Yeah, right.

As a Verizon worker in NYC, I can tell you there is no rush at all to roll out FIOS... no sense of urgency, no talk of what still needs to be done; hell, we run out of FIOS supplies all the time because they don't want to spend the money for stock. JIT becomes 'we will get to it eventually.' As far as the landlords, I guess there may be some looking for kickbacks but I have landlords, supers, & tennant association members come up to me all the time to complain that they contacted Verizon over a year ago to try and get FIOS to their buildings but are still waiting. I guess all it takes is to hire a good PR firm to make up some lies and your company doesn't really have to DO anything for their end of the bargain.

Are you referring to Dallas? I have not seen an announcement, although that's not to say it isn't happening. Do you have a link?

They stated they'd be bringing Gigapower to Dallas, but like much of the project they've been pretty ambiguous about specifics: »AT&T To Bring 1 Gbps 'GigaPower' To Dallas

Re: Yeah, right.

In Massachusetts the law requires landlords to grant a cableco access to the building if one or more tenants requests cable. I guess since FiOS is a cable service that would include FiOS. But I'm sure that would only apply in the cities and towns where Verizon has FiOS TV since that part of the general laws predates broadband.

I was reading that they wanted to start using microtrenching to significantly lower the install cost. While it will, it still is only "profitable" in 4+ unit brownstones. Still will cost over $10k a unit, whereas say at my house it took the tech 40 minutes to fix the bad wiring diagrams, then run the cable and then another 20 minutes to trench on a followup visit.

Let's face it, wireless is the cash cow so $ spent on infrastructure while excellent long term just doesn't interest wall street. That is why they need classification as a utility, then w/ protections, etc the capital outlay makes sense.

This running multiple lines to a dwelling is a total waste of money.

How?

Verizon, based in Manhattan, has declined to provide the city with maps charting the street-by-street progress of its fiber network, citing the intense competition for cable customers

How is providing maps charting street by street progress related to the "intense" competition?

I love this attempt at not providing information when they are hiding something. First, disclosing this information as requested and should be required will not be news to any competitor as I am sure they already know 100% where they have deployed. Secondly, implying there is intense competition is funny within itself.

Irony...

I am selling my home and I made a nice flyer for the realtor: FiOS available and installed! Up to 300Mbps and great HDTV packages!
Great cell reception, full bars throughout home and 4 of 5 bars in basement (ATT and VZW verified).

Then I get some "person" that asks the realtor, What is FiOS?

I live in an area that was cherry picked. I have no doubt on that. However, I am upset that where I want to move to, has no FiOS. Crack I tell you...its crack.

Re: Yeah, right.

I live in a duplex and a service provider has to legally run two separate lines from the curb as each unit is considered a separate subscriber. So if FiOS ever does come to my area, they may be able to get away with one drop from the pedestal but they'd have to split it to two separate fibers outside and each unit would have its own ONT in the basement. But with Comcast, they have to run two separate drops from the street to each unit.

Each unit is entitled to full signal. You can't just run a drop and use a splitter between the two units of a duplex when the tenants are paying full price for broadband. Why should my modem drop out just because I don't live in a single family house.

Landlords can be a pain in the ass...

Some of them think they are sitting on a gold mine and they want a cut of the action. They hear these "stories" where some other landlord got a huge chunk of cash for letting some company bring fiber into their building so they think they are going to hit a jackpot too.

We used to run into the same thing with wireless. If you were a WISP and needed to place a tower or antennas they would jack the price up because their brother's, sister's, best friend's daddy got $23590384029348 from Nextel to put up a tower across the street.

Thanx Karl. More AT&T promises; at least VZ is actually deploying fiber in some parts of NYC.

I agree; VZ should provide the maps, but only if such information is required under their franchise agreement with NYC.

If it is required, then VZ should provide them, perhaps under seal if they think such information is competitively sensitive.

Re: Yeah, right.

Verizon here in C&P Telephone VA territory does not give a crap either. Your colleagues are forced to work at turtle dial up speed with construction, even though they have a deadline of Summer 2015 to totally service my town - all 3 sq mi of it as well as any rural areas that Comcast serves in the county.

(The county did a good job with the franchise - wherever Comcast has plant + housing density above 30 homes per sq mi)

They only managed to wire up a high-end subdivision outside of town limits, as well as some of the streets around it last year. The fiber on part of main street has been up for 2 years, dangling unterminated.

How the heck is VZ going to meet the deadline? I dont mind them going over it as it involves huge fines. They earned it for what they are doing to their non-FIOS areas, and for dumping some of their shitty networks on Frontier and FairPoint.

Anyways, I was told FIOS equipment was installed in our CO back in 2007. But it was never turned on until this year! Insane! How can VZ Management spend so much money on equipment, only not to use it?

The vast majority of people who are serious (qualified) about buying a house are concerned about price, school districts, and the neighborhood culture. Broadband availability, or lack thereof, is the last thing on their mind.

The most successful people I know, with the nicest houses, are the last people to call me, asking "I think we have the [Verizon] DSL, it doesn't seem to be working well, my kids are bugging me about it. Is there something else we can get?"

CEO Greedy McAdam kissing the ass of the shareholders...

.....at the expense of the long term health of the company.

You know Mr. McAdam, being a CEO involves being a leader, and
BALANCING influence among interested parties, whether they be
shareholders, company executives, customers, or rank and file employees. Unfortunately you have decided to cede all influence to the shareholders and allow the long term health and viability of the company to wither on the vine, with shortsighted vision.

I hope your incompetence ends up allowing you to hang yourself with your own rope, so to speak. Disgraceful.

FiOS should be available at just about every former Bell Atlantic residence, and it should have happened a couple of years ago.

Where is Bill de Blasio NOW?

de Blasio, when still only Public Advocate seeking higher office, made a big deal over Verizon's stonewalling and not fulfilling their commitment to 100% wire NYC with FiOS.

Now that de Blasio has obtained the higher office he sought he suddenly is too busy and quite quiet about the same Verizon he previously blasted.

From his Public Advocate days not too long ago:

Same with satellite, there are certain FCC granted tenants rights (with limitations) on installing satellite dishes on apartment complexes. Just hope your apartment is on the south side of the building in the northern hemisphere.
