Comments on news posted 2002-03-18 11:11:12: As financial reality thundered down upon the head of the dot-com boom, there wasn't a huge amount of surprise as content sites began shifting toward a subscriber model and charging for broadband content. ..

Is it just me... or does CNN really *suck* now..

Has anyone actually watched CNN recently? Wow, what a degeneration... All I can sure say it's sure been wrecked since AOHell took it over.... I used to watch CNN and Headline News quite a lot. Now, I can barely stand five minutes of it.

What's up with the silly inane banter and lowest common denominator 'humor' and just stupid commentary all through out the production? (Example: Fictitious, but you get the idea...):

"... was a multiple vehicle accident today on I-53 near Somewhereville [Announcer jumps in:] Golly Gee I sure hope that doesn't happen to my sister who's on her way to see me! [Back to newscast] Approximately 75 vehicles were involved...."

etc etc

Let them charge. And die. Die, Die, DIE. Bye!

Never Will I pay For Content

On principal, I will never give money for any content. Period...

Not because I'm against spending money for quality content because it is going to be abvailable SOMEWHERE for free.

I for some reason find it dis-tastefull when previous free sites go pay-to-view...kind of makes me question there stability too.

CNN.com will go bust

Watch the hits on CNN plummet once it costs ya. Nobody needs CNN. They are out of their mind if they think people will pay. Only suckers will. Surfers go there because they are well known and free. Start charging and peeps will leave for no-charge sites.

This is absurd

I pay 50/mth to get on the net- and now everyone and their brother wants to make sure I pay some type of fee to get anywhere on the net- well, they can kiss my a$$. I live on a military income and dont make that kind of money. The internet is becoming something that slowly just needs to go away or replaced by different means to get information to people without being ripped off of their money left and right.

Last time I checked library cards were free- I may just get rid of the computer and net all together and stick to the library- sure they may not always be up to date but they are free

I couldn't agree more. It's time we have a non-commercial network for the sake of information to go along with the commercial Internet. Unfortunatly I don't think that is ever going to happen.

Smart business plan...

CNN, smart business plan. Lets see how..

1. Costs increase, to pay for the billing system, employees who operate it, etc.

2. Declining revenue & loss of market share - Viewers who formerly watched this stuff on CNN will leave in droves, and go to other sites with free or less expensive content.

3. Declining revenue - CNN will be forced to lower advertising rates, as they will have less viewers. (One benefit, there will be no advertising on these 'pay-per-view' pages, as there will be very few viewers other than CNN executives that don't have to pay.

4. Loss of market share - Competitors will be able to raise advertising rates, due to their increase in viewers.

5. Declining revenue & loss of market share - There will be less people around to purchase other CNN services, and visit other free CNN pages, and their associated advertising. Of course, these people will be spending their money, and watching advertising on competitors web sites.

Brilliant strategy - Does CNN really think the five people paying for this service will offset their losses? Another one bites the dust.

Bright Idea...

Okay, so wanna know my opinion? Who cares – Here it is:

Everyone wants to whine and complain because internet sites may start charging for content.

My opinion, more power to them! I support them 100%!

Those who wish to argue, let’s look at it this way:

These companies have to pay for the access, equipment, staffing, and facilities to host their site. Your measly $49/month does not contribute any bit to their $500k+ monthly bill for everything that has to go into their services.

But…but…they have pop-up ads everywhere!

Geez, were we just not discussing the fact that even a 1% hit rate on pop-up ads seemed nearly impossible. Well, if that is the case, and they only way they make money is by having people click the pop-up ads, how could they support their site?

CNN also has television commercials which gives them money (because the cable companies pay a very small fee to get the feeds – If any), but the commercial time has always supported the television portion of the network. Now with an insane telecommunications bill, they need to pay for that too.

Do I think that more sites will start doing this? More already have. Anyone belong to Yahoo? POP E-Mail and FTP Web Site access are history. Why? Cost…

Again, I support them 100%! If you want to whine and complain, why don’t you go out and set-up an internet outfit with your own staff, servers, OC-3 access, and so on. Then, without anyone paying you for your content, see just how long you can live off of banner ads alone.

If anyone has been screwing anyone here, it’s been us, the end-users by using services without helping to support them.

People Will Pay

First let me say this: The material that is currently available in most pay services is, for me, not worth paying for. I personally don't even subscribe to cable TV. However, people will pay.

I find it ironic that several of the posts on this board bemoan the "pay for content" move, but then refer to their cable TV!! I'm old enough to remember when cable TV was a luxury of the wealthy. The reality was that "free" Broadcast TV didn't provide enough content to keep the general population fully satisfied, so more and more people saw the value of "paying for content" and subscribed to cable TV. As more people subscribed, the economy of scale and additional competition made the service more available until we came to what we have now- pay TV is ubiquitous, you can get it literally anywhere with more channels than you could possibly ever watch regularly even if you tried. We could debate whether that's good or bad, but it's a fact.
And people pay for it. In fact we find it out-of-the-ordinary when people DON'T pay for it.

There will always be "free", but there will always be "pay for content" which provides more and fulfills the desire of the populace (or at least tries). A not dissimilar example is the advent of the mobile phone. People will pay. Whether it be for more content, more service, more mobility, more whatever. If people desire it, they will pay extra to get extra. For good or for ill, that is the way free markets work.

Think about it. How many people out there DON'T have cable/satellite TV and DON'T have a cell phone? I propose to you that it won't be long before we will be able to get satellite Digital TV as well as content rich internet on our cell phones; and people will pay.... probably including most of the individuals posting on this board.

why am i paying for garbage??

So CNN wants to be paid, real player, and every body else!
i pay 9.95 a month for Intertainer (which sucks) 9.95 for real player (again sucks) 6.95 for a radio program that i think is worth it, 9.95 for emusic (decent) and 40 bucks for cable internet.. now if any of the others (that suck) could give me content that was comparable to what i already pay for cable (70 bucks) i wouldnt be cancelling this month! its ridiculous to me to pay this much money and still feel that i am getting nothing!
what great things broadband was supposed to bring us! LOL.. we'll keep dreaming i guess.

You get what you don't pay for...

I'd rather pay for quality, than get trash for free.
