hmm....

Most interesting thought........how about.....

Words and bullets are two of the most powerful things a man can have.
No wonder the government wants to take both away.

a must have gadget

after 2 weeks my latest cool gadget finally arrived from China;
»www.aliexpress.com/item/ ··· 114.html
I use a white one at the end of a usb cord to light up my keyboard area
I use another warm.white one to light up all the cables behind my PC.
the finger touch dimmer makes these really useful and not distracting.
I highly recommend these - as I'm sure they'll have many other uses

Re: a must have gadget

So.... do those have to stay plugged in to a usb port, or do they charge in usb and then can be used elsewhere? They show pictures of it being used in other places, and I don't comprehend mangled chinese to english descriptions so well....

Re: a must have gadget

looks like USB powered, no battery. HOWEVER USB wall warts from 12 to 240volts are dirt cheap too.

for more general lighting local stores here are selling CREE 60watt equvialant bulbs for under $5 each (9 to13.5 (depends on color spectrum )watts for a true 800 plus lumens. really cheap (there is a local PUD discount to drop the price) can't wait for the 100 watt-ers ($22) to get the discount.

I picked up a Phillip's 100 watt-er (Equivalent) at Home Depot 2 months back for 20 bucks....I think it is now down to 17. Puts out excellent light. A hell of alot better than the CFL we had.

I have some of the Phillips, good bulbs, but the cree's are better light. Since these maybe the last bulbs I'll ever buy, I want the best (reasonable priced) color match I can get

Got approved for a credit card

I got approved for a credit card for the first time in a while. I got the Chase United Milelage Plus Explorer card because I want airline miles.

I'm more mature now and more responsible now than I was in 2006. I do know you have to pay back what you borrow and then some. But I'll probably get the miles to go home and visit my old friends in Iowa. I also know it carries a $95 annual fee.

I pay all my bills on time now. Too bad I didn't have that card for my cat's $3,300 vet bill. That would have been 3,300 miles towards a trip.

be real careful of that, most people can get more value out of a "cash back" no fee card then you'll ever get in mileage. you do have to set aside the "cash" saved yourself, but it can be used for anything AND collect interest while you wait.

Re: Got approved for a credit card

I'm more interested in the airline perks. I never get to travel, if I can use it to pay my bills and pay it in full every month I'll eventually see that trip home. And I'll probably get to see a couple of friends that I haven't seen in 15 years. But I'll have to drive the rental car to south central and north central Iowa (which can be quite a drive). I have very few friends left in Cedar Rapids, most have left as Cedar Rapids has gone downhill in recent years like Springfield (MA) has in the last 30 years. I may stop by Cedar Rapids but may stay in Des Moines. Iowa City is where all the good stuff is.

Re: Got approved for a credit card

Airline mileage perks are illusory, and extremely hard to redeem.

You'd be better off saving the $95, and consistently shopping your travels far in advance, as well as curtailing any of the additional impulse purchases your new credit line might enable, along with some of your other free-spending habits.

If airline perks are your thing you might want to shoot for an Amex Gold or Platinum next. You need to be traveling a bit to make it pay but travel is what they are best at. Hands down best customer service I have ever had with any type of card and all I keep is the credit card (not gold or platinum card). Extends your warranty by up to one year on new merchandise, cash back, and more with just the credit card too.

two years of the annual fee is more than the cost of a ticket, and you'll have to charge 20K to get enough miles for a free ticket ... its NOT a good deal. Get a no annual fee CC

Re: Got approved for a credit card

Two years of the annual fee is the cost of a round trip ticket on a non stop flight from one major city to another major city (say Boston to Chicago). Take a two plane flight (where you change planes along the way) from one rural market to another rural market you are talking a $500 round trip ticket (checked bags not included). Flying from Portland Maine (PWM) to Cedar Rapids IA (CID) is NOT cheap but if you can earn rewards or use the free checked bags perk it does add up. And I'd rather use a rewards ticket as opposed to pay for it.

