Microsoft learns how the game is played...

I think you'll see a lot more of M$ flexing their muscle in the lobbyist/insider scene. They've now learned how the system works for big $$$ and how to get what you want while preserving a thin veneer of legitimacy.

Our tax system is such a joke. I'll bet 99.9% of the people reading this paid more (as a % of income) in taxes last year then Mr. Gates.

Ah, well. I really don't mind if Mr. Gates wants to buy up other company stock, but when it's done in dark backrooms with an eye to buying up politicians and legislative agendas, well, that's where I get pissed. We have precious little representation of the "regular joe" in Washington D.C. as it is. Now M$ is coming onto the scene.

 MaxiSquash

What Bill Gates needs to do is change the name of his company to MaxiSquash because that is what he has done to everybody else. Once IBM selected the PC platform that they were going to use Bill Gates was GUARANTEED to become the richest man in the world.

Too bad that the government failed to break up IBM. Bill Gates would still be a small player if not for the mentality that IBM is the only company that makes computers and Allen-Bradley is the only company that makes motor controllers.

As a side note, IBM, MaxiSquash, and Allen-Bradley do make good stuff, but I have had too many problems with Allen-Bradley creating Spare Parts Conspiracy problems and not wanting to fix servo computers.

Re: Microsoft learns how the game is played...

Do you personally care how much your neighbor or co-worker makes? If I did I'd be leading a half of a life full of disappointment. I sure as hell could care less and have never had a stomach ulcer as a result. Are you Mr. Gates's personal accountant? Why not be concerned with the high rate of taxation on all Americans in every way possible, not just you or Bill?

As for this fund, you'd no doubt be telling Gates that he's too greedy if he didn't give the money away anyway. So what's he supposed to do? Give it to you by certified funds?

Also as a fellow American entrusted with the right to vote, you'll want to make sure you actually read up on candidates and who they choose to accept money from before pulling the lever. The FEC releases campaign contribution numbers. Use this accordingly. There are numerous websites that list who gives what to whom. The govt sure as hell better stay out of who I can give to and how much. That's why we have that pesky 1st amendment.

BTW, I run Linux and MacOS. So don't tell me there's no choice out there other than MS. This monopoly double speak business is a joke. This thread has now been assigned grenade status.

I suggest you take your own advice and read up on who you've been voting for, as your other "posts" make that quite clear, and, obviously, you don't pay attention to anything you don't want to hear...

It now appears you're joining threads just to start a flame war or troll for a knee-jerk response. I'm guessing you're not leading a half of a life of disappointment, it must be up near the full level.

Well I usually make it a point to know the interests of the people I vote for, yes. That's called knowledge.

Again, no points addressed.

MS-Not my woe

How much does this really matter? It doesn't. Where does this involve you? Nowhere.

Just because he has money doesn't mean that you should target him as an evil man.

Microsoft does do things like hiring out to little companies, and I HATE it. It took six weeks for my copy of WinXP pro to come through that promo company. They didn't even have an order tracker or anyone who would respond to emails.

Microsoft has innovated much of the computer industry. There are plenty of options to choose from, and I use several Windows alternatives. I'm not a Windows basher because I have to pay 1/8 (or less) of the price for a new computer as the OS. It's a great product. If you don't like Microsoft or Gates or whoever, get Linux, but don't keep bashing Microsoft.

When you install an Apple product like Quicktime, it almost takes over your machine. It added shortcuts in a dozen places. It took over Windows Media Player and Winamp when I never selected it to become a default player. If MS does ANYTHING remotely like this, you blame Gates and your cute "M$" figure.

Grow up. Stop bashing rich people because they have more money/status than you. Stop bashing rich entities because everyone else does and it makes you feel a little more powerful and confident, along with the rest of the group.

Most of us have Devilsown Corporate copies of WinXP pro, even with the cracked pre-release of SP1. Let's not be hypocrates.

Re: MS-Not my woe

questionable corporate ethics and unchecked greed got the economy into a a bubble then a hangover that is not yet finished.

Your attitude is clearly hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.. it must be nice to plunk your head in the sand, but just because it is "not your woe", I bet, however, when someone finally does screw you over in business, and it is "your woe", you will be crying foul.

Corporations need to do, and be seen to do, the right thing .. and will continue to be questioned where there is cause for suspicion. thats that.

Bill Gates is a prick

A very successful one, and the richest man on earth because he saw opportunity and exploited it. His success is wildly disproportional to his contributions to technology, and stem from three things, superb marketing, intellectual property rights laws he helped create, and IBM's failure to adequately patent the PC.

DOS, the software that made Gates billions, was written in a few weeks by one man. Gates bought it for $50,000 and a million dollar bonus if it was successful. He refused to pay although he made Billions from DOS, and the owner had to sue. Microsofts best ideas were pirated, including windows and the strategy for Microsoft's monopoly.

Gates has an ulterior motive for everything, including his "charities". By law, such foundations have to spend a % of their assets each year to retain tax exempt status, so they have to distribute grants to one cause or another. Gates isn't in the same league as the great American philanthropists, although he has amassed a larger fortune. His philanthropy, like his software and MSN, is second class.

If the American public wasn't so lazy, stupid, apathetic and cowardly, Gates wouldn't be as wealthy, and the RIAA/MPAA and BSA wouldn't be using the FBI as keystone cops to raid our universities and arrest students for file sharing.

There is no question Gates is a genius, or that he worked for his money and is entitled to great wealth. And he isn't a crook like so many CEO's in the news lately. But he isn't a hero either, or much of a philanthropist, just a very rich man with no class.

just playing along.

Microsft isn't doing anything that other companies aren't doing. Does this make it right? no but the point is they aren't doing anything new.

And if he wanted to he wouldn't have to give a single penny to any charity. I've read where he has given hundreds of millions to certain charities (equipping schools with computers was the last one I heard about). Does he have to do this? NO.. its his money if he wants to keep it all and pay hella taxes on it he could. So he's not as evil as you make him out to be.
