 It's a Mad Mad World

"EverQuest" is one of the biggest financial success stories in the nascent world of online gaming, with more than 400,000 subscribers paying subscription fees...."

Now nobody go getting crazy, quitting their job and blowing off the fam in favor of a surreal, virtual reality only to whack himself like that 21 yr old epilepsy/emotionally distrubed patient did in Ohio(?) was it. Don't remember. Somebody help me out. That story was posted here last week.

Any reason you choose to use that term in your post?

Suicide is no joke

It's inappropriate to describe suicide as "life sucking".

Has nothing to do with the recent suicide.

The game IS life sucking.

Because that's how the article described the person in question. Ease up, man. If you become easily offended at terminology such as epilepsy or emotionally disturbed then don't read this forum. I am not going to sugarcoat my vocabulary to protect you from what you voluntarily choose to read online. That isn't my job.

No PS2 n00bs in Everquest, please

I hope the new PS2-bound network will be separate from the regular servers. The amount of arrogant 15 years old loot and stat w****s in the game is staggering as-is and is doing a lot to ruin the game for others, and I certainly hope this new game won't bring an influx of more of the same material into the regular game. It's supposed to be an RPG, but really is nothing more than a Diablo 2 style playground for these people.

Do you know how addictive this game is? My brother has a slow computer and crappy video card. And even though the choppy frame rates made him nauseous, he still kept playing. He told me that one time, it got so bad that he threw up. I asked him why he didn't just walk away from his PC and lie down. He said he just couldn't stop playing (had to get to the next character level).

Re: It's a Mad Mad World

The story can be found here.

Epilepsy really has nothing to do with the situation for the story. I have it. I play games. Am I an addict and suicidal? Nope. The guy was basically a social outcast. He lived on his own, was overweight and worked for a pizza place. He spent hours upon hours playing Everquest. His mom tried to help him but couldn't. His mom is trying to sue the company that makes Everquest because he was addicted. If she wins then I'm sure we'll see a lot more lawsuits pop up once this game goes on PS2. Heck I'm sure more will pop up when people get divorced because of this game. Anything to make an extra buck without having to work for it.

just say no

I love to play computer games, and I've had dozens of people trying to "convince" me to play that one. I've never tried it. They always seem to come off to me like crack head zombies though. (not to say that Everquest players are drug abusers) It just seems that they try waaaaaay to hard to get me to start playing. Like maybe they all work for Sony or something, or maybe get a kickback for new people.

"Just try it man, its free at first, its greeeeeeat...."

Now that I think about it, it seems more like a crack dealer than a crackhead. Or maybe an occultist.

(I am prepared to be flamed by the groups that I may have offended:crack users and sellers, members of cults and undead living zombies)

Good thing. You wouldn't wanna go offending anyone's ultrasensitive feelings by mentioning reality now, would you.

i remember when i started playing EQ, it was insanely addictive, and very very fun for quite a while. I mentioned it to a few of my cousins, and before long a good portion of em were all playing the game...

a few years later i have long since stopped playing the game, it was fun and great entertainment value for the price but thats all it was to me. One of my relatives however is a full fledged "undead living zombie" now, wish i had never mentioned the game to him, he has almost no life outside of the game, he must play 12 hours a day.

it really is a fun game, but i dont see how they can make it work for a PS2 without listing a keyboard as being required to play it... the chat functions in the game are at its very core, you have to talk several NPCs to get quests, and you certainly have to be able to communicate with other players you go out in hunting parties with etc...

Re: It's a Mad Mad World

Good posts on both the subject of the poor kid and for responding to the insecure PC crowd. Thank goodness, the story didn't also mention the kid was Islamic, (he wasn't) as well as being epileptic and emotionally disturbed. Not only would you have been been probably banned from DSLR for just being the mailman but protesters would have shown up at your house to yell at you for being a bigot and someone who preaches hate just for quoting the Islamic part. All of this because you just quoted a story. You've got to love it.

Protesters are fun to mess with, though! You can play golf on your lawn and if you hit one, "get offa muh property, ya dirty hippie!".

My entire reason for not playing is much simpler..

I don't play games that force me to pay additional fees just to play it. It's bad enough that I have to buy the damn game in the first place, but then they suck you dry in the following months. And for what? Crappy graphics, a community that has its HEAD tags nested within its BODY tags, good money down the drain, and an overall waste of time?

That's also why I'm anxious for Neverwinter Nights.

Re: It's a Mad Mad World

Kid was actually from Wisconsin, here's the news article as printed in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal.

If you think about this, the kid was probably being kept alive by Everquest. I don't think he killed himself just because of the game.

Get a grip people!

The person who killed himself was a 21 year old adult who was diagnosed by a licensed psychologist as suffering "depression and schizoid personality disorder, symptoms of which include a lack of desire for social relationships, little or no sex drive and limited range of emotions in a social settings." He also had epilepsy and suffered from seizures. (I assume he must have been taking several mind altering drugs for these conditions.)

The reason he committed suicide is obvious. It was because of his addiction and involvement in playing his computer game. What else could it be? Right?

I am not attempting to mock anyone or minimize the value of life or the death of anyone. But come on people. Get a grip on reality. Please.

This makes me pissed off to the 3rd degree

quote:
Elizabeth Woolley, who says her son, Shawn, was addicted to EverQuest, wants to sue the makers.

Instead of blaming the makers of a video game for this, perhaps she needs to investigate where she failed as a mother.

So beware to anyone who wants to create a harmless video game. A mother of an emotionally disturbed teen may try to sue you.

(Added Later)

By the way, I don't own the game and I have never played it, so no I don't have a bias for the game.
