I dont know if they are still doing it, but aol blocked all ports of non-aol programs. Such as icq, Internet explorer, and yahoo chat. When i called aol about this, the person cliamed they do not block ports, but i could not tracert or ping past thier proxy server. So, I disconnected aol and will never go back. I dont need and ISP telling me which programs i can and can not run. |

| I Never Could Understand AOL
AOL never had much to offer anyone in my opinion. Maybe many years ago pre internet it gave road warriors a way of getting their email almost anywhere in the world.
The only record breaking thing AOL ever did was make about a zillion cd's which must have cost them a fortune. I read somewhere that they spend about 6 months customer revenue getting each customer, which means that if you dumped them after 4 or 5 months they would loose money.
They ignored broadband for years thinking that their customers, who were supposedly happy with their crippled internet, would not notice that dial up is terrible.
I am sure as people get more web savvy and broadband becomes more available the AOL part of the company is going to become a smaller and smaller. |

It had to be your computer. I'm no AOL fan, but I was able to do all of those things. People blame the ISP because they refuse to believe there could be a possibility they don't know what they are doing. |

I. C. Well if I knew who posted that crack I might be able to excuse it out of knowledge of the person. But since I don't I would say its a little over the top. AOL has been stupid for years, but they had stupid people back then. Its the people who have changed more than the company.
I mean, from the first day YOU left AOL, didn't you know their offering was pretty shallow and their clock was ticking??? [text was edited by author 2002-04-17 10:41:51] |

Huh?
Like it or not AOL brought the Internet to the masses. They helped shape the so-called new economy.
You think broadband is easy? That AOL is the only provider that rolled-out a half baked product with shoddy service?
AOL isn't for everyone. But for Jon and Jane Doe who just want something quick and easy, it's perfect. |

ROFL!...yeah, I remember getting them in a box of Lucky Charms.
AOL is for newbies or the non techno-file. Once a newbie becomes somewhat technically savvy, they dump AOL for bigger & better things. AOL has become a stagnent, un-idividualized service.

It was not the machine. I made straight A's in my microsoft classes and passed my cisco class with a C. Since I work for an ISP I have to troubleshoot WAN LAN connections all day long. |

| Really? I'm not trying to make you look dumb or anything, but AOL uses Internet explorer as it's browser, and ICQ is OWNED by AOL.
What you can do in a microsoft or cisco course really doesn't impress anyone here, especially when you're using AOL.
Yeah, they suck, but they're not blocking their own products. |

Call me sick, call me angry, call me what you will. I just love reading about AOL having problems. I unfortunately have AOL(only choice for dsl other than directly from verizon and will be going to OOL as soon as available) and simply hate it.
One thing that does disturb me though is that people always question someones tech knowledge simply because they are on AOL. Its tech discrimination if you ask me. Please, its bad enough that some of us really have no other choice, we really dont need to hear how "stupid" we are for having AOL. If you dont know why we have it then dont put us down. -- AOL DSL SUCKS |

How can you say they ignored broadband?? They bought the 2nd largest cable company. What else can they do but that. They probably have the 2nd most broadband customers(Time Warner Cable customers) of any company in America. AOL is a dial-up with nationwide availabilty(as it is relatively easy to do that). There is no way to provide broadband access nationwide profitably in the current state of the telecom and cable industries. The only way this could be done is by running on the back of a DSL and cable company which is not profitable. No company can own nationwide broadband infrastructure in todays climate. Yes AOL will lose all of their customers outside Time Warner cities in the long-run, however there wasn't really anything they could've done about it. |

Ok, if you chose AOL for broad band because it is the only choice then we will feel your pain. If you have other options and you still choose AOL then the members if DSLR will tar and feather you -- "Death is irrelevant" |

| trust me i cant wait to leave aol. and i know a cple of ppl on dslr that have no choice either. just bothers me to read people putting down other people becuase they are on aol. i mean lets face it for your average person aol is nice and easy. i already bought my motorola surfboard sb4100 and have it all set up to cable. Just waiting for OOL to finally wire my neighborhood so it can sync. It sucks just watching it blink and blink and blink -- AOL DSL SUCKS |

i hate to break it to ya honey, but microsoft classes mean dick in the real world for the most part. what cisco class did you take and why did you only get a C? i know more idiots with MCSE's than i'd like to think about. sad part is they're getting paid 3x what the people who really do the work get paid (many of whom either don't have a computer degree or dropped out).
not to mention the fact that anyone with any real technical knowledge wouldn't touch an AOL connection with a 10 ft pole, much less sign up for one. |

sure they merged with the 2nd largest cable company . . . 2 yrs after other ISPs began offering broadband to their customers. i'd say they did some ignoring. |

anyone with any technical knowledge would know that AOL isn't their only choice. there are a TON of ISPs out there, and many with more rural access than AOL if that's the issue. AOL is not really an ISP, they provide software which is an interface to a connection they don't provide, but pay someone else to. if your only broadband choice is AOL cable, you're actually wrong . . . since earthlink was in business w/ time warner before the time warner/aol merge, they have a "right of first refusal" when time warner rolls out service somewhere (meaning earthlink gets first bid on it over aol). they snatch it up. *then* aol can roll out service in the same area. so, everywhere aol/time warner cable internet is, there's earthlink, just a step ahead. |

| i dont have aol cable, i have aol dsl(as it clearly says in my post). when i say i have no other choice its because verizon is the actual dsl carrier in my area and verizon itself sucks. i started with aol many years ago (like almost everyone i know) and havent switched since OOL was supposed to be in my neighborhood over a year ago. i see no reason to get another isp in the meantime since ill only have to cancel them as well. your talking about time/warner which is not my cable provider(thank god cablevision is, cple blocks away ppl dont have OOL as a choice only roadrunner).
but this is exactly what i mean, why start out with "anyone with any technical knowledge would know that AOL isn't their only choice" dont you think i have investigated this? anyone with any tech knowledge would know that if OOL services my neighborhood than obviously time warner cant. -- AOL DSL SUCKS
