Sat

Satellite TV, where you too can get owned. We are so screwed.

Horrible thought, but interesting none the less...

From the technical aspect I wonder how they are going to do it?

My first thoughts are that all the commercials for your area will be stored on your DVR and they will play back the ads that are targeted towards you.

In essence they already do this to some extent on cable and OTA by injecting ads locally. Granted they can not get down to the actual household, but I am sure the cable companies could if they wanted to and the cable companies would not have to store the ads on your DVR. Because it would really be trivial to send different commercial streams to different households on a modern cable system.

Send me the conservative ads

I'm anti-tax, anti socialism, and anti corruption and pro gun rights for responsible people like myself so send those Republican Party ads to my DirecTV Dish.

Some political ads can get downright dirty and can be graphic in nature. I remember when Martha Coakley was running for Ted Kennedy's senate seat, her dirty ads cost her the election to Scott Brown.

Re: Sat

The cable company could to the same thing with ease, it would really be trivial to send different commercial streams to different households on a modern cable system.

In the future I could see even more targeted ads. Imagine if they merged the data bases from all the "club cards" stores make you sign up for to get sale prices. They could build a pretty concise profile of the products you buy and how often.

Just think say you buy a tube of toothpaste every two months. Six weeks after your last purchase you could start seeing more ads for toothpaste...

The future looks dark doesn't it?

I don't like either major political party

So can I get only ads from the third parties? There probably aren't too many of those so it'd be like Hulu where you see the same few advertisements over and over

i actually wouldnt mind it, if it saved me money, i.e. showed me a store selling my brand for less than i pay at my reg store.. hell it all ready happens on the net. i looked up that nuwave PIC the other day, didnt like the price, got back to surfing other stuff a few hours later and i see an add for it on facebook for 50% off.

or visit staples, look up a few things. see them advertised later for less. that i actually dont mind.

course people can say its an invation of privacy, but im of the type if im getting the service for less because of it, bring it on. of course thats not what there going to do, theyl keep billing you the same but make some extra $ by offering this targeted service, now that i dont agree with. i think the consumer should be compensated, hell id gladly watch comercials on tv if my bill was lowered, though i dont think theyd like my price per comercial

remember when dialup was free as long as you didnt mind having to see an ad from time to time?

Re: dish

Then DirecTV should make an ad that says we have a channel that actually gives you the weather.

Re: Send me the conservative ads

I would rather not see any political ads at all, all they really do is prove who can weave the biggest believable lie.

However, I sincerely doubt that I would get my wish, and they would be forced upon me anyway.
