Comments on news posted 2002-12-31 12:02:27: The Thing is a small, politically active New York City DSL and dial-up provider that started as a BBS back in 1991, but only recently bore witness to the brave new world of ISP liability. ..

| what a ripoff Look at the prices that The Thing charges -
50 megs storage, 1 gig transfer, 3 emails -
35.00 per month? I wouldn't pay more than $5.00 / month for that kind of account. You could pay much less than that, even if you shared an low-cost hosting account with 3 or 4 other people, it would probably run you just a couple bucks a month.
There are so many better deals out there than that. At least $30 of that $35 a month would be much better off being donated to Greenpeace or some other charity. That's almost 400 dollars a year.

@adelphia.net | DOW Considering our government is controlled by big business, it's no wonder why our freedom of speech is being crushed.

| Error: * please provide catchy title Hrm. There's a lot of misguided people, saying misguided things about MOST of this stuff.
First off, I can't pull up the mirror of the site, so I can't say what it looked like. BUT! If it looked like Dow, used their name and their COPYRIGHTED trademarks without acknowledging that Dow owned them, and defaced Dow WITHOUT HAVING A PARODY DISCLAIMER, then they had about 2 seconds in any court in the nation, DMCA or no DMCA.
I don't agree with the DMCA, but that has NO bearing on this. It's simple public defamation and copyright infringement. That's IT.
Now....some people don't know how the Constitution was written. It started out as just having the Articles, which specified what powers each branch had, and there was one LITTLE TINY clause that said that the nat'l government had overriding authority over state gov's. That's all fine and dandy, except that the state gov's each had a Bill Of Rights which protected each person's basic civil liberties. The Constitutional Bill Of Rights was appended in the form of those lovely 10 Amendments which people love to hold above their heads and scream "FREE SPEECH!!!" without even knowing WHY those are there. They're there as a duplicate of your state's Bill Of Rights, appended so that the states would actually RATIFY the Constitution.
*end rant about people's miseducation of Constitution*
Free speech is protected to a point. There are clauses that say that, if you're publicly defaming someone's name without acknowleding that person, you can get in majorly deep crap for it. Sorry, but you can't slam a person and defame them and then say "oh....look I have free speech..." (anyone read "Disclosure" by Michael Crichton?)
Don't like it here? Either shut up and deal with it, or move to CANADA or something. There are plenty of other countries that you could find problems with too. Go bitch to someone who cares, because we (most of us) don't care. Or we could stick you on a little island in the Pacific, where you can have all the civil liberties you want. But no one else will be joining you anytime soon.
*end general rant about stupid people posting stupid ideas*
I think that Verio was a bit heavy-handed in the whole thing, but if you're tired of putting up with someone who keeps violating a TOS, then cut them off at the knees.

@rr.com
| Use your skills to teach Verio a lesson Anyone who believes that Dow is a bully and Verio is a crappy ISP (as I do) should take action. Like geminidomino sez in his post above "If you'll excuse me, I need to go to blocklists.us and add verio to my border router..." well, please excuse me while I fire up my Unix box and focus it on both of their website's and networks. Let's see how they like being "shut down"... now is the time for action...if not the Gov and BigBiz will take the last 10% of your "freedom" that remains.
Also...use every email account at your disposal and contact the following showing your disapproval: mpeloquin@verio.net, melissat@text100.com, davidm@text100.com (public relations dweebs) and abuse@verio.com, support@verio.com, dlthompson@verio.com (the addresses Dow used to bully Verio).
Fight now or loose your right to do so!!!!!
