Comments on news posted 2002-03-23 11:31:17: Those crazy kids at Bell Labs have done it again, this time pausing from their bar brawls long enough to proclaim they've set a new data delivery record. The lab boys have claimed that in a demonstration, they sent a massive 2. ..

Yippie....

Meanwhile, I sit here at my home computer and its lousy connection for a half hour while uploading a few family pictures for email to relatives.

Why don't those lab "boys" expend their energies into developing a practical and cheap way of making last mile connections that I (and the rest of the country) could actually benefit from - INCLUDING GETTING ME A BROADBAND CONNECTION!?!

You can shove huge amounts of data around the country until your nose drops off if that’s what you want, but it is almost entirely useless when people can't take advantage of tapping into it.

Sheesh....

i'd be happy to get what i pay for

i think this advancement is tremendous. it's truly a testament to current technology.

what i see happening, however, is this technology will just take a little longer to oversubscribe, but that's what will happen. there's simply not enough competition- and furthermore, as days progress, there's less and less incentive to compete.

incidentally, doesn't Seimens in Germany hold the data-delivery record?

WOW!

Pretty cool......

@pacbell.n

the trouble is..

What would you possibly do with that sort of speed? Download more movies, more music? The sad thing is the record companies, hollywood, etc will do everything in their powers from here on out to stop and control whats going on right now. It sickens me to think that technology is going to be held back by mankinds lowest common denominator, money.;(

Sending what though?

I want to know where they even found 2.56 terabits of data. It could of been the same 40gb cluster though..?

Sheesh....

Agreed. And with fewer competitors with each passing day, the telco's have little incentive to improve things -- they can simply sit back and feed from the revenue stream generated by existing technology...

 Show me the money!

Money is not the lowest common denominator, the people doing anything for money are.
Sure, probably none of us will have 2 Tbps at home in our lifetime. I'd be happy with 2 Mbps right now If that doubles every 5 years and if I live around 50 more years, lifetime means about 2 Gbps. Well, maybe our kids will...

The RIAA is sure as hell not going to keep bandwidth away from me.

We'll see it... believe me lol

Same thing applies to Bill Gates saying 64k of RAM (or whatever the number was) would be more than anyone ever needed.

I thought he said 640K of RAM. Maybe he said 64 but I thought it was a bit more than that.

640K

It was 640K. I had a 286 with 640K, and it did take quite a few years to become obsolete.

Because you don't pay the MILLIONS per unit they can make from the telcos.

Assuming you had unlimited cash, you could get some amazingly fast service. Probably not terabit quality, but lots of gigabits, if you wanted.

Unfortunately, it would mostly go to waste. Unless you were serving the universe streaming media, it would be hard to saturate that kind of connection. And even if you surfed for all the [insert what you surf for here] you could stand, it's doubtful any sites could fill a pipe that big anyway. Anything not filled is wasted, so you'd better have a pretty fast click finger or a loooong list of filez to download.

Aside form the momentary slowdowns and bottlenecks, I'm actually very happy with my residential broadband service. It's plenty fast for my needs, and most of my wants.

With enough money, you can get as much bandwidth as you need.

With enough money, you still can't keep Windows from crashing.

This is Bell Labs we're talking about here.

This technology will sit on the shelf for 15-20 years just like DSL did.

There's no such thing as innovation when dealing with anything with Bell in the name.
