| Sounds like.. Most ISP equipment. Each piece of equipment an ISP gives out, I find have some really nice strong points, but there is always something which makes it an undesirable piece of equipment to use. For example, the FiOS routers come packed with some nice power under the hood. Fast CPU, Gigabit (Rev. G, I), lots of RAM, and MoCa. The problem with them is with the low end wireless radio being used, and the firmware bugs. In my books, the ActionTec is worth around $60 with the hardware it has, and for how long it's been out.
But as someone else mentions, shut the Wi-Fi off and hook up your own AP/router (bridged, perhaps). Wireless N routers can be obtained for as little as $30 if it's only intended use is for Wireless, and perhaps as a switch.
Then again, if you use FiOS, why are you playing games with Wireless while expecting that Wireless N link to handle a 150Mbps connection? :P |
|
 | That sucks :( So, if I move again I get a crummy G router. Might as well save up for an AC router. |

Get an 802.11ac router and use that. |
|
 | Within their right to change pricing Slow news day?
This is hardly as evil as 95% of the other stuff carriers/providers do. They can charge whatever they want for their crummy router, I don't see a problem with this. |

Very few other providers even offer free routers so to attack Verizon for charging $20 more for N routers to customers with lower internet speed is pretty stupid.
Edit: Free N routers are provided for speeds greater then 100mbs |

 | What? I never got a new Rev I router when I upgraded to 75/35 speed a almost 2 years ago. The rep never mentioned it.
I have a F router, now.
Maybe when my plan is up, I can strike a deal to get it. |

| If FiOS ever comes If FiOS ever comes or I move to a location where it's available, I'll just run a piece of cat 5 to the ONT to where the router is located, finish it with a wall plate with Ethernet jack and hook up my Apple AirPort Extreme router directly to the ONT since that supports PPPoE networking.
If you can run a phone jack, you can install an Ethernet jack. |
|
 | That's all well and dandy, but their router provides the guide and other info tied into their video packages. When it went down I didn't have any OnDemand. My router isn't at the ONT, it is upstairs in my office where my Comcast modem used to be, using the Coax in. I ran a cat5 cable down to my Samsung Smart TV so I could watch Amazon Prime without buffering, if I add a router I would probably do it there. |

Re: Sheez, at least Verizon provides free routers Ahh..
This I already knew about. If one has 150/65 speed tier or greater, they include the GigE router because it has Gigabit Ports and Wireless N. The Rev. F does not.
Also, I believe that they must swap out ones BPON ONT for a GPON , as well.
I just got confused on the 75/35 tier getting these routers.
Thanks for the clarification, though. |

 | timing This is at a time when generic dual band N and AC routers are going down in price anywhere from 15 -60%!! Another money grab if its important for you to buy your own router. |

You're not going to be getting anything fancy like dual band or Gigabit ports, but at that price, as long as you're not trying to make the router handle a high tier FiOS connection via NAT (improper way to do it anyways unless you're replacing the ActionTec), the wireless portion alone will work better and faster than the radio in the Rev. I. Leave the ActionTec to do it's job as a wired router, and set up a cheap unit above as your Wireless access point. If you get 150Mbps or faster, or live in a horribly congested area for 2.4Ghz, sure, go up the price ladder a bit more and consider replacing the ActionTec in the process. |

Re: Turn the modems WiFi OFF... Lots of mis-information out there. My ancient Rev F had a firmware update that supports Wireless N, it's just not MIMO. Be more specific, the newer ones are MIMO, but since rev F they support Wireless-N.
I added a $15 dlink external antenna, and it covers my entire basement (lots of walls), no problem and chromecast, roku, etc not a hiccup.
I see little reason why you would want to buy one, they are free. The raise in price could be them readying for a modem fee (SP don't usually raise prices unless they are going to introduce a service fee),
but for $99 is is not a bad deal if you use the MoCA component. If not, then for $40 you could get something decent. |

McBane join:2008-08-22 Plano, TX | I got this router for free When I upgraded my plan from 35/35 to 150/65 they gave me one of these for free. I have 2 older Actiontecs and a Westell as well as this Rev. I that I got all for free. It might have to do with my account being business. I don't even use the wireless on it and use another dual band wireless router which has far superior range for my house.
The range on the rev I. is fine for a smaller house or apartment, but now I live on 1/3rd an acre and it barely covers any of that. They're just now putting out powerful enough routers that will cover most of my property now without using repeaters. |

802.11g works great if you like slow. The newer tech is out there and has been for years. No excuse for the people that want wireless and want faster speeds. Personally I am using 802.11ac gear. |
|
 | you can do this... 99% of the time if you call and need a router replaced you will get the gen3 router. Not that it will give you any faster speed if you have anything less then 50Mb/s. There also making up for the rental free router by charging $15 now for a remote replacement. |
