Comments on news posted 2013-12-18 16:28:13: UK incumbent telco British Telecom has announced that the company's broadband customers will now have Internet porn filters enabled by default, and they'll have to "opt out" if they have an interest in seeing the Internet's naughty bits. ..

It's a good choice.

By making it an opt-in, No one should complain they accidentally (or were FORCED) to watch something, and those that choose to do so, may do so.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic.

->Call them up to be added to a "perverted" list.
What happens when a celebrity on this list, and the info leaked? They are going to be ridiculed.

And the only people who will be able to get past the blocker are going to be mostly teenagers.

»Yawn. Heard it all before.

You should read that--oh wait you did

Your post reeks of the anti-social, self serving, loner, what's in it for me person that most even slightly social people dislike, distrust, even fear.
No one is going to make you change any diapers (in fact most would prefer people like you stay far away from kids and their parents) but the minor concessions necessary to meet the actual requirements of the bill are well within the reasonable social contract of modern societies.
loel.

Coming from the guy who posted FIRST to this article and literally every dslreports article I've seen.

Not at all.
If people want porn, it's easy to Opt-in (ie OPT out of the basic filtering)
as long as it is optional and clear it is happening.

Should be

But that requires parents to be proactive and actually give a damn about what their kids are doing, which makes it a non-starter.

partyvan

The opt-in checkmark sounds like something a plaintiff's attorney will subpoena in a employee sexual harassment lawsuit to tell the jury is defendent is a sex addicted pervert/molester.

Re: It's a good choice.

However those that have to opt out maybe exposed to whatever they object to before they get the choice. and it doesn't need to be just porn, violence, religious dogma, politics, ADs, and other potentially offensive subject matter, "once seen, can't be unseen."
Not suggesting massive censorship, due to the graphic nature of the net, and the need of some to offend as many as possible (among other reasons) but a somewhat cautious opt-out.
not much different than what google images offers now.
YOU can permanently set, YOUR account options, Grandma or a parent of young children might choose differently.

A "perverted" list, of course. And if there's any sex crimes in the nearby area, who do you think the local constabulatory will investigate first if they have no leads? The "perverts" in the neighborhood, of course.

and they still should be (not that the filters really stop teens and up.
But it would guess, even you have had search results that bring up something different/unexpected (not always a bad thing) or totally unrelated to your intended target, all to often portrayed in a violent, graphic way.

...and normal sites go goodbye

boobie flopping about
.
Problem with this filtering is there will be a complaints line for the biggest prudes in society to call in and complain that they saw an elbow that looks like a boobie.

Do you reddit? Well that site will be censored due to deeper links. But hey, we are all above 18 years of age on the checkmark log-through page.

At least 3 of the online tabloids in Britain will be either scubbed of the page 3 girls or go bye-bye. Unless they pay the extra hidden fee to their elected local party member to bypass the filters...

Just say 'no' to prohibition. And if you support prohibition... [sarcasm] The police will be there immediately to search your home, as to why you keep screaming you want to protect those children you keep thinking about all the time. Oh you lock your kids in the basement to make them behave, huh? Beat them with the black book of your morals, huh? We knew it wasn't about the children and you were just subconsciously trying to be caught at the abuse you deal out on a daily basis to your kids. [/sarcasm] maybe thats not sarcasm, in some cases

Interesting...

...first 2 responders, most worried about being identified as perverts
If you self identify as "most likely to be a pervert" then perhaps the police should be looking at you RIGHT NOW.

I didn't suggest your choice should be subject to public examination any more that it is now, I'm talking about a tool to prevent those without the self control/social conscience to expose others to their "secret" thoughts.
anything you would choose to hide from the police/courts, is likely inappropriate to expose a young child too.
If you don't understand the concept, perhaps you are among the victims.

Children should not be on the general internet. Pedophiles hand out candy and chat in a gentle manner, and if you are advocating putting small children in contact with these G-rated strangers you're the one suffering from some pathology.

That would be my primary concern, the serendipity effect of search engines (as stupid as filters at times) is certain one of the great values of the "world wide(w) encyclopedia"
On the other hand showing a 6-8 year old pictures of a gang rape or snipershot to the head, brings questions they can't even voice/conceive of while confusing them as to what are acceptable and unacceptable actions within a society at a time when their brains learn the wrong things all to easily.
The fact that you might be so titillated by the page 3 girls, points to a repression caused by another form of unrealistic fantasy (body image) and continues to cause anguish in women AND men through much of western society (eastern societies have there own can of worms (DON'T google that!) over sexual and gender identity)

And no, I have never found it necessary to beat a child, for any reason.

The fact that you might be so titillated by the page 3 girls,

Naw. Thats just a general thing to quote about how a publication could have all sorts of normal stuff that people would not complain about, yet there is the darker side of "hey come on in and we know you want page 3, but you can look all legit by looking at a real magazine with other content".

There is some rightwing site that did a picture session of gitmo guards/hostages, by using children. They call it patriotic, others call it 'whats the f*ck is wrong with you?"

People have also noted that Bing.com is the best porn search engine out there. Videos or stills. And since someone just read that, they are now in a panic and bing.com is about to get deleted off their machines and replaced by ????.

That's exactly what this does! All access starts with limits, doesn't matter that you are a legal wienie wagger in your country, if the kids in my country have this initial blocking available at my house. and you and all your wienie wagging friends are not restricted from exchanging your "goods".
This is like the minimum wage of filtering, it is the lowest standard for parents/people/newbies, too innocent/ignorant to protect to begin with.

BT Categories

Here are the categories that can be filtered(yes it does mention jewellery) -

Going off at a slight tangent any kid with a TV in the UK can watch softcore porn terrestrial channels, free to air, after 10.30PM nationwide(yes British TV has sunk fairly low). David Cameron is attacking the Internet while allowing nationwide porn via TV...

Why there is no option to filter the f..k out social networking and other BS? It is not democratic to take away the option to filter the f..k out social networking BS.

Re: It's a good choice.

I sure hope they extend this to sites that contain bad words, violent pictures or movies, politics and religious sites. I would hate for child to stumble across any of those accidentally greatly harming themselves and those around them.

Hell while we are at it, maybe their DNS servers should just take you straight to a landing page that like AOL's use to be and then you can selectively get only what they want you to get. Unless of course you are smart enough to find the opt-in /opt-out feature page that actually allows you to view content on the web as you so please.
