| There is no argument against the RIAA Simple put the RIAA has every right to action against anyone who is stealing there copyrighted material. I don't care if a CD is $18.00 and only costs a penny to manufacture and produce, it is theft when you swap files via the internet. Now prior to MP3 & broadband there was really no viable means of copying and distributing music other than cruising over to a buddies house and copying it there on the old stereo system. I highly doubt the RIAA even cared or noticed this activity.
Now you have mass distribution of copyrighted material worldwide and it's damn easy to get this stuff. I can assure that the music companies have felt this in the massive pockets with which they hold and they want to contain it as best they can. As would I.
I do know that if I were to produce something and people liked it that they would pay for it, not steal it.
This argument I just made is just common sense. I don't always abide by the rules, but just wanted to point the RIAA's perspective here.
Take care,

| Let's bypass the record companies altogether I hate the RIAA and the tactics they use. I'd rather support the artists directly. I think it'd be much better to buy a CD from a band directly, and let them actually make some money off of it, rather than support the draconian record companies and the RIAA.
Anyone know of web sites where one can go and see newer bands/independent bands? I mean, I like the idea of them not being RIAA slaves and all, but if they don't get any publicity, how can we hear of them and check them out?
Since I don't have VH1/music video on my cable, how will I find out about these guys? It's not exactly practical for me to surf the Net and stumble upon their websites after all.

| How much is a CD really worth? Some friends and I were discussing this the other day....
Everyone complains about the high price of CD's and other forms of media. I was wondering what would be the "magic" price at which most of the MP3 swapping and copying stops in favor of people just paying for music.
I don't make much money and I can't afford as much music as I would like to purchase.....I think about $10 for a CD would be fair....

Well, a cd actually is cheaper to produce than cassette tapes were. Much cheaper.....so..... if a cassette sold for $9 then a CD should NEVER sell for more than $9. Maybe even $7- $8. The main group stealing here is the RIAA... they are stealing our hard earned money for crappy music that's only worth HALF the price! Music is an artform people.... and it's the RIAA's job to keep it from those who aren't rich. Well, now those who aren't rich found a way to get their ART back. Die RIAA scum! -- "Its so easy no wonder its number 1!"... Stupidity for the masses. Troubleshooting Question #1: "Are you using AOL?"

| A legitimate answer, a CD is worth as much as the market will bear. In other words, a CD is worth as much as people are willing to pay. If people continue to buy cd's at current prices the price will remain constant or go up. If not, the prices will drop. Capitalism at work. | |

| Sucking more than Moose Balls... I agree with the points here, and would like to add a couple others... Since $$$ is ALWAYS the motivator with the RIAA, what they fail to realize is that it is above all else - their ATTITUDE of arrogance and political correctness that gets me. I can hear them now... "How dare these miscreants STEAL from US!" If they really want a proven way to make money, I refer them to the one and only - Microsoft. Why?
Anyone remember how Microsoft got such widespread usage? Yep - by pirated copies of DOS and Windows, not to mention Office... Look at Bill Gates now! Holy cow! If the RIAA stopped FEARING the future and became a part of it, they might just change their minds and thank P2P.
The point the RIAA should make is that an MP3 is a great 'teaser', as the sound quality is less than a normal CD, unless you have some ungodly sized 320-bit MP3. If we, as users can accept a less than ideal (MP3) copy of the real deal, then who are we to complain? The point of QUALITY comes to mind - get what ya pay for - right?
I think instead of shoving an entire CD down our throats, they should sell fully legitimate songs online for $1.00/each. Then they could give the artists, who really need that extra million ANYWAY... a percentage of those royalties.
Look, I went to high school in Seattle with Stoney Gossard (Pearl Jam fame). Loved those lunchtime jams... The whole point of being an artist is expression, and recognition of your talents, with money as a bonus. If you have the talent, you will be rich.
Why does the RIAA have to bee so greedy? Just think of where they are based - California. Spoiled rotten by their age old ways, who would want to change? Instead, the RIAA plants viruses on our computers via P2P, and harassed (potentially) by our ISP's? Conceited, spoiled, and don't want to WORK for their money, only to take it from you then claim it is YOUR fault they can't buy that new Mercedes for their daughter. Wait - isn't that what is happening in the telco industry? OMG - I am on the wrong thread...
