Re: Ughsaid by nothing00:said by coldmoon:The day the deal is inked is the same day I become a new Dish customer... "Welcome to the Dish Network!" Never again for me. My Dish installer cut all the cables he wasn't using, even after being warned we had internet on one of the cables. Took an extra 2 hours to track down the cuts and run new cables. |

This should be blocked by regulators tooI've had DirecTV for years. It and Dish are the only alternatives in my area to AT&T and Comcast, both of which I view as evil but AT&T is one of the most evil companies on Earth.
However, I expect it to go through. DirecTV subscribers have been on a slow decline for years and they've never had a real broadband alternative. |

DirecTV is doing just fine. It's Dish Notwork and their sports hating overlord that have been having quarters of lost subscribers. I think it was 3Q 2012 that was the best quarter in history for DirecTV with almost 1/3 of a million adds. |

This makes no senseAT&T could invest this money in fiber and steal customers from not only the satellite providers, but the cable companies too.
Hint: I am a dissatisfied suburban/rural AT&T customer and I'm not happy because of internet speed offered. I already have TV with Dish and would refuse to pay for TV service with AT&T/Directv because they won't spend any money to upgrade our fiber to the curb neighborhood to give us the internet experience I want. I REFUSE to put anymore money into AT&T's pocket until they stop ignoring us DSL customers. No AT&T wireless and no AT&T TV until they spend money on our internet services.
Poorly thought out AT&T! |

For once AT&T should be bold and invest that money in FTTH!AT&T should forget the DirecTV nonsense and focus on investing in building out the best and most widely available fiber network!
CEO Randall Stephenson should do whatever it takes to make that investment happen while keeping the shareholders and investors in tow. Tell these folks whatever it takes to get the long term investment done ASAP.
AT&T START MAKING THE LONG TERM INVESTMENTS YOU KNOW YOU NEED TOO...
IN THE WIRED FIBER NETWORK!
LTE wireless will never be able to handle the number of data users and do it effectively and the cost to consumers and data caps make it an unsavory choice for consumers in the long term. |

Re: What about independent retailerssaid by IowaCowboy:I hope this doesn't affect retailers like Solid Signal who sell DirecTV hardware to consumers who prefer to DIY install and not allow a hack job contractor to mess up their house. When I move to Maine, it's my Grandmother's house and I want to install it MY way, not some hack job installer's way. I take my time, fish wires through walls, and use wall plates. I don't drill holes in floors and pull the coax through and terminate it. I demand workman like work, something that most CATV/satellite installers don't possess. Thats because these big billion dollar corporations take the low end and hire subs who further sub out. You pay crap you get crap... and we ,the consumer, love the "free" installation |

I guess Verizon was right..Verizon choose to go fiber into the home, no more copper. And people called them foolish, investors were unhappy, many said it would never work.
At&t decided to go fiber to the neighborhood and then back to copper to the home. People thought this was the smarter choice
Now its biting them in the ass.. Need to use Directv for its TV service and leave phone and data on the hybrid fiber network.. |

Re: $50 billion?A conservative guess is that AT&T has already dropped over 100 billion in fiber due to the "backhaul" fiber that was run to enable LTE. Missed by most is the fact that LTE has theoretical max speeds approaching 1gbps. On top of that, it just so happens that it would allow U-verse to stream directly into homes, along with a decent internet connection, out in the middle of nowhere.
If you look at Verizon's LTE coverage map, you might notice that it's available in very rural parts of some states such as southwestern Kansas.
AT&T is laying down FTTH service, but only where it already had substantial amounts of fiber. It's not an accident that Google deployed a fiber ring in Kansas City, in the middle of robust amounts of AT&T fiber, and now AT&T is doing precisely the same thing in Kansas City.
To answr your question, however, $50 billion may or may not get you far. While rural areas don't have a residence every 150 feet that need their yards dug up, they also may not even have "backbone fiber" even remotely close from which you could start a fiber run that could be finished in any sensible amount of time.
LTE is probably the savior for rural customers. It will also effectively break down what were once geographical restrictions on how many subscription television services could bring service to your home.
You will notice that companies who do not provide both landline and mobile broadband by brand name (example is Comcast) just so happen to be partnered with somebody who does and offer you a discount if you sign up for cellphone service with the partner.
CenturyLink (formerly sprint) has this type of partnership. My guess is that Verizon is partnered with Dish Network?
Satellites become a very inefficient way to deliver television service, possibly, in the face of a fully deployed LTE network. |

HmmmI live in an isolated rural area surrounded by AT&T. It is not available. Direct TV is offered by my phone company .. that won't happen either. I much prefer Dish to DTV. I''ve had Ma Bell and SBC. I much prefer the Bell before the breakup. I never did like the AT&T first pay go wireless service. It didn't even work with AT&T towers! The marriage will be a mess one way or the other. |

yeah yeahYeah yeah....everyones going to leave and the monopolies will scramble with price drops and begging....
Lol no one is going to do anything. Everyone will continue to pay whatever they decide....as we always have......as usual we'll all be stuck with whatever one or two tv and internet options we have, if were lucky.
This is 'murica!!! We accept the status quo.....anything else is too much hassle |

AT&T acquisition of DirecTVSince the days of Divestiture, when the Bell System was broken up into pieces, it has reassembled itself into 2 giants that continue to eat up the competition. Less competition means higher prices. Will there be forces within government to challenge this acquisition, or will they be bought off ? As a captive ATT wireline user who also is limited to satellite TV due to my location, and who is fined by ATT monthly for exceeding its measly bandwidth allocation, I oppose this transaction as anticompetitive and therefore bad for consumers. |

I've had DirecTV for yearsInstaller was great. The dish has never had to be realigned even since we have experienced intense storms during the past six yrs or so. I call every quarter to retention to see if there is anything they can do to lower my bill, and they always do.
I have TWC option here , but I hate cable companies! I have 24/2 with my telco that works great. |
