs and SSH tunnels to stop children from bypassing the filters?

the nightmare i see ahead is that a basic ISP connection will be highly filtered with limited port and protocol support. if you want more flexibility to run any traffic through the IP pipe you will have to subscribe to a special 'unrestricted' connection at a much higher price.

The war on...

...poverty.

...terrorism.

Add another failed war to the list.

How about a war on government waste and stupidity?

Will they learn from Australia

I thought Australia went through this already? How did that work out?

»www.theregister.co.uk/20 ··· tection/

»www.smh.com.au/news/tech ··· 605.html

To work, the filters would need to prevent users from asking search engines "How do I turn off these porn filters?" And then the question "How do I turn off the filters for questions about turning off filters?" And so on, for ever.

LOL; from a guardian newspaper article here:

Parents need to stop being lazy

What is the purpose of these filters other then to make it so parents do not have to baby sit their own kids.

Does the world really need auto filters enabled so you do not accidentally come across something that may offend you? in that case you should live in a bubble

Do not like porn? I have a easy solution do not pay attention to it aND STOP MAKING IT HARDER FOR OTHERS WHO WANT TO ENJOY SOMETHING THAT DOESNT OFFEND THEM BUT OFENDS YOU.

Seriously?

This reminds me of a Dilbet cartoon, where he was striving to write a program to block porn. A friend says, more or less, "You are going to match your programming skills against the hormones of millions of teenagers?" In the background the eyes of a kid testing the program go extremely wide.

So how about we classify some of the crap that the newspapers print as porn? Political speeches, religious rantings about birth control, hate speech, etc?

Stupidity!

This is what happens when elected IQ deficient idiots who have no idea how the internet works, try to make laws for the "public's good". They say "BAN PORN" to the ISPs and then don't realize that this is technically impossible the way the world wide web is currently structured. Then everyone laughs at them and life goes on.

It's still "War on Citizens" with a different front...

These political animals, while often technically illiterate, are not as stupid as we think them to be. They generally know bans do not work and that is not an impediment to their goals. Control is their goal, creating a new criminalization industry, new laws to hammer on people. Whether the filters work or not is irrelevant, what matters is the fallout and how to profit from that.

That is why the War on Drugs will not stop despite the fact it's a tremendous drain on the treasury, chews up lives far worse than the worst aspects of illicit drug consumption, utter failure in it's goals of reducing addiction and has laid the path to the installment of a panopticon police state - certain corporations and psychopathic individuals have profited very well from the War on Drugs. That is the goal, to create yet another parasitic industry that demands criminalization in order to exist.

who wastes his time on what someone else is doing in privacy that involves no law breaking. Hey clueless people, you aren't winning brownie points from your deity by forcing your views onto them. In fact, you make yourself look worse because you aren't fixing your own problems.

Have you ever actually tried to use an open proxy?

If you mean the web-based ones that promise anonymous browsing, they fail on almost any site that uses javascript, even when you uncheck the "Remove Scripts" options.

If you mean proxy servers where you enter the IP address and port number into the client's proxy setup, you spend more time looking for a working one than you do actually using it. Even then it usually fails for whatever purpose you originally wanted it for.

Maybe I'm just dumb, but not too long ago I tried to find a UK proxy to view a video on a UK TV site that was blocked for anyone not in the UK. I wasn't able to find a singe proxy (web based or direct) that would allow me to view the video.

Ooooh FILTERS!

I have a gold colored one in my coffee maker.

Every few years we seem to get some politico spouting off about the dangers, the horrors of porn. Apparently some concerned parent group that's too technically inept to take things into their own hands at home and filter access etc, need the ever present gov't nanny state to rise and save us from ourselves.

All this stuff's been tried before. Filters have gaping holes, or are over effective, filtering out non-porn content just because it can't figure out the difference, and using the pathetic "better safe than sorry" mantra.

Unfortunately this everyone's a suspect mentality is well & truly rooted in the US now as well and I am sure the next turn of the crank we'll see some self proclaimed "conservative" claim we need to shut down the smut again.

Ya know, free speech be damned & all. Just call it obscene and remove the protection.

I have used them, I often use them to view netflix content that is only available outside the us

There are lists of them available on the interwebs.

secure dns is not that easy to break. You just move on to one of the next on the list. Even if they block them all, you just point at a further upstream dns server.

Re: how to block

you capture all packets that are using port 53 udp, redirect those requests to your own dns. the isp doesn't have to modify the zones at all. they can simply redirect the destination of the packet.
