Down with that technology.

1. Expect more wrecks involving injuries, death, paralyzed persons etc.
2. Imagine the pissed off lovers when they see some strange girl/guy on their phone talking to their other. Mortal Kombat right there!
3. More web access? Get a #$^ computer or a PDA, it's more of a distraction on a phone
4. We see enough people losing cellphones around here. Imagine losing those things
5. Not everyone will spring for it, may include additional charges.

OK, I get pissed when I see these retards on the roads talking on the phone serving, stopping suddenly, speeding up and hitting a curb, flicking ppl off and more. How senseless can you get!? talking on the phone takes away 40% of your attention in your brain! You need that 40% for the road so you don't hit your neighbors kid!

My sister got in an accident cause the idiot was 'seeing who was calling on the phone' while driving down the curve 30 mph.

Please, people, do we need more of these pinheads? Seriously, I'm sick of waiting 2 day's to get my car's oil flushed/heater repair/new spark plugs because of these people talking on cellphones getting into wrecks because of it. It wastes my time, and wastes yours too probably if you agree with me.

I believe cellphones should be banned in cars, expect for EMERGENCIES ONLY. Or if the passenger is only talking. Im talking about the headset ones to, mind you.

Anyone else agree with me?

oh btw: I did get in a mild wreck because a driver swerved into me....talking on the phone.

Thanks for the Picture of Shibuya

I lived in Japan for a few years and it brings back memories. Looks like you took the picture from Hachiko (the dog) Square. Hope you enjoyed yourself there.

Re: Thanks for the Picture of Shibuya

I lived there for a few years as well.. had a great time! I feel sorry for tourists, it isn't like disney land, it takes months (and years) to discover the best of the city and country.

Exactly. One the things I really miss are the little hole in the wall restaurants and bars (izakaya). A lot of atmosphere in those places. Sometimes they look like they were going to fall down but that gave it a lot of character.

Now they have CAMERAs built in!

Just got back from Tokyo this week and was blown away by Panasonic's J-P51. Among other things it has a built in digital camera. My son shot a my picture while we were in a restaurant; I asked him to email it to my office back in Houston. Click and done! They also have third party software so you can compose music for the phone, upload it to your own phone, and email it to your friends. As far as utility, my son would load the Japanese railroad or subway schedules on the phone; whenever we needed to go somewhere, he'd put in when we needed to be there and it would give us a complete schedule of what trains/arrival times/departure times/etc... In case anyone would like to take a peek at the J-P51, here's the URL... »www.j-phone.com/kisyu/jp51/

What is the celluar NETWORK in Japan?

Could anyone please tell me what networks does Japan adopt. Is there any GSM capable phone that I can buy in Japan? If so, do you know how much Japanese Yen?

Cheers,

Tokyo cell phone

I just came back from Tokyo and bought a Sanyo J-Sa04 model cell phone for $20 new Yes $20.Out with the old in with the new. This model has color LCD screen, built in camera,SMS.long email and web capable. No sign up fee and no contract.About $30 a month.
Battery life is not as good as the simpler Kenwood color LCD phone I had before .Charge every three days.I think in Japan the lifestyle is not the same as the US in many ways so the market is different.Even outside Tokyo were there is more travel by automobile most people have cell phones and not the obsolete stuff you find in the states. Finally in Japan I think that the DoCoMo,J-Phone/Vodaphone and AU can earn more money because they have content to sell along with the regular voice service.
One thing I did notice is there are very few Motorola or Nokia phones and I didnt see any Samsung. Free trade doesnt apply there.

What's with all the phone envy???

Great article!

It's interesting to see the comments given by all the posters here. Some want to have this "magical" technology that will somehow transform their lives for the better. Others can do without. The question that should be asked is not "Why don't we have the same technology as they do in Japan?" but rather "What is it that most North Americans are going to gain from this technology?" Frankly, business is run to make money. Believe me, if the telco's thought they could make more money off of us by upgrading their technology and selling us better phones, don't you think they'd be all for it? I believe that the telco's are giving us what we (the majority of us) are asking for which is affordable products and services. If we all were not satisfied with what we are getting, then why are we still buying? Isn't this how capitalism works?? In the end, the consumer is the one that drives any business and North American consumers are are nowhere near the same league as the Japanese consumer. This is why technological advances are more readily available in Japan as the Japanese are always accepting of new things that could improve their lives. We can all conjecture as to why this is but the simple fact is that the way Japanese culture works compared to North American culture is totally different.

On a side note, the developing technologies that appear every so often can create confusion with everyday consumers. Some technologies compete with others further confusing the issue (eg. GSM, TDMA, CDMA). One of the benefits of adopting technology is that if one technology gains wider acceptance than the other technologies, it will likely be more much expensive and/or just fade away (eg. IBM's Micro-Channel Architecture).

On driving with a cell phone, driving is not a right but a privilege. Not everyone has the necessary skill to operate a vehicle within the proper limits of safety and the law. To try to operate a vehicle with ANY distraction is careless use of a weapon.
