Post fake email addresses... everyone play!

On my web site I have obscure web pages similar to Justin's pages that were baited. My web pages have a thousand email addresses buried in a couple hundred nonsensical copied and pasted bullcrap html pages. I change the email addresses out periodically... It's easy! Just do a search and replace for @crazydomainname.com and change it to @othercrazyname.com, and viola! A fresh batch of bait.

Do I get spidered? Sure! But it's a warm fuzzy knowing that along with my one good email address, they acquired a thousand bounces. If everyone played, this would screw the spiders.

Re: Post fake email addresses... everyone play!

I just D/Led my Spamcop blacklist and put it on a test page on a server I'm putting up. That'll get them, all of those addresses are spammers. Wonder what the spambots look for specifically, a mailto tag, or the @ and parse forwards and backwards to a space.

Re: Post fake email addresses... everyone play!

If you have all the addresses on one page, most spam spiders will bypass that list. The reason is because it suspects a baited page.

You have to put like 5 or less addresses per page in order to get maximum impact, and then link to them in a series.

ICQ Spam

On the subject of spam. Is it just me, or has spam on the instant messenger program ICQ become just as bad as (or worse than) e-mail?

Just refuse to accept messages/connections from users not on your Contact List, and voila, all the spam is gone.

I would rather not do that, but if spam keeps coming in at the rate it has I will do it. It is nice to know that option is there. In the mean time the ignore button is being used for all it's worth.

I used to get a lot of spam on ICQ, until one day this link came across also: »www.binaryresearch.net/blockme/
I did some of the things suggested and the spam was basically gone after that.

Poison the Harvesters

Those with their own servers can poison the email harvesting robots.

The WPoison source code can be downloaded for free at »www.monkeys.com/wpoison/.

When the harvester links to the WPoison program on a web site it locks into an infinitely deep list of randomly generated bogus email addresses and may never extricate itself.

Higher bot counts on some IP's....?

What's interesting about this whole thing is that I've found that some IP addresses are for some reason probed 500% more than others.

I have a dynamic IP account here and I've noticed that on days (or weeks) that I get handed an IP in the range of 66.32.xxx.xxx I get hammered by the TON (as logged by the firewall) - and almost exclusively by IP's located in Taiwan, Denmark, Germany, Japan, China, etc. The pings, probes, attempted connects and so on come in literally at the rate of several every second. When I get an IP in the range of 165.121.xxx.xxx I get only the "normal" number of pings, TCP requests, etc. logged at the firewall.

Here's an interesting question though also - I make sure that my e-mail address isn't shown anywhere on my website, but like most people, I have several "mailto:" links around the site. What's been happening lately where the spammers have now figured out how to probe the mailto: and harvest the e-mail from there? - because I've been getting spammed occasionally at e-mail addresses where that the spammer could only have gotten from a harvested mailto: link.

Did the same experiment similar results!

I am affiliated with a small international charity.
we have a weekly mailing list of about 10thousand people if that is any idea of the size of the group. I own my own separate domain so i did the exact same thing i used a unique email address for a contact on a minor page.

I average one or two emails a day and that web site was up for 6 months and has not been up for 3 months.

I agree that there should be more work by authorities to track down and stop these people but with 911 and many other "priorities" making sure we don't get too many annoying emails is not a big deal!

Protect emails in a website

I have a web site with hundreds of emails. Each is displayed in a picture created by php server.
The link mailto: on this picture does not exist, but is replaced by a javascript wich decrypt the parameter.
The link is something like that :
decodeEmail
("6d6f632e65636e656e7265746e6940726569757162")

Not too complex, but enough ...

spam will not answer if you reply to it...

So why doesn't your ISP create a mail daemon that checks the mail for a return and if it doesn't have one, don't follow through with the delivery...
