| Play it again, Sam... I posted this in another thread last week, but think it's worth repeating. It seems that the ones in the music industry who complain the most are the most popular, and the richest. Most of them already have more money than they could spend in a lifetime.
Most importantly, though, they seem to have forgotten where their money came from. It was those of us who buy $15 CDs, attend their $150 p/seat concerts, and download some "freebies".
Hell, I can't afford to go out and pay $15 for every CD that may have one or two songs on it I enjoy so, yes, I do download some "freebies".
These idiots completely overlook the point that they're rich because of people like us. 95% of my music collection consists of legitimate CDs. But these "clowns" aren't satisfied with 95%; they want it all.
Now, when's the last time you heard of the members of Metallica, Celline Dion, or any other of these celebrities actually going out of their way to give anything back to the community? Sure, a stupid little "charitable" event to get more publicity for themselves, but when do they ever say "Thanks for making me a millionaire", and mean it? -- The glass is neither half-empty, nor is it half-full; it is merely twice the size required to contain the liquid elements therein.

You kinda have to wonder is Celien trying to boost sales of her god-awful music by putting the cd-protect on it so people will try to crack it OR is she so damn delusional that she think people would try to pirate her music.
I'm leaning towards the second

What makes the record companies think this WONT hurt them? What makes them think people won't be pissed off? Isn't it the goal of a business to make the customer happy, and to AT LEAST not piss them off? Where has pissing the customer off ever worked in the long run?

| There will always be a way...
First of all, the extraction software I use was designed with the paranoid audiophile in mind. It already includes an alternate method for obtaining a TOC and will ask the drive how to interpolate missing samples/C2 errors (rather than simply report that a read error occurred).
That's two protection schemes circumvented so far.
For any other methods I will just go out and buy an Extigy and an optical cable and plug it directly into the back of my CD jukebox. **Gives RIAA the finger...**

| CD player to PC recording via fiber connection I have an optical fiber input/output on my pc. All you have to do is record a cd from your stereo cd player (with optical out) onto your pc. Then convert the tracks into MP3/Wave or whatever your liking. It's not crystal clear cd quality, but it sound damn good. I tried it with my neighbor's Celine Dion cd and it work fine. You can also record through your RCA connections from your stereo cd player onto your PC, but the optical sounds better. | |

Now you will not find me making copies of cd's for sale.. or even for friends.. they are for my personal use. Hell I burn mp3 cdroms as I have a legal mp3 cdplayer.. and most stand alone dvd players(excluding sony) also play mp3 discs.
Also what the music industry wants for digital music is just stupid... lock that particular mp3file to my PC or mp3 player.. not to be played on anything else.. come on.
This sounds like ebooks.. the MS Reader can only be installed on 3 devices max.. and the book is locked to that particular key or whatever they are using.
Right now I can grab my CD's take them anywhere and play them.. if they have their way it will be like the Circuit City's DIVX dvd player.. where the disc would play for a day or two then die until you paid another fee to replay the disc ... and the disc was locked for that viewing on that particular dvd player.. do we wish the same for our audio cd's be it dvd-audio... mp3 or whatever the future holds. -- Join the DSL Reports SETI@Home Team!

Unfortunately you are making a very rash generalization regarding all that post here.
I burn CDs that are compilations of my existing collection. An activity that at this present time is still legal in the US. Frankly if this becomes impossible on a PC then perhaps I'll just support Philips and pick up a stereo component burner.
I don't subscribe to any of the P2P services myself -- but I am more likely to go over to the local used reseller than I am to goto the "new" retailer and see if perhaps someone has sold back a copy in good condition.
So, I would ask that you reconsider your future rants since I personally take offense to your stereotyping.

There are quite a number of folks who have MP3d their own collection to use on their own players, those who just want backups of their CDs for their car etc.
And, yes there are those who are file sharing.
However, your comments lead to indicate that you believe everyone posting here is stealing music, which is NOT the case, i.e. generalizing.
