will it work with any DSL line??

the answer is?? The adapter bundle will come with a start-up disk pre-configured for a number of major ISPs, including EarthLink Inc. and SBC Communications Inc. , though Sony said any ISP can be used with the service.

now that i have a dsl line i cant wait to get playing with my PSX2..in months to come

just my 2 cents

A Step in the Right Direction

Something to make people need a broadband connection
dial-up wont cut in with Playstation 2.

Go Sony!!!

Too little too late

Add on components comprise of less that 10% of sold consoles. With so little people buying it...little software manufacturers will support it. Especially in the face of the "technically" superior XBox and the fact that to save cash poor Squaresoft, Sony may have to port Final Fantasy to XBox.
(Let's not even start a PS2 vs. XBox debate).

Even Konomi is contemplating Metal Gear Solid X. Those and GT3 are the main reasons to buy a PS2. Do the math: PS2, $300, adapter $40, hard drive, not available.

To better compete I think Sony should wait and cut it's losses with PS2 trying to compete with XBox and since they've already moved up PS3's release date do to the unexpected popularity of XBox...the PS3 is way better positioned to be an XBox killer.

You just can't have a good gaming platform mixing broadband with narrow band...just like with PC's. You can't have unilateral support for voice communications and even similar latency with a mix like that.

Edited for clarification.

Disc swapping...another reason Sony should wait for PS3 to introduce online gaming.

I agree...

It'd be nice to see this happen, but historically add-ons DO NOT work well in the console market. No company will develop decent games to work on a device that few own.

So you are saying that PC's are not a good online gaming platform just because they're not "broadband only"? Even within broadband there's such a wide range of different technologies incorporating latency fluctuations that I think your notion of broadband only won't fly on any platform for now.

Oh, and by the way, Grand Theft Auto 3 is as good a reason as any to buy PS2.

Bunch of new frag bait.

Consoles suck in my vast opinion going from pre atari days compared to todays pc games.
A good idea though about online playing. I just don't see anyone kick'in ass with
a console. I should say if its dm game. Ass for first person tactical and role playing I can see it. Ok they don't suck I do not use them anymore. Sorry if I disturbed anyone. Maybe I will bust out some super mario or buck rodgers from the coleco days.

Check the sales figures for x-mas this past year............you know the one x-box was supposed to dominate!Sony has built a loyal following and thats why the external perp. WILL sell...............x-box is more powerful but size (heh...heh) doesn't always matter!
Sony has had a great product for7 yrs now.......bill gates thought he would build the fastest leanest machine on the block and guess what SONY'S SELLING MORE....PERIOD!!
Dear old Mr. Gates would have been better served to use another name/co. to launch his new gadget...........just his name alone turns off most people! (maybe Enron would be intrested!)

I'm saying that when you mix speeds, it isn't as good a' gaming environment as a homogenious one. When you have some people on narrow band, then say voice chat in Counter Strike won't be supported, whereas XBox being all broadband, most everyone would be able to participate in voice chat during Ghost Recon, Doom III, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Robotech, or even Halo should Bungie wish to take advantage of the hard drive and release an update.

GTA 3 is also being ported to other platforms. Therefore not a reason to buy PS2 per se...not like say Final Fantasy X or Metal Gear Solid or Gran Turismo 3.

Re: Bunch of new frag bait.

i love Halo online, it's a blast.

the one big problem though, is that my 128 kbit capped upload speed on cable doesnt cut it for this game at times.

not only do the new generation of consoles need broadband to play online, they need better broadband than many of us can get atm. if i could find a DSL provider that could get service to me i would jump on a line with 256 kb up or better, but unfortunately i live too far away.

hey maybe something good comes of it though, and cable providers start offering 256 kbit up lines for gamers at a small increase in cost or something soon

I really wish I could play others with THPS3, and see how my skills are. I am a madden fan so it will be FUN to play against others on the internet, I'm assuming ea will come out with madden 2k3 with some internet features hopefully.

Is this the beginning of the end of PC gaming?

Xbox has an ethernet connector, PS2 is coming out with it shortly. Is it only a matter of time before consoles rule the gaming world and I have to buy one to play the latest and greatest games? I'm merely throwing this out there for consideration.

My theory is that the more these companies can get you to buy, the better. Rather than having a "do it all" PC, you now need to buy an additional product to play games, but still need a PC for email, doc writing, managing your finances, etc. It's a shame because I don't play enough games to justify a console.

To all you Nay-sayers

This is a step in the right direction, many of you who say "no one will support this" are saying the same thing as pessimistic DSL people. It will be supported, and I believe PS2 will be a long term system as was it's predecessor. Right now in Japan they have Capcom vs SNK 2 with netplay ability, which greatly improves the longevity of this game and will for other fighting games. As for optimizations, thats another issue, hopefully their code will run half-decent with 384kbps. I hear in Japan that DSL is dirt cheap.

I don't think PC Gamers will be alienated. PC Gaming is still a profitable industry with certain games on there that only feel right on a PC. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to play Age of Empires with a controller.

Granted consoles have unique and fun games of their own i.e GTA3 and GT3. New consoles seem to hold slight graphical edges compared to a PC for a few months, and then fall behind. They kind of work interchangeably since both types of systems cater to the same people IMO.

How far will this go?

With the PS2 only supporting around 4 players total for online gaming and various PC games supporting 32 players, PS2 has a long way to go.

Latency has more effect on online gaming than throughput. How does the problem manifest itself?

Even the President of Sony acknowledged that the XBox has shorted the projected live span of PS2. I have DC, PS2 and XBox and XBox is so much better...programmable shaders don't lie. All of the major publishers are committed to XBox prog development which means the games will get better and better. PS2's days are numbered. Sony should have saved the money and put it into PS3 development. Nintendo felt a few years ago what Sony feels now. Except...now where's Mario?

Also, no console will ever be as powerful as a top PC gaming rig. Powerful games nead powerful rigs.

On what do you base this information? I'm actually very interested in buying a console system since the N64 seems completely dead. I usually wait until systems are utterly exhausted before I purchase a new one and now's the time. One year from now, which system will still be pumping out the titles? The PS2 or the XBox. Also, pardon my ignorance, but what's the deal with the PS3? Is it actually in development or just a prototype?
