Is it HFC or...

...metroE? (the Ethernet could be twisted pair or over coax)

That would be true, if that tier had a cap.

What's the point

Just like Google Fiber's 1 Gbps this is all just a dick measuring contest right now. Doesn't matter if it was unlimited or not. Unless you plan on sharing your connection with the whole neighborhood I don't get it.

Speeds and Pricing

It's actually 100mbit/s up and the price has been bumped for new customers it looks like. Although I'm still locked in at the old rate.

(see »www.comcast.com/505)

My install is entirely fiber based with copper being used for the ethernet hand-off from the metro ethernet switch on the side of the house.

It's exempt from caps. I doubt they really have any incentive to cap either given it's not a shared medium.

well, except when you're streaming video. You still might not be able to get the requisite 3 to 5mbps or so down.

Competition is coming

Should be interesting when comcast takes over TWC in Austin. We already have 3 providers that have announced 1Gb symmetrical connections around $70/mo. I don't see them selling this to too many people at that price. Granted if it were available right now vs waiting for the other 3 to get to my street I might just jump on it.

Stop Screwing With Speeds

And not do the annual price hike, I am perfectly happy with my speed, not my bill.

Re: Competition is coming

MetroE offers advantages over your typical shared residential connections. It's a premium product, which has higher costs.

When Comcast decides offer 1Gb node shared connections, they'll offer it at a comparable price.

Might actually be useful for Comcast, for planning TV/internet delivery 5 years down the road.

Re: Is it HFC or...

which, in all honesty, if it is all fiber, then a heavy ETF is fine, since even if its hanging, fiber is not cheap, and the price of the service likely is enough to cover the cost of the install after 6 to 8 months. if its still HFC or metroE, then a high ETF is not okay.

No need.

I my self would be happy with 10mbps on a wired connection I see no need for that speed just to surf the web.

Re: Is it HFC or...

Metro Ethernet is still fiber. So I'm not sure why you say ETF is ok for fiber, but not if it's THAT fiber!

Re: Competition is coming

TWC already announced 300/20 for Austin, and that it will be available to all of their Austin service area when done with upgrades. Unlike the cherry picking of the 1Gbit providers.

Re: No need.

Then why worry about this 505Mbps tier? You don't need it and they're not giving it to everyone.

No one gets 505Mbps to just surf the web.

Re: Is it HFC or...

Agree jlivingood, 305 an 505 speeds are not docsis speeds, it's fiber to the home that everyone wants. Not only does it require specific equipment to be installed, it also requires fiber to be ran to the home. This is why there is such a high connection fee and ETF.

Re: What's the point

It also has a practical side effect for Comcast. The people who sign up for FTTP service are probably the heaviest users. If they sign themselves up for fiber, then they're also voluntarily freeing up space on the DOCSIS side.

Re: Competition is coming

don't compare an old network that has already paid for itself decades ago and costs little to upgrade with a brand new fiber run that digs trough streets and yards
