So...

Why does this kind of BS keep happening?

Money isn't Speech, It's Bribery.

Those running for Congress don't need to understand technology. They only need to understand that the only way they can get elected is to get enough money from special interests to buy victory. And that is because voters pick the candidates with the most TV commercials.

What amazes me that people think this is any different than what has been going on since George Washington. The only reason lobbyists exist now is for liability and plausible denialability.

Bloomberg had a good segment on Comcast's lobbying...

The U.S. of Comcast: Follow the $19M in Lobbying

After watching that video, my first wonder is whether Comcast will be offering Mr. Wheeler a cushy job at Comcast for all he has done for Comcast while he was at the FCC.

If you are not backed by big money, you would never even stand a chance of getting in. Sadly, modern politics, you gotta play their games and owe them favors before you can get to a higher office than local.

That sir is a lie.

The way things are yesterday or presently do not set them in stone as being permanent and the only way of things happening.

If you take away laws designed to create corruption and take away laws intended to provide more help to those who do not need help, then you create more equality that allows anyone willing and able to be chosen by others to do the task desired.

A simple start to most of the issues would be to make it illegal for elected officials to have private meetings or correspondence or any communication with lobbying entities. Ensure that their communication is with individuals, aka voters, and extend this to all their staff and family members.

Our government is more commercialized and pro private profit before anything else than it has ever been, nothing happens unless it can only positively affect a non-government entities revenue.

Approve then regulate Comcast to the hilt! Treat them like a monopoly.

Next Merger?

So do AT&T and Verizon merge next?

It might be a lie, but since your profile says WA, then you should know that people (especially in King County) vote only for the people with the D next to their name

Let the merger happen

But, then force the HSI to be split from comcast/nbc. I can guarantee you that the caps would go away if internet was NOT beholden to broadcast TV. Take away the incentive to 'kill' streaming TV over the internet, and you wouldn't have these netflix blackmailings and other things. Let comcast/nbc sell TV services, but, make the internet company only sell internet. The problem which will(has) arisen, is that comcast sees streaming internet tv as competition, and they use doubletalk and lies to force users to pay more for the bytes they consume. If they DON'T want to become regulated like the phone companies, then it HAS to be in their best interest to provide the best service for the money. Collusion happens, but it doesn't have to.

And as you are so familiar with WA you know that for instance Yakima county which solidly votes R takes more taxpayer money than they themselves pay while the solid D King county actually takes less tax money than they pay in.

One of many fine examples of dirtbag conservative politics sucking on tax money while speaking out against it.

muddy waters..

Verizon muddied the waters when they spun off parts of their copper network.. this was probably the first sign that these big telcos and cable co's were going to go against the effort to reform telecom into a robust competitive marketplace.

Nevertheless, video could have been a lucrative marketplace if companies weren't so damned greedy for profits. Instead you have AT&T and Verizon trying to grab every penny they can from the wireless customers and cable companies trying to circle the wagons a little closer on video by raising the price of broadband. To make matter worse, you have telcos JOINING in (call it localized collusion/racketeering) when they raise prices lock step in one another while letting technologies wither on the vine or make them so expensive as to be meaningless.

All this lobbying money could have been spent to improve the network footprint they already own, but NO they have to chase higher profits. Be greedy as a mother called Verizon, end up like Pa-Cable...

Many people do. But the problem is the sheep only vote for two parties and in Massachusetts its basically one party.

Comcast Employing 40 Lobbying Firms to Get Merger Approved

No wonder their rates keep going up.

It's not programming, it's overhead. (And who in hell needs 40 lobbying firms to begin with?)

Indeed. You would think they could use that cash on company improvements like hiring better CSR's and such.

I can't see this merger getting denied.

Not that it's a precedent or anything, but if XM and Sirius could pull off a merger of what became a true monopoly, then Comcast should not have any problems - just throw the $$ around and agree to a few temporary regulations. I called up Comcast last week to check their pricing and asked them about data caps on their internet service and was told that all caps are under moratorium pending the merger.

Think Customer Last

So instead of paying more, U.S. based reps to man the phones and provide better customer service then their outsource counterparts, we get lobbyists. NICE!!

petition webster for a dictionary redefinition

I want them to update the word lobby to include what it means due to the way it's acted on, ie, money changing hands to influence decision making, or more to the point, bribery. When I look up synonyms for bribery, lobbying should pop up as equivalent.
