Mayor Bloomberg today announced new

Never one to miss out on an opportunity to get his face in the media spotlight Mayor 1% makes another shallow promise. When he made the deal with Google on the west side I bet he insisted on making sure Google didn't offer their free Wi-Fi anywhere else in the city other than right around their NYC location. Mayor 1% likes his billionaire friends and corporations (Verizon, AT&T, TWC) more than the tax paying, regular folk citizens this would help. Empty promise Mr Mayor. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. One last thing... Hopefully Mayor deBlasio does indeed reverse most of your "legacy". A soon to be elected Mayor who thinks about other people living in the city aside from his wealthy buddies....

underserved

How about the next mayor begin serving the underserved OUTSIDE of Manhattan. That's why the next mayor won't be a Manhattan/Wall Street insider.

Cable wifi is just about the only game in town when it comes to hotspots (and it's NOT free), forget the telcos- they want to sell data for as high a price as they can charge (typically $10+ a gigabyte). It also doesn't help if you put free wifi in places you wouldn't feel comfortable bringing your phones, tablets, and laptops while showing them in public.

Sounds Good

I'm fine with SF and NYC battling it out on who has more Wi-Fi spots. It is fantastic to see public WiFi spreading. The world is more and more connected and with caps on mobile data plans, many people are desperate to find WiFi. There is definitely a market for it and $0.99 per day is more than reasonable when you need it.
