Yes... it is mostly private homes near there, but I believe they are student-occupied. And yes the CO is still across the street, although its Verizon now. -- DRM == Doesn't Read MP3s

No I'm not, and based on my last read of the TOS, it is against their policy to allow for an open hotspot. However, they are encouraging people to share the connection amongst their own computers within their house using wireless networking. -- DRM == Doesn't Read MP3s

| I would share my wi-fi...but...
...I'm having a problem with the distance my router will put out - I can only move about 12 feet away from the thing and I lose the connection. I have a netgear MR314 router, and a Linksys pcmcia card. Does anyone have any ideas, or is there a good troubleshooting website out there? I don't have any 2.4MHz interference (Like cordless phones, etc) and have placed the router all over my desk, away from other objects, nothing seems to work. Thanks for any help!

From what I have read in other posts, pcmcia cards are well known for very short range. May want to experiment with a USB instead of pcmcia.

I can get a usable signal at 900 feet away from my own D-Link 900-AP access point using a Linksys PC Card, provided I have an unobstructed line of site to the WAP. With a Pocket PC (Symbol), I was able to go even further away with obstructions. The only major impediments for me appeared to be live trees and bushes and metal studs in walls. -- DRM == Doesn't Read MP3s [text was edited by author 2002-11-19 20:58:12]

We opened up an Intermec Wireless Access Point at work... and found exactly the same thing, a PC Card Wireless Card. -- DRM == Doesn't Read MP3s

·Speakeasy
| Re: Haven't heard anything from SBC I switched to Speakeasy recently because their ToS states that, as long as you are not impairing their network with heavy load, "they're your bits, do what you want with them" (paraphrased from memory). Not only did I switch, but I bumped up my service, from 768/128 to 1.5/384, because my immediate neighbors are tapping in and chip in to offset the cost. It's a great deal for them, because they gain access to a fast connection without the huge expense. It's a great deal for me, because I get a better connection and still get to (sometimes) offset my cost. It's a great deal for Speakeasy because they have a higher-margin customer with a "deluxe" subscription.
The only thing that worries me is the liability. For that reason I made my neighbors sign a note that says, simply, they are not required to contribute anything in return for the service, and as such, I hold no liability if they lose that access, or are hurt by that access (eg. hacked), whether intentional or not.
I don't run an open network though. It's as secure as existing WLAN equipment can make it. So someone with AirSnort and spoofing experience could hack my network but the casual neighbor with typical (eg. no) computer knowledge isn't getting a free ride.

Excellent. Keep the attitude, listen to the people and you'll surely gain a few customers in this densely populated area of NYC.
A word or two to that effect (indirectly or directly addressing wifi/hotspots) on DSLi.com would go a long way for potential shoppers. News around here spreads quickly.
Elias may I also suggest if you're sincere about your commitment to wireless maybe a word or two in the NYC Wireless.NET Mailing lists or in chat would gain some prospects.

| Re: Why care?Right on the mark!
Smart ISP's don't care, matter of fact, they encourage it. The ones who are whining, are the ones who were stupid enough to offer *unlimited* for $59.95. There is no way to pay for the bandwidth at those prices.
While a T1 only runs at about 1.5 megabits, $1000.00 a month is right on the mark.
I think that is the only way Wi-Fi is gonna fly. What cracks me up, is that there are... er... uh... I mean were so many ISP's offering cheap unlimited bandwidth without a thought about who is gonna pay for it. It is equally funny how many people think that wireless will be free. Somebody has got to pay for it.
A good ISP would be happy to have you as a client because it appears that you have a clue what's going on.

| my two cents
Long Live Open Source,
I dont think they should have a problem with this because this is basically what cable companies do already....They are just shooting you bandwidth over the cable and you are sending it over the air with wi-fi. Where some of the companies are having the problem is the have some hot spots sucking Mucho bandwidth and taking away from others. Satelite providers have a Fair use limit where they cut you back when you hit a certain amount in a time period. I had this happen to me a few times and it sucks! I hope that doesnt catch on with some of the other providers. For the most part I dont think this movement, while a good idea, will make it to be much more than surfing a little over dailup speed because of what will be pending limitations by ISPs and hardware limitations of some of the routers.
The other major problem will be the one bad apple syndrone.......Which will basically be one moron start pumping spam through the host, which will look like its coming from the poor guy that is giving service to everyone. Thus he will most likely get disconnected for spamming because even though it come from the network it will be marked with his IP which the owner is responsible.
Just a few thoughts on the subject.....I wish we lived in the perfect world where this would work but we DO NOT. [text was edited by author 2002-12-01 00:29:18]
