Comments on news posted 2002-09-11 09:22:35: In an ironic twist, apparently somebody hopes to make an illegal profit reselling peer to peer software available elsewhere for free. The folks at Kazaagold are offering what looks to be KaZaaLite 1.7.1 as a new, and innovative product. For $6. ..

duplicate?

i thought i posted something similar to this, albeit not to the news, a few weeks ago, but nonetheless the more that are informed the better

»beware of 'kazaa gold'!

edit: i just read the title to the story... "...among thieves"? please. you're bringing down the otherwise good journalism with bias.

Not New...

When I was searching out kazza a few months ago I came across several places trying to sell it. Pretty foolish. Everyone knows it's free. That's the whole idea...

No need to buy it

You can just download it from kazaa.

Or, 1 person buy it

Then distribute it via P2P.

piece of junk (insert expeletive here) software

When I found out over the weekend that some lovely little gobbledy gook programs were installing themselves via Kazaa I promptly deleted the software and spent a good half day eliminating stuff like, nxysumba.exe, among plenty other cryptic files.. Now, I'm not going to say it's not partially my responsibility, I did agree to download and install the software, it's just that I can not justify at this time paying for another product that could open a door for pesky little problems into my system and cause havoc. FYI, even with a software firewall and a virus scanner it still couldn't prevent this crap from getting in. by the by, for those who care, the name of the nasties was W32.LITMUS, trojan. It's especially pesky for WIN ME and WIN XP as it and I'm sure plenty other trojans can reside in the system restore files. Turning off System Restore before eradicating the problem helped!

It's a shame that they'll be getting a good bit of money off of this though, from the unwitting public. Sometimes an uninformed customer can be good for business...

Re: duplicate?

That was a good "heads-up", k4dwi. I think there is a niche for such a service, though, if it is run "legitimately". I can see a company starting up in a country that's immune to U.S. copyright law, then charging for P2p services that include filtering for viruses. No doubt, the RIAA is behind the virus infestations at Kazaa, which will prompt someone to start a service such as this. Too bad. If they, (the RIAA), would just provide a service with reasonable prices, etc., they could be benefitting from all of this, rather than tightening the noose around their own neck...

Just WinMX it!

Then all your problems are solved....Why download a tainted product then have to manually clean out the spy ware when you can download another app that is just as good or better, without spyware, none, ziltch, zero...

Most good businesses realize it's in their best interest to sell software via download for cheaper than shipping you a CD, box, and instructions.

 Kaaazaaap!

Wow, just what the RIAA needs.... a company they can pin their lawsuit on!
Can't sue Kazaa because there is no central server... but perhaps the company SELLING the software??!!??
I mean, with profit must come some responsibility.

Haha...

I....*acquired* a password to download this when I first ran across it, just out of curiosity to see what it was. I shoulda reported it, but I didn't think much of it at the time...it IS KaZaaLite, nothing more. The virus removal is nothing more than PC-cillin, if my memory serves me correctly, and the like.

They've changed the purchase now...before you just submitted the information (or in my case, bypassed that portion), and it took you to a download link..now they have it to where they want to 'process' your order and then send you the information in email, which defeats my method of 'entry'.

Bottom line, it's a fraud...and I'm shocked that CNet Downloads has them as a sponsored link. That tells me people are actually buying this.