When and if I move to Maine, I'll be able to afford more (since I won't be paying rent) so summer trips home won't be out of the budget.

According to the offer you can use it on any United flight on any seat. And that includes United Express. Most likely it's PWM to Dulles to ORD to CID.

That's great, but now you have to spend $25,000 on your card to get a free trip.

Re: Got approved for a credit card

That's when you use it to pay your monthly bills (such as internet, DIRECTV, and Verizon Wireless) and that will add up fast considering how much those services cost. My cell phone bill is nearly $300 a month considering I have 6 devices. Then you pay the balance off in full every month.

Too bad I couldn't have put that $3,300 vet bill on it when the cat broke his leg. We had to use Care Credit as it was an emergency situation.

No, you didn't "have to use Care Credit." You chose to. Its a cat.

You could have just as well euthanized the cat, and picked up a replacement from the local shelter on the way home, and saved a bundle. The spiritual "net" is the same.

I guess you are not an animal lover, when you take in pets (whether you let a stray cat walk in the door or you buy a show quality dog from a breeder), you take on a tremendous responsibility that includes the financial part. Food, litter (for cats), poop bags (for dogs), leashes, collars, and such are the cheap part. Vet bills are expensive and a necessary evil of owning a pet. And as the animal ages, the bills add up because they develop health issues later in life (aka the expensive years). Can't afford vet bills or pet insurance, don't own a pet. You euthanize pets when it's in the best interest of the animal, not in the best interest of your bank account. If I would have had to sell the car and go back to taking the bus, then so be it.

Re: Got approved for a credit card

You'd guess wrong. I just prioritize people first.

Domestic cats and dogs provide nurture and companionship to the old and lonely, among others ... for far less than social programs, drugs and therapy.

But they're in surplus, thanks to a small minority of arrogant and irresponsible owners who fail to (ahem) "fix" the situation. For me, while it may be sad, prematurely putting down Morris - and rescuing Mr. Pickles from an early end, is the most practical - and economical choice, that still yields a benefit for the owner.

You often share with us your rampant consumer habits, and to your credit, you don't complain - except - when it comes to medical care and costs, and airline trips from uber-low-density city pairs. I submit that if you (and others like you) stopped the emotional spending, you would be more able to afford those expensive flights and keep that American car running.

You won't find me, often, criticizing businesses that fill a niche. But CareCredit is in the same league as Payday Loans, Auto Title Loans, Reverse Mortgages, Sallie Mae and others that prey on the vulnerable. The medical professions should be ashamed to affiliate with them.

In other words you are saying Care Credit is a high interest loan.

Its not just a high-interest loan, it is offered to you when you are not in a position to make a rational, considered decision. They have you over a barrel. In a word, predatory.

Re: Got approved for a credit card

I have VPI pet insurance which requires the bill to be paid in full before they reimburse. I didn't have the cash to pay the vet (which demanded payment in full before they operated on the cat) so we used care credit. Once VPI settles the bill, payment will be forwarded to Care Credit.

I'm thinking of buying VPI on the Malamute but the dog is pushing 9 years old so they might not underwrite. Vet bills ain't cheap anymore.

looks interesting... great movement control but skill button based combat, build guild battle forts, build player interactive housing, complex choreographed boss battles, 5-40 man raids (bigger the raid, better/rarer the drops), with Disney cartoonish graphics and attitude. all items are tradeable until you use them.

Verizon Billing fiasco continues...

I'm up to five contacts in the past 8 days now and only now have I seen any result whatsoever. My issue is still not resolved ($45 monthly overcharge), but there's now a dim light at the end of the tunnel. Verizon billing on this one is the Keystone cops of customer service. Probably not the fault of the poor bastards answering the phone though. I blame the Bobs. And Lumbergh of course.

StarGooZon!

We went for a caffeine boost this morning.
My, how things have changed:

I was surprised a few weeks back when our 18th burnt-coffee store in Santa Monica featured Google Wifi backed by TWC cable modem, yielding 3-4M speeds, but this is an order of magnitude higher.
