Comments on news posted 2002-12-10 10:46:26: Most major cable companies have announced rate hikes over the past several months, and with ninety-five percent of Americans having access to only one cable provider, there's very little consumers can do about it. ..

Thank You Cable Companies!

I just wanted to thank cable companies for raising rates! I've seen quite a boost in business since Cablevision announced their rate hikes last week. And for those who couldn't guess I sell Sat. TV.

A different view here

This posting was from yesterday - »Telecom Sector Beyond Repair?
You will see lots of people debating that it is ok/not ok because the tele-coms are falling on hard times.
Read for yourself and you decide.

bah humbug

what can be said here? we are getting screwed and the only choice is to switch to satellite or have nothing. satellite isn't a viable option in the city because if you live on a lower floor they put the dish on the roof making it susceptible to theft.
we were let down by the government with de regulation. BOTH parties are equally at fault. people should refuse to pay the increases. that would be interesting but impossible to organize. Americans are to apathetic. it is a different time.

They changed their rates in early 2002 by $10 on some of their packages so with that rate it was only a $5 difference between the 768/128 package and 1.544/128 package so that aint that bad .

To those in the 5% category

For those few that live in an area with competition, let the rest of us know what it's like. Can you switch cable companies easy if you're not satisfied with the service that's offered?

What's the bitch?

Don't like it, get satellite.

It's not rocket science.

So unless you stop hitting yourself in the head with a hammer you will continue to hit yourself in the head with a hammer.

Well.....DUH!!!

The wonderful world of competition.

Huh? In the ghetto maybe, but not everywhere in the city. Besides, the dish is the cheapest part of your system and is pretty useless without an IRD.

Cable in my area is a high-priced joke, so I got DirecTV. You can't beat it for the price.

There's also building codes....I don't remember the details but in Queens I was prevented from installing a dish....something to do with the number of floors your building has....

And they are stolen everywhere...not just in the Ghetto...I lived in Astoria (which I notice you do now) for six years and I think my neighbor had his stolen three times....

I switched from comcast to Wide Open West (WOW) this past summer. I had no problems switching, WOW came out and installed within a few days, and I've had no trouble since. Of course mailings from comcast have increased, but I'd expect that. They (comcast) tried to bill me for an extra month, but beyond that, the switch went without incident.

Bye bye Cable

Cox in our area kept upping the rates, and promising to get somewhere with the Digital upgrade, and internet rollout...I called about twice a year, and finally got sick of being told to expect it in April(April? What year?) so now we have Direct TV and Verizon DSL. I think all told we are saving about 20 or 30 a month

Digital TV is the way to go!

I lived in an area served by RCN and MediaOne/ATT/Comcast. When I got fed up with MediaOne, I switched to RCN. When I got fed up with RCN, I switched to AT&T. Over the course of 3 years, I kept up with the intro offers. Yeah. Competition can help.

Of course, now I live in a new area, where AT&T the only provider. Fortunately, I've got a Digital TV tuner and a cheesey indoor UHF antenna that lets me get ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, UPN, WB, and PBS with much better picture and sound than cable (even for non-high definition broadcasts) FOR FREE!! I really don't miss cable at all....

The higher the prices for broadband in your area, the more companies you'll find making an effort to provide service. Well, at least in theory.

Yeah, it stinks

AT&T here in CT has continually raised rates and provided zero additional for it. Promised upgrades, more channels, even internet service have fallen by the wayside. Luckily DSL has been available to me for over 1 1/2 yrs now. I'd be retired before the cable co gets their act together.

Expanded basic (not even digital) will now be close to $50 after taxes and fees. Choices? Other than satellite or rabbit ears, none.

I'm sure once Comcast fully takes over, the rates will go up some more. Satellite is looking better and better...

Re: Digital TV is the way to go!

What kind of experiences have you guys had with the 2 big problems with satellite: 1) high latency, 2) useage caps, especially during peak hours.

If you just watch TV/movies, it shouldn't be an issue, but if you use the Net heavily, or do online gaming, it can be a problem I hear.

Re: What's the bitch?

Which is exactly what I did about 3 years ago. Time Warner is the only cable co. in the area, and rates kept climbing. I just tired of being screwed, so I've been a DirecTV customer since.....

Re: A different view here

Lets see, analysts say the telco side will remain depressed due to "too much competition".
On the other hand, analysts say the customers are getting gouged when there is no competition in the cable sector.

Given the current economy and the present administration.....which side do you think will win?
Competition and consumers?
Or monopolies and business?

Re: What's the bitch?

The bitch is that I can't watch my local sports teams play without Comcast cable. Can't do it with satellite. Feels like Comcast is the one hitting me with a hammer.
